Malaysian Rapper Namewee Fails In Bid To Reduce Or Drop Drug Possession Charges

Malaysian rapper and filmmaker Namewee has failed in his attempt to have his drug possession charges reduced or withdrawn after prosecutors rejected a representation submitted by his legal team.

The decision was reportedly delivered during proceedings at a magistrate’s court in Malaysia on Apr. 29.

Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, is currently facing two separate charges linked to alleged drug and substance possession offences stemming from an incident that took place last year.

The court has since fixed May 29 for further case management.

Charges Linked To Kuala Lumpur Hotel Incident

According to court documents, Namewee was charged on Jan. 19 for allegedly possessing 1.57 grammes of methamphetamine inside a hotel room located along Jalan Conlay in Kuala Lumpur on Oct. 22, 2025.

Under Malaysia’s Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, the offence carries penalties of up to five years’ imprisonment, a maximum fine of RM100,000, or both. The amount converts to approximately S$28,600.

He also faces a second charge involving alleged possession of 0.78 grammes of sildenafil under the Poisons Act 1952.

If convicted on the second offence, he could face up to five years in jail, a fine of RM50,000 (around S$14,300), or both.

Namewee has previously pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Earlier Drug Consumption Charge Was Withdrawn

The rapper had earlier faced an additional charge linked to alleged self-administration of drugs.

However, Malaysian media previously reported that prosecutors withdrew that charge in December 2025 after pathology results allegedly returned negative findings.

The ruling resulted in Namewee being discharged over that specific accusation.

Despite that development, the current possession-related charges remain active.

Case Originally Emerged After Influencer’s Death

Public attention surrounding the case intensified after Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh Yu-hsin was found dead inside the same hotel room where Namewee had reportedly been staying.

The incident triggered widespread speculation online and attracted significant media coverage across Malaysia, Taiwan, and other parts of Asia.

Namewee has repeatedly denied any involvement in the influencer’s death, insisting that the “worst thing” he did was consuming excessive alcohol.

Following the incident, he reportedly evaded authorities briefly before eventually surrendering himself to police. He was later remanded for six days to assist investigations.

Rapper Says Career Was Severely Affected

The controversy has reportedly had a major impact on Namewee’s career and finances.

According to earlier statements, he claimed multiple performances and entertainment projects were cancelled following the allegations.

He also said the fallout forced him into financial difficulties, adding that he had to seek new work opportunities after losing commercial engagements.

Known for his controversial music videos and outspoken social commentary, Namewee has long been one of Malaysia’s most polarising entertainment figures, frequently generating headlines across the region.
