Mother of Underage Victim Plans Civil Suit Against Ian Fang Following Sexual Offences
The mother of a girl involved in a high-profile underage sex case with former Mediacorp actor Ian Fang has announced her intention to file a civil lawsuit against him. In a candid five-hour interview with Chinese-language media outlet 8world, she expressed her determination to pursue legal action until Fang is financially ruined. “I will sue him until he goes bankrupt,” she stated, emphasizing that any damages awarded would be donated to charity, as her family does not intend to benefit from Fang’s financial losses.
Fang, 35, was sentenced to 40 months in prison after pleading guilty to engaging in sexual acts with the girl, who was 15 at the time. The encounters occurred on nine separate occasions between June and July 2024, with the mother revealing that the girl contracted human papillomavirus (HPV) as a result of these interactions. She accused Fang of “coercing and luring” her daughter, leveraging his celebrity status to manipulate the young girl into a sexual relationship. The mother recounted that Fang instructed her daughter to keep their encounters a secret, threatening that he would face jail time if she disclosed the truth to her parents.
The victim’s mother expressed her dissatisfaction with the current sentencing, advocating for a harsher punishment for Fang. She believes that he should face corporal punishment, stating, “He must be caned,” arguing that such a punishment would serve as a deterrent against future offenses. She lamented the lack of physical consequences, saying, “If he was caned, there would always be a scar on his buttocks, so he can’t go out and seduce others.”
Legal experts have clarified that Fang was not subjected to caning due to the age of the victim at the time of the offenses. Had the girl been under 14, Fang would have faced rape charges, which carry significantly harsher penalties, including a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane. Conversely, if the victim had been over 16, the charges might not have been pursued at all, as that is the age of consent in Singapore.
The mother also expressed confusion over the initial gag order that protected Fang’s identity, suggesting that revealing his name could have encouraged other potential victims to come forward. Despite the challenges, she remains resolute in her pursuit of justice, having already engaged a lawyer to assist with the civil suit. “He ruined my daughter’s life and infected her with a sexually transmitted disease,” she declared, emphasizing the emotional toll the situation has taken on her family. “My daughter’s first time should be with a man who truly loves her — not to such a scumbag, such trash, such an animal, such a wolf in sheep’s clothing!”
This case has sparked widespread discussion about the legal system’s handling of sexual offenses involving minors and the societal implications of such incidents. The mother’s commitment to seeking justice reflects a broader call for accountability and protection for vulnerable individuals in similar situations.
