Things are getting from bad to worst for the Singapore national football team, with the under-22 men’s team getting absolutely hammered by Malaysia and losing 7-0 in their final group game of the SEA Games 2023.
Perhaps they were inspired by English Premier League team Manchester United’s 7-0 loss to Liverpool and wanted to recreate their own version of history.
According to Channel NewsAsia, this was Singapore’s heaviest loss at the SEA games since the competition was divided into age groups more than 2 decades ago.
The Football Association of Singapore announced the embarrassing final score at the culmination of the game in Phnom Penh, drawing heavy ridicule and criticism from fans and netizens.
The latest defeat comes after Singapore’s lacklustre draw with minnows Laos on 6 May, with the team amassing 1 draw and 3 losses from 4 matches and failing to progress from the group stages with zero wins and a goal difference of -11.
The first half of the match saw Singapore going into the half time mark trailing Malaysia by 2 goals, with Malaysian winger T Saravanan and striker Haqimi Azim scoring the first two goals in the 14th and 45th-minute respectively.
Things then spiralled completely out of control in the second half, with Saravanan scoring again in the 47th minute to make it 3-0.
He then scored again in the 53rd and 60th minute, before captain Mukhairi Ajmal scored the 6th goal followed by Aiman Afif Mohd Afizul striking the nail in the Singaporean coffin, slotting home the 7th goal in the 90th minute to take the Malaysians into seventh heaven.
- I wonder what the admin is thinking as he/she is typing the hashtag. This is an embarrassment.
- The ones who should step down all the board members, those who set the direction that led us to this mess….
- Embarrassment to the country and to the flag. Shame on the FAS.
- So does that mean we gonna get 7 free kosong pratas?
