MINISTER ONG YE KUNG: “WITHOUT P2HA, THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE COVID DEATHS”

Health Minister Mr Ong Ye Kung has said on Thursday (19 Aug) that the government’s decision to go back to Phase Two Heightened Alert (P2HA) on 22 July has in fact saved many lives.

He also said that if we did not go back to P2HA when the Jurong Fishery Port cluster came out, the death toll would have been much more.

He has acknowledged public sentiments and fears about the recent amount of deaths due to Covid-19 complications.

There has been nine out of 46 Covid-19 deaths in Singapore in August alone.

Minister Ong also mentioned that the death toll was what the task force was concerned about when the Jurong Fishery Port cluster broke out, especially when many unvaccinated seniors are amongst those numbers.

He added that even though those that has unfortunately passed on due to the complications carried highly transmissible Delta variants, the number of patients in ICU has been declining steadily.

There were 19 such admissions in the past three weeks, and Minister Ong hopes this number will remain low as more people receive their vaccinations.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) has also showed evidence that vaccination significantly reduces the need for intensive care or oxygen.

Nine percent non-vaccinated personnel who are infected required intensive care and oxygen and one percent of them passed on compared to 1.3 percent of vaccinated personnel required intensive care and oxygen and 0.1 of them passed on.

MOH also added that since the P2HA came into force in July 22, the number of cases has steadily declined which allowed the Government to finally ease more rules on August 10.

As of Tuesday (17 August), the case count has halved to about 63 a day compared to 123 weeks ago and isolated numbers have remained stable at half of the total cases detected.

Unliked cases have also remained stable at a quarter of the total reported cases.

NETIZEN: “FAMOUS BUBBLE TEA SHOP IS NOT ECO-FRIENDLY AND WASTE RESOURCES”

A netizen who wishes to remain anonymous has recently gave us her feedback on how environmental unfriendly a certain bubble tea chain is.

Here is her full story

“I love drinking bubble tea from “so and so” and I always find it a waste of resources and damaging to the earth every time they pour my order into a plastic cup.

Hence, I bought a reusable water tumbler from Shopee to play my part in being environmentally conscious.

However to my dismay, when I recently ordered from “so and so” and asked them to pour the drink into my water tumbler instead of a plastic cup, they rejected me and told me that they are unable to do so.

Mind you, I did not ask them to fill my tumbler to the brim but told them to prepare according to my order and then just transfer it into my tumbler.

I asked the staff behind the counter as to why they are unable to do so and explained my intentions of trying to save the earth by being eco-friendly but she just said that they do not do so and it is not within their standard operating procedures (SOP).

After she poured it into the plastic cup, I asked her if she could now help me to transfer the drink to my tumbler, she did not reject me and proceeded to do so.

To me it has became pointless as she has just wasted a plastic cup and it defeats the purpose of me being eco-friendly.

I have tried this with Starbucks before and they always allow me to do so and even offered a discount for bringing your own tumblr.

I am not asking for any discount by doing the same with “so and so”, so I really don’t get it as to why they are so inflexible.

I hope that they can review their SOP on this to be more environmental conscious.”

WOMAN HAPPY ABOUT COVID BECAUSE NO NEED “WASTE TIME” VISIT HER GRANDMA

A netizen took to Facebook to share how she is happy about the Covid restrictions, because she doesn’t need to “waste time” visiting her grandmother out of obligation.

She shared that she feels “a little guilty” but still resents her because her father is not her grandmother’s favourite son.

Here is the full story:

“My grandma is 85 years old. My grandpa has passed on a long time ago.

Unlike many other people with heartfelt stories about their grandma, my grandma is not close to me at all.

She has many grandchildren (more than 20). When i was a kid, my mom said she did not want to take care of me/my siblings but chose to take care of my other cousins. My mom had to quit her job and take care of us full time. Not sure why, but probably cause my dad was not the favourite son. It was pretty obvious that the other son was her favourite.

As i grew up, my grandma has never asked me about my school or grades or anything at all. Basically we never talked. Even when i visit her I don’t remember having any conversation with her. I would usually greet her and ask her how is she, but that’s it. She has been this way towards me and all my siblings. All these while, she took in some of my cousins and raised them (they stayed at her place on weekdays, and went back to their parent’s place on the weekends).

Writing up all the above, i feel sad. But that’s just how it is.

I got married last year, and although she was unwell, she attended my ROM. I have not seen her since then due to covid restrictions etc. To be honest, i was happy about the covid restrictions so I don’t need to waste time to visit her only just out of obligation, not even love.

My parents did visit her regularly and they mentioned she asked about me. She also gave her regards to me. This happened multiple times throughout the year. (It has never happened before).

Suddenly i feel a little guilty for not visiting her. Of course a small part of me wishes to have a loving grandma while growing up and all, but it’s too late for that. I still resent her for how she treated my family (she also did not treat my parents well).

Should i visit her (and it will just be awkward and silent) or should I just ignore this and move on with my life?”
