M’sian Minister Says Vision Of S’poreans Working In Malaysia Is Slowly Taking Shape

A Malaysian cabinet minister has said that his previously controversial remarks about Singaporeans eventually working in Malaysia are gradually becoming a reality as more businesses establish operations across the Causeway.

Malaysia’s Housing and Local Government Minister, Nga Kor Ming, recently revisited comments he made in 2022 that drew attention on both sides of the border.

According to the minister, the remarks were never intended as a criticism of Singapore but rather reflected his hopes for Malaysia’s economic development and competitiveness in the region.

Clarifies Remarks Made In 2022

Speaking during a recent interview with a Chinese-language newspaper, Nga explained that his earlier statement about Singaporeans becoming foreign workers in Malaysia had been misunderstood by some members of the public.

He said his intention was to encourage Malaysia to strengthen its economy and create opportunities attractive enough for professionals from neighbouring countries, including Singapore, to consider employment there.

The minister noted that the idea was not about competing against Singapore but about ensuring Malaysia continues to grow and attract investment.

He added that recent developments suggest cross-border employment trends are evolving in ways that support his earlier observations.

Companies Expanding Operations In Malaysia

As part of his argument, Nga pointed to multinational companies that have expanded or shifted parts of their operations into Malaysia in recent years.

He suggested that such business movements are creating new employment opportunities and increasing economic activity, particularly in southern Malaysia.

According to him, there are already Singaporeans crossing the border for work opportunities, something he believes could become increasingly common in the future.

While the numbers remain relatively small compared to Malaysians working in Singapore, Nga said the trend demonstrates how regional economic integration continues to deepen.

Malaysia And Singapore Should Prosper Together

The minister stressed that Malaysia is not actively trying to recruit Singaporeans as foreign workers but instead seeks stronger cooperation and friendship between both countries.

Describing the relationship between the neighbouring nations as one built on close ties, he said the success of one country often benefits the other.

Nga emphasised that Malaysia and Singapore should continue supporting each other’s growth, noting that economic prosperity on either side of the Causeway creates opportunities for businesses, workers and investors.

He added that maintaining strong bilateral relations remains important for both nations’ long-term success.

RTS Link Expected To Boost Cross-Border Movement

Nga also highlighted the upcoming Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System as a major development that could reshape commuting patterns between the two countries.

The rail connection, scheduled to begin operations by early 2027, is expected to significantly reduce travel times between Singapore and Johor Bahru.

According to the minister, improved connectivity will make cross-border employment more convenient and attractive.

He pointed out that many Malaysians already earn salaries in Singapore dollars while spending and investing in Malaysia, benefiting from differences in living costs and currency values.

The minister believes enhanced transport links and continued economic growth could further strengthen cross-border labour mobility in the years ahead.

Ringgit Strength Recovery Sparks Renewed Discussion

Nga’s earlier comments resurfaced after the Malaysian ringgit strengthened against the Singapore dollar earlier this year, reaching levels not seen in several years.

The currency movement reignited discussions online about the future balance of economic opportunities between Singapore and Malaysia.

While many Singaporeans continue to view Singapore as offering higher salaries and stronger career prospects, some observers have noted that improving infrastructure, lower operating costs and growing investment in Malaysia could make certain sectors increasingly competitive.

Whether large numbers of Singaporeans will eventually choose to work in Malaysia remains uncertain, but the minister maintains that closer economic integration between the two countries will create opportunities for people on both sides of the border.
