The (AVA) and Singapore Customshave been working intently to identify and block shipments of illicit untamed life andnatural life items pirated through Singapore. On 12 December 2015, Singapore Traditions blocked an air shipment of unlawful ivory and pangolin scales at the Changi Airfreight Center. The 800kg shipment, marked as wigs of engineered material”, started from Lagos, Nigeria, and was in transit to Vientiane, Laos, by means of Singapore. A closer examination of the shipment by Singapore Customs and AVA officers uncovered 255 bits of crude elephant tusks weighing around 505kg and pangolin scales weighing around 324kg. The shipment, worth an expected S$1.3 million, was seized. This is the fifth biggest seizure of illicit ivory by Singapore powers subsequent to 2002. A cargo sending organization regarding the shipment is helping AVA with the examinations.
