Flight from Tokyo Diverted to Seattle After Passenger Attempts to Open Exit Doors

A recent incident involving an All Nippon Airways (ANA) flight from Tokyo to Houston has raised concerns about in-flight safety after a passenger attempted to open two exit doors mid-flight. The flight, designated as ANA Flight 114, was diverted to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Saturday, May 26, 2025, following the alarming behavior of the passenger.

Incident Details

  • Flight Path: The aircraft was en route from Haneda Airport in Tokyo to George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston when the incident occurred approximately 10 hours into the flight.
  • Passenger Behavior: According to the FBI and a spokesperson for the Port of Seattle, the crew and other passengers managed to restrain the individual who attempted to open the exit doors. Upon landing, the passenger was taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation.
  • Flight Status: The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner landed in Seattle around 4 a.m. local time. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the other passengers or crew members.

Additional Disturbances

Upon arrival in Seattle, another passenger exhibited unruly behavior while on the tarmac, expressing frustration over the diversion by punching a bathroom door. This individual was subsequently removed from the flight without further incident, and the FBI confirmed that no charges were filed in connection with either disturbance.

Broader Context of In-Flight Incidents

This incident is part of a troubling trend of in-flight disturbances. In April, a similar situation occurred when a flight from Bali to Melbourne had to turn back due to a passenger trying to force open a door while over the Indian Ocean. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has noted a significant increase in unruly passenger behavior, with nearly 6,000 incidents reported in 2021. Although the numbers have decreased, over 2,000 incidents were still recorded in 2023, leading to more than 400 enforcement actions and $7.5 million in fines against disruptive passengers.

Conclusion

The FAA maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy regarding unruly behavior on flights, emphasizing the importance of safety for all passengers and crew. The recent incidents highlight the ongoing challenges airlines face in ensuring a secure and peaceful travel environment. As the ANA flight continued to Houston, landing safely just before 1 p.m. local time, the focus remains on preventing such disturbances in the future to protect the integrity of air travel.
