53-year-old US actress Jennifer Aniston, who rose to fame with her role as Rachel Greene in the hit sitcom Friends back in the 90s, shared her thoughts about social media influencers during an interview with Variety.
The actress said that social media influencers are “diluting” the jobs of actors and are becoming famous for “basically doing nothing”.
Aniston was speaking with fellow actor Sebastian Stan, who played the Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and they were discussing Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee’s now-infamous leaked “home video” in 1995.
Becoming famous for nothing
She then started discussing the changing facets of fame through the years, saying “It was right at the time when the internet really shaped a new culture about people becoming famous.”
She added that “this thing of people becoming famous for basically doing nothing but yet having these incredible careers.”
Diluting actors’ jobs
Aniston then name-dropped famous “influencers” such as Paris Hilton and Monica Lewinsky, to name a few.
She then expressed how lucky she feels to have been able to get “a little taste of the industry before it became what it is today. More streaming services, you’re famous from TikTok, you’re famous from YouTube, you’re famous from Instagram. It’s almost, like, it’s diluting the actor’s job.”
