CRANE FELL FROM CONSTRUCTION SITE ON 30TH FLOOR, KILLING 1 PERSON & INJURING 8

A huge crane from down from a construction site on the 30th storey of a high-rise building in Taichung, Taiwan, on Wednesday (10 May).

It then landed on a moving train below and resulting in 1 person being killed and 8 others being injured and conveyed to the hospital.

At the moment, it is unclear how or why the crane had collapsed, but construction works at the site have since been halted and investigations into the incident are ongoing.

The Central News Agency (CNA) reported that the tragic accident took place in the Nantun District in Taichung City, at the intersection of Wenxin South 5th Road and Wenxin Road.

According to Taipei Times, the crane had fallen from a height of more than 30 stories onto the moving train below, near the Feng Le Park Station.

The crane then crashed through the side of the moving train, shattering the glass windows and tearing apart the sheets of metal, as well as destroying the front of the train.

CCTV footage of the incident has also been shared online showing the crane falling down the building, as well as videos documenting the aftermath of the incident and the resultant wreckage caused.

Taiwan News reported that of the 8 injured people, 2 of them were primary school children who suffered cuts on their feet from the falling glass.

Another foreigner also suffered cuts to their head.

The person killed in the accident was revealed to be a 52-year-old female passenger inside the train at the time, who was trapped inside the train and under the carriage.

She was extracted from the rubble by rescuers but was discovered too late, she already had no signs of life and was also found to have suffered severe head trauma.

The Taichung Fire Brigade said that the deceased was flung out of the carriage in the accident.
