The Smoking Marathoner’s Rise to Fame

Chen Bangxian became a notable figure in 2022 for his unusual approach to marathon running – chain-smoking while participating in these physically demanding races. His ability to not only finish marathons but also improve his personal records annually garnered widespread attention.

His remarkable ability to not only complete these demanding races but consistently improve his personal records year after year raised eyebrows.

However, his unique journey has hit a roadblock as he recently faced a two-year ban and the voiding of his results for smoking during a marathon this year.

The Two-Year Ban and Voided Results

Chen’s unconventional marathon journey faced a setback as the Xiamen Marathon organizing committee imposed a two-year ban on him. This decision came after he violated marathon rules by smoking during a race this year. In addition to the ban, his results and ranking from that specific marathon were voided.

The Xiamen Marathon organizing committee, in a statement released on January 12, clarified that Chen’s actions were in direct violation of established marathon rules, explicitly prohibiting smoking during the course. The committee highlighted the importance of adhering to these regulations to ensure fair competition and uphold the integrity of the sport.

Smoking While Running, Still Can Break Record

Chen completed this year’s event in three hours and 33 minutes, which, while not surpassing his 2022 record of three hours and 28 minutes, demonstrated his consistent stamina. Despite the controversy surrounding his smoking habit, his athletic prowess remains noteworthy.

The organizing committee further stated that Chen Bangxian is barred from participating in any events organized by the Xiamen Marathon committee for the next two years. Additionally, they intend to submit a request to the Chinese Athletic Association (CCA) for additional penalties, as the CCA serves as China’s national governing body for athletics.

‘Smoking Brother’s’ Marathon Legacy

Chen Bangxian, affectionately known as ‘Smoking Brother,’ gained attention since 2017 for his unique marathon ritual. The nickname originated after his participation in the Hangzhou Marathon that year. Despite controversy and mixed opinions – some in awe and others expressing disapproval – he continued to participate in various marathons, including the Xiamen Marathon and a 50km ultra-marathon in Lishui City.

The year 2022 marked Chen’s return to the Xiamen Marathon after a three-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Even during the pandemic-induced pause, his unconventional habit remained a topic of discussion, with opinions divided on whether it was admirable or disrespectful to fellow competitors.
