In a troubling case that has captured public attention, former Mediacorp actor Ian Fang, 35, was sentenced to 40 months in prison after pleading guilty to engaging in sexual activities with a minor. The victim, who was just 15 years old at the time, contracted a sexually transmitted infection (STI) as a result of their encounters, which were detailed in court proceedings on May 19, 2025.

Fang, whose full name is Fang Wei Jie, first met the girl at an entertainment event on May 4, 2024. Following their initial meeting, they exchanged contact information and began communicating daily. Over the course of June and July 2024, Fang engaged in sexual relations with the teenager on nine separate occasions. Notably, the prosecution revealed that Fang had unprotected sex with the girl five times, only using a condom on two occasions in July when she insisted.

The nature of their relationship took a concerning turn when Fang visited the girl while she was quarantined for COVID-19. On June 6, 2024, after being checked into a hotel by her mother, Fang brought beer and had unprotected sex with her, marking her first sexual experience. Despite her requests for him to wear a condom, he refused.

In a further breach of trust, Fang continued to meet the girl while she was still under quarantine. Less than a week later, he arranged to meet her again, this time leaving the hotel to dine together before returning to his home, where they had unprotected sex once more.

The situation escalated when the girl was hospitalized for a flu infection on June 17, 2024. Fang visited her in the hospital after her mother had left, and they engaged in sexual activity in her private room.

The victim later sought medical attention due to pain in her genital area, leading to a diagnosis of human papillomavirus (HPV), a common STI. The girl’s mother eventually discovered the nature of Fang’s relationship with her daughter and filed a police report in August 2024.

Following the investigation, Fang attempted to contact the girl, despite being instructed by law enforcement not to do so. He expressed suicidal thoughts if he were to be imprisoned and pressured her to persuade her mother to withdraw the charges. This manipulation took a toll on the girl’s mental health, leading to her admission to the Institute of Mental Health for treatment of adjustment disorder.

The prosecution emphasized the lasting impact of Fang’s actions on the victim, stating, “Notwithstanding the outcome of this case, the victim will continue to live with the knowledge that her very first sexual encounter was one that was wrong and ended with criminal proceedings.”

Fang is set to begin his sentence on June 16, 2025, as the case continues to raise awareness about the protection of minors and the responsibilities of adults in positions of influence.
