A horrifying road accident in Terengganu, Malaysia, has left an 18-year-old dead after a lamp post reportedly collapsed onto a van during a collision involving a hatchback and a commercial vehicle.
The victim, identified as Wah Han Keong, died instantly in the freak accident that took place along Jalan Losong Feri near Kampung Losong Panglima Perang on May 19 at around 3:36pm.
According to Malaysian authorities, the teenager had been travelling in a Nissan Vanette van together with his father when tragedy struck. The van was reportedly heading from Taman Manir towards Kuala Terengganu when a Volkswagen Golf GTI travelling in the opposite direction allegedly lost control.
Police said the car skidded before crashing into a street lamp post positioned along the road divider. Moments later, the vehicle veered into the opposite lane and slammed into the van carrying the teenager and his father.
Lamp Post Crushed Van During Collision
The violent impact caused the lamp post to topple directly onto the van, resulting in catastrophic injuries.
Chinese-language newspaper Sin Chew Daily reported that the fallen lamp post struck the teenager with such force that his head was severed from his body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim’s father suffered minor injuries to his hands and was treated shortly after the incident.
The Volkswagen driver, a 43-year-old man, had been travelling with his 31-year-old wife and their three children aged one, eight and 11 at the time of the crash. Authorities said one of the children, an eight-year-old, sustained minor leg injuries.
Emergency responders arrived quickly after the collision, with images from the scene showing severe damage to both vehicles and the fallen lamp post sprawled across the road.
Police Investigating Dangerous Driving Case
Malaysian police have launched investigations into the incident under laws relating to reckless or dangerous driving causing death.
Fatal road accidents involving roadside infrastructure such as lamp posts are relatively rare, but such incidents often raise concerns over speeding, vehicle control and road safety measures.
The tragedy has since sparked reactions online, with many expressing shock over the unusual and gruesome nature of the accident. Social media users also extended condolences to the victim’s family following the sudden loss.
Road safety experts frequently remind motorists to remain cautious during wet weather and high-speed driving situations, especially on roads with central dividers and fixed roadside structures that can become deadly hazards during major collisions.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the exact cause of the accident and whether excessive speed or other factors contributed to the fatal crash.
