A 27-year-old Malaysian motorcyclist was killed in a tragic road accident in Johor Bahru after he was reportedly flung from a bridge during his morning commute to Singapore.
The fatal incident occurred at approximately 8am on 11 June along the North-South Expressway (NSE), leaving one rider dead and another injured.
According to local authorities, the victim was travelling towards Johor Bahru city centre when the collision took place on a section of the expressway where traffic was moving slowly due to wet weather conditions.
Rider Was On His Way To Singapore For Work
Johor Bahru South police chief Raub Selamat said preliminary investigations revealed that the victim was employed as a storekeeper in Singapore and was heading to work at the time of the accident.
Police believe another motorcycle crashed into the victim’s motorcycle while both riders were travelling along the expressway.
Road conditions were reportedly slippery following rainfall, while traffic in the area had slowed significantly due to congestion.
The impact of the collision caused the victim to lose control of his motorcycle before being thrown from the bridge onto a highway below.
Victim Pronounced Dead At The Scene
Emergency responders were dispatched to the location shortly after the accident was reported.
However, the rider suffered catastrophic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities stated that the victim sustained severe head injuries as well as a fractured left leg.
The second motorcyclist involved in the crash, who is also 27 years old, survived but sustained multiple injuries.
He was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment after suffering a fractured left arm along with injuries to his face and right arm.
Investigation Ongoing
Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Officials are currently examining the sequence of events that led to the collision and whether weather conditions may have played a role.
The incident serves as another reminder of the dangers faced by thousands of daily commuters who travel between Johor Bahru and Singapore, particularly during peak-hour traffic and adverse weather conditions.
Motorcyclists are often among the most vulnerable road users on the busy cross-border routes connecting Malaysia and Singapore, where heavy traffic, wet roads and limited reaction time can significantly increase the risk of serious accidents.
Authorities have urged all road users to exercise extra caution during rainy conditions and maintain safe distances from other vehicles to reduce the likelihood of similar tragedies.
