A 35-year-old man was sentenced to 8 months of jail after stealing over $18,000 in cash from his former employer Ninja Van. He has also misappropriated phones which the customers wanted to trade-in and sold them online.
The man pleaded guilty in court today (19 Aug 2020) to one count of criminal breach of trust.
According to the court documents, the man was employed by Ninja Van in Apr 2018 and his job includes collecting cash payments after the delivery was made. When customers choose to trade in their mobile phone to offset payment, his job was to ensure that the phone is in good condition for trade-in. If the condition is not acceptable he will then collect cash from the customers.
The payments and phones collected were supposed to be handed over to the company within 24 hours.
His offences were discovered after the finance department noticed some discrepancies in his deliveries. His manager was informed and had arranged a meeting with him to go through the discrepancies. However, the man did not turn up for the meeting and even ignored his manager when his manager tried to call him.
The company managed to trace him down using a tracking device installed in the company’s van. He then admitted to his crime and said that the money was used to repay his debts owing to loansharks.
The man has since being dismissed by the company.
According to the law, the man could have been jailed for 15 years and fined for the offences he committed.
