I am tired of society and my parents judging millenials or gen Z as being the strawberry generation.
Even in my workplace, I got chided by my boss just because I had asked to wfh an additional day for that particular week. He agreed to my request but not before lecturing me on how the younger generation now only want the easy way out of things and they cant take hardships.
To those older or boomer generation people, let me tell you how in a few ways the younger generation lives are harder than yours.
1. In the past, Singapore was still developing and as long as those with a certain level of education qualification would be able to find a decent job. Currently, a degree only gets you a spot in interviews and companies often want candidates with experience. We are also currently competing with foreigners both in schools and in workplaces. It is no longer competing among Singaporeans only, but with global talents.
2. Cars COE used to be in the range of 20k to 30k in the early 2000s. HDB used to be about 200k. Cars COE are hitting 120k now with HDBs going for 1 million, even BTOs are launching at above 400k easily. Prices have gone up 4x to 6x on average but has the salary trend gone up the same to match the increase in prices? I doubt so.
3. Even basic food was cheap previously, you could eat a good meal for $2 or perhaps even lesser than that. For the younger working generation even food at coffeeshops are now easily $5 and usually the portion that they give for a $5 meal is probably only enough for a 10 year old kid to feel full.
Yes, we may have the better quality of lives in general, but the pressure on us is also much more than the older generation. In fact, it may not be better quality at all if it affects our mental health altogether.
If there are any who feel what I said is wrong, do let me hear your perspective then.
