Overcrowding has left many Singapore residents, including foreigners have who stay here for many years unhappy.
To have public infrastructure that is overtaxed causes distress and pressure due to escalating competition for limited properties such as lodging and automobile on a tiny piece of land. Therefore foreigners are not the source of discontent.
This is not categorise as anti-foreigner anger but the root cause is that our overall population has expand quicker than the infrastructure growth needed to sustain the population. Even if the current population were all make up of Singaporean the outcome will be the same.
We should look up to the facts that during the 1970s, “Two is Enough” was an intervention campaign by the Government because Singapore’s wealth level could not support a large population. As this plans was done with practicality thus reducing the crowded buses of 1980s with more courteous travel. It seems that such crowding of the MRT and our roads nowadays could be seen in like bus stops and buses of the 80s.
Pounding up statements of xenophobia will only cause a disunited and conflicting home. What our leaders need to do is to recognise the root cause, just like how we developed from uneasiness of the ‘80s to move on from there. Improve our building infrastructure.
I live in this rented unit and I have informed the condo management roughly 1 hour after it happened (it happened around 1120 am today), but we couldn’t find out who did this. We found a Li-on battery on top of the panel, which we suspect has shattered the glass.
I guess my ass is covered by the clause in tenancy agreement where it states i only pay up to 100 dollars for major repairs. But i am really pissed by whoever did this and i suspect it is the same dude who has been throwing cigarette butts to the very same glass panel non-stop since i moved in. Soi really want to see him dealt with.
Anyone knows what I should do to help identify the offender or prevent it from happening again. NEA? Police? I felt the condo management hasn’t been very helpful coz they are just like “ok, i’ll let my boss know and tell the residents not to throw”. Thanks
The Housing and Development Board (HDB) has new caps on the subletting of flats to foreigners, but stopped short of extending the cap to the subletting of rooms, to minimise the impact on those who rely on doing so for additional income.
There were drew divided views from property experts and Members of Parliament (MPs) on whether the quota which takes immediate effect would be effective in addressing the HDB’s objectives of maintaining a “Singaporean character” in the heartlands.
Under the new rule, which is aimed at “(preventing) the formation of foreigner enclaves” within HDB estates, no more than 8 per cent of the units in a neighbourhood can be rented out to foreigners and permanent residents. For each HDB block, the cap is 11 per cent.
Malaysians, however, will be excluded from this cap as the HDB pointed out that they can “better integrate into our estates due to their cultural and historical similarities with Singaporeans”.
Subletting rooms to foreigners would still be permitted, to reduce the impact on people who rely on subletting for additional income, such as the elderly and low-income households, said the HDB.
Mr Colin Tan, the Director and Head of Research and Consultancy at Suntec Real Estate Consultants, however, felt this was an “escape” clause, and questioned the effectiveness of the cap in addressing concerns on foreigner enclaves at HDB estates
