Amirul Asyraff Muhammad Junus, 27-years-old, was sentenced on 1 December to 5 years and 2 weeks imprisonment as well as 6 strokes of the cane.
He had pleaded guilty to consorting with his friend, Muhammad Ikram Abdul Aziz, 26-years-old, to smuggle an illegal gun (a Shooters Sea Hawk pistol) and eight bullets, the latter was found with the weapon and bullets in his possession.
Amirul also confessed to possessing a baton in public.
Ikram was earlier sentenced in March this year to 7 years and 10 months of prison will 6 strokes of the cane after pleading guilty to possessing the pistol.
This is the first case of illegal firearm possession since 2009.
What happened?
Amirul and Ikram were close friends who had played for Tanjong Pagar United’s Under-18 football team back in 2012, they then joined the same gang.
Amirul found out in January 2019 that his ex-wife was beaten up by a man named Faris outside a club, the woman told him that Faris was from another gang.
Amirul then went to Ikram for advice because he wanted revenge, the latter then decided to get a gun to protect themselves and to scare Faris and his gang in an attempt to show that they couldn’t be bullied.
How he got the gun
In February 2019, Ikram visited a tattoo shop in Johor Bahru and met a man named “Boy JB” who told him that he would find a gun for him.
Ikram then gave him $900 before returning a few days later in a car with his parents (he had observed that customs officers seldom check belongings if he was with his parents), depositing a further $490 to Boy JB’s account.
They then met up and he was handed the gun, which he then smuggled into Singapore.
Ikram then showed the gun to Amirul and suggested bringing it to a settlement talk with the other gang, to which Amirul rejected.
Baton
Separately, In September 2019, Amirul was found with a baton inside his motorcycle box at Woodlands Checkpoint when returning to Singapore.
He reasoned that he found it in his flat and brought it with him to protect himself and his girlfriend in Malaysia.
Their crimes were uncovered the next month when two CNB officers detained Ikram for alleged drug offenses at Block 731 Jurong West Street 72.
His flat was then raided and the weapons were then discovered.
