Police in Malaysia are set to question Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah after a viral video allegedly showed him firing a rifle at a cow during an Aidiladha korban ceremony.

The incident has triggered widespread debate online, with many Malaysians questioning whether the use of a firearm during a religious animal sacrifice complied with proper religious and legal procedures.

The ceremony reportedly took place during a state-level Hari Raya Haji korban programme in Kuala Perlis involving 25 cows.

According to reports, one of the cows suddenly broke loose and became aggressive before it could be slaughtered, causing panic among those present.

Clips circulating on social media appeared to show Abu Bakar firing at the animal from a distance while standing beneath a makeshift tent.

The footage quickly attracted criticism, with some netizens expressing concern over safety issues and whether live ammunition was used in a crowded public setting.

Perlis Chief Minister Defends Actions After Cow Became Aggressive

Responding to the backlash, Abu Bakar insisted that he did not shoot the cow “for fun” and claimed his actions were necessary to prevent possible injuries or deaths.

He explained that the animal had become uncontrollable and could no longer be restrained safely by the handlers present.

According to the Perlis chief minister, he aimed at the cow’s leg rather than its head in an attempt to stop it without immediately killing it.

After the animal collapsed, the korban slaughter was then carried out.

Abu Bakar also pointed to several recent incidents across Malaysia involving runaway sacrificial animals causing fatal accidents.

One such incident reportedly occurred in Ulu Tiram, Johor on the same day, where a man was killed and another seriously injured after being attacked by a cow during a korban ritual.

The chief minister suggested that failing to act quickly could have put nearby participants at serious risk.

Police Investigating Firearm & Ammunition Used

Despite his explanation, Malaysian police have launched preliminary investigations into the incident.

Kangar police chief Assistant Commissioner Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop confirmed that authorities are looking into the type of firearm and ammunition allegedly used during the ceremony.

Investigators are also examining whether live rounds were discharged and if the firearm was used lawfully under existing regulations.

Police said no official report had been lodged so far, but the viral nature of the video prompted authorities to begin inquiries independently.

The Perlis Menteri Besar is expected to be summoned to provide a statement regarding the incident.

Viral Incident Sparks Debate Over Religious Practices & Public Safety

The controversy has fuelled broader discussions online surrounding animal handling practices during Hari Raya Haji celebrations in Malaysia.

While some defended Abu Bakar’s actions as an emergency response to a dangerous situation, others questioned whether alternative methods could have been used instead of firing a rifle near a public gathering.

Animal welfare concerns, firearm safety and religious compliance have all become major talking points following the viral incident.

The case has also drawn attention because it involves a high-ranking Malaysian political figure, adding further public scrutiny to the ongoing investigation.

Authorities have not yet announced whether any offences may have been committed, as investigations remain ongoing.
