A school in Chiang Mai has increased security measures after a student posted a threatening message in a group chat, prompting concerns among students, parents and teachers.

The message was posted in a Line group used by students on 10 August. According to local reports, the student threatened to harm classmates the following day and specifically mentioned students who were allegedly involved in bullying.

The screenshot was later circulated in a parents’ Line group, prompting the school to contact Mae Ping Police Station. Officers were subsequently sent to the school to assess the situation and ensure the safety of students and staff.

Police Question Student Over Threatening Message

Police identified and questioned the student who allegedly made the post. The student admitted sending the message but reportedly told officers that it had been made recklessly while following an online trend.

The student also claimed that they did not expect the message to be taken seriously or create such a major response.

Despite the explanation, authorities treated the message seriously because of the potential risk to students and staff.

The student’s parents were asked to meet officials on 11 August as police continued investigating what had prompted the message and the circumstances surrounding the alleged bullying.

Increased Security Around Chiang Mai School

Uniformed and plain-clothes officers were deployed in and around the school as a precaution.

Some students stayed home, while others were picked up early by their parents amid concerns over their safety.

Police across Chiang Mai were also instructed to increase security and surveillance around schools following the incident.

Authorities urged students and parents not to circulate unverified information, warning that rumours could create unnecessary panic and potentially encourage copycat behaviour.

Bullying Concerns Being Investigated

The alleged bullying claims are now among the circumstances being examined by authorities.

Police have not indicated that the student had actually carried out any attack, and the threatening message was dealt with before the proposed incident could take place.

The case comes at a time of heightened concern over school safety in Thailand following a separate violent incident at Debsirin Nonthaburi School.

That incident has increased public attention on the safety of students and the need for schools to respond quickly when threats or warning signs emerge.

The Chiang Mai case also highlights the potential consequences of threatening posts made online, even when the person making them later claims they were intended as a joke, trend or reckless act.

Authorities have stressed the importance of reporting concerning messages to schools or police rather than forwarding unverified claims through social media and messaging groups.
