Myanmar Man Who Escaped Singapore In Car Boot Returns 9 Years Later With Fake Passport, Gets Jail And Caning

A 43-year-old Myanmar national has been sentenced to 16 weeks in jail and three strokes of the cane after illegally leaving Singapore through a smuggling operation before returning nearly a decade later using a passport bearing false particulars.

The man, identified as Min Aung Ngwe Paing, pleaded guilty to multiple immigration-related offences. Additional charges were taken into consideration during sentencing.

Court documents revealed that Min first entered Singapore in September 2013 on a 30-day social visit pass.

Overstayed To Look For Work

After arriving in Singapore, Min reportedly remained in the country beyond the expiry of his visit pass.

His visit pass expired in October 2013, but he continued staying in Singapore illegally for more than four months.

According to reports, he overstayed because he was looking for employment opportunities.

As his illegal stay continued, Min allegedly became increasingly concerned about being detected and arrested by authorities.

Seeking a way out, he was introduced to a man who claimed he could help him leave Singapore without going through immigration checks.

Hidden Inside Car Boot To Leave Singapore

The arrangement reportedly came with a hefty price tag.

Min agreed to pay S$3,000 to be smuggled out of Singapore and into Malaysia.

On the night of March 9, 2014, he met the smuggler at a car park near Woodlands. He was allegedly instructed to hide inside the boot of a vehicle while the driver crossed the border through Woodlands Checkpoint.

Min complied and was transported across the Causeway without being detected.

Roughly 40 minutes later, he arrived in Johor Bahru.

From Malaysia, he continued his journey by bus to Thailand before eventually returning to Myanmar.

Returned Nearly A Decade Later

After spending about nine years outside Singapore, Min decided to return in November 2024.

Reports indicated that he wanted to seek employment opportunities due to the ongoing civil unrest and instability in Myanmar.

To facilitate his return, Min allegedly paid around S$610 to an agent to obtain a passport that contained details which did not belong to him.

Using the fraudulent travel document, he managed to re-enter Singapore.

However, his stay in the country once again became unlawful after he overstayed.

Arrested After More Than A Year

Authorities eventually arrested Min on May 12, 2026.

At the time of his arrest, he had reportedly overstayed in Singapore for approximately one year, five months and 28 days.

During mitigation, Min appealed for a lighter sentence, explaining that his elderly parents were living in Myanmar and expressing hope that he could return home as soon as possible.

The court ultimately sentenced him to 16 weeks’ imprisonment and three strokes of the cane for the immigration offences.

The case highlights Singapore’s strict enforcement against illegal entry, overstaying and the use of fraudulent travel documents, all of which carry severe penalties under the law.
