Japanese YouTuber helps M’sian traveller avoid baggage fee by carrying her belongings, internet questions her intelligence

A Japanese travel YouTuber has gone viral after sharing how she helped a Malaysian stranger avoid excess baggage charges at an airport, only to be warned by netizens that her act of kindness could have placed her in serious legal trouble.

The traveller, known online as A-chan, recounted meeting a Malaysian woman at Kansai International Airport whose luggage exceeded the airline’s baggage allowance.

According to her social media post, the woman’s baggage weighed 19kg despite a 15kg limit. This would have resulted in additional charges of about 12,000 yen (around S$96).

Wanting to help, A-chan agreed to transfer approximately 4kg of the woman’s belongings into her own luggage so she could avoid paying the excess baggage fee.

A-chan later admitted she briefly wondered whether the items could contain something prohibited, but decided to trust the stranger and proceeded with the arrangement.

Netizens raise safety concerns

While many online users praised the YouTuber for her kindness, others pointed out that carrying belongings for strangers at airports can be extremely risky.

Several commenters warned that travellers should never transport items they did not pack themselves, as they could unknowingly end up carrying illegal items, restricted merchandise or other prohibited goods across international borders.

Others noted that authorities may hold the person carrying the items responsible if banned or undeclared goods are discovered during security checks, regardless of whether they were aware of the contents.

The incident sparked widespread discussion online, with many urging travellers to exercise caution when approached by strangers at airports.

YouTuber acknowledges mistake

Following the wave of responses, A-chan admitted she had not fully considered the potential consequences of her actions.

She said she had been naive and only later realised how dangerous the situation could have become.

Although nothing improper was ultimately found and the encounter ended without incident, the YouTuber described it as an important lesson.

She added that she frequently travels overseas and would never agree to carry a stranger’s belongings again.

In a follow-up post, A-chan said she had exchanged contact information with the Malaysian traveller and remembered the encounter positively, but acknowledged that the decision involved significant risk.

Authorities advise travellers to carry only their own belongings

Customs and border authorities around the world routinely remind travellers not to transport packages, luggage or personal belongings for people they do not know.

Experts recommend packing and handling one’s own luggage, keeping belongings within sight at all times and politely declining requests to carry items on behalf of strangers.

The incident has since become a talking point online, with many agreeing that while helping others is admirable, airport security is one area where travellers should always prioritise caution over convenience.
