A group of Malaysian tourists has come under heavy criticism after several videos surfaced online allegedly showing them mocking locals in China and making insensitive remarks about body odour while travelling.
The clips quickly gained traction across social media platforms, with many netizens condemning the behaviour as disrespectful and damaging to Malaysia’s reputation abroad.
Many online users stressed that travelling should encourage cultural understanding and respect, rather than public ridicule and judgement of people from different backgrounds.
Tourists Allegedly Mocked Locals While Waiting For A Bus
One of the viral videos showed the group queuing alongside other passengers while waiting to board a bus in China.
The footage captured one woman covering her nose while another allegedly shouted comments about the smell around them.
According to social media users who reposted the video, one individual could be heard saying:
“It smells so bad. Did none of you shower?”
The comments immediately sparked backlash, as many felt the remarks were inappropriate, especially when made loudly in a crowded public area surrounded by local residents.
Viewers also pointed out that recording and publicly sharing such reactions further amplified the disrespect.
Similar Remarks Were Allegedly Made About An E-Hailing Driver
In another clip circulating online, members of the same group were allegedly heard discussing the smell inside an e-hailing vehicle.
One woman reportedly commented that the driver smelled unpleasant and went on to make generalised remarks about local people.
She was allegedly heard saying that Chinese people were “lazy to shower”, a statement that many online users condemned as offensive and discriminatory.
Although another video later showed her saying a different driver smelled better, many felt the damage had already been done.
The repeated use of the word “smelly” in public drew significant criticism from viewers both in Malaysia and overseas.
Netizens Say Tourists Do Not Represent All Malaysians
The incident triggered widespread reactions, with many Malaysians distancing themselves from the behaviour.
Several social media users said the issue was not whether someone encountered an unpleasant smell, but rather how they chose to react.
Many pointed out that there is a difference between quietly dealing with personal discomfort and openly mocking strangers in their own country.
