Thai Man Beats Friend To Death After Accusing Him Of Being Cannibalistic Ghost

Police in Khon Kaen province arrested a 59-year-old man following the fatal attack, which took place in a field hut in Nam Phong district on June 24.

The victim, a 57-year-old man, suffered severe injuries after being struck multiple times and later died in hospital.

Authorities said the suspect remained at the scene and was taken into custody without resistance when officers arrived.

Drinking Session Turns Deadly

According to investigators, the two men had spent much of the day drinking white liquor together at a hut located in an agricultural area.

As the day progressed, an argument reportedly broke out between the pair.

Police said the suspect began accusing his friend of being a Phi Pop, a supernatural entity widely known in parts of Thailand and Laos. In local folklore, the ghost is believed to possess individuals and feed on human organs, livestock and other living creatures.

During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly retrieved a hammer from inside the hut and launched a violent attack.

The victim was reportedly struck around 20 times on the head and body, leaving him critically injured.

Emergency responders rushed him to hospital for treatment, but he later succumbed to his injuries.

Hammer Seized As Evidence

Investigators recovered the suspected murder weapon along with other items from the scene for forensic examination.

Police have charged the suspect with assault causing death and are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Authorities are also looking into whether alcohol consumption may have played a role in the fatal confrontation.

The suspect remains in police custody while legal proceedings continue.

Folklore Belief Leads To Tragedy

The Phi Pop is one of Thailand’s most infamous supernatural legends and remains deeply rooted in some rural communities despite modernisation.

Stories about the spirit have circulated for generations, with believers claiming it can inhabit people and cause unexplained illnesses, deaths or strange behaviour.

While such beliefs remain part of local culture, police stressed that the case is being treated as a criminal matter involving a deadly assault.

The incident has shocked residents in the area, with many expressing disbelief that a long-time friendship could end in such a brutal manner following an argument fuelled by alcohol and superstition.

If convicted, the suspect could face a lengthy prison sentence under Thai law.
