A family gathering turned into a terrifying scene when a mini gas stove used for a hotpot meal suddenly exploded, sending a huge fireball towards diners and injuring three people.
The incident happened at a home in Vietnam, where around 15 relatives, including children, were gathered around the table enjoying a hotpot meal.
What started as a normal family meal quickly turned into chaos when the small gas burner suddenly burst into flames. Two people suffered serious burns and remain hospitalised, while another person sustained lighter injuries and has since been discharged.
Hotpot Dinner Turns Into Panic As Stove Bursts Into Flames
According to Vietnamese media outlet Vietnam.vn, the accident occurred at around 10am on Aug 16.
A video circulating online showed the group sitting around the dining table while using a mini gas stove to heat their hotpot.
Moments later, the stove suddenly exploded, producing a large fireball that shocked everyone at the table.
The explosion caused panic among the diners, with adults and children quickly moving away from the table as they tried to escape the flames and check on those injured.
Three people were hurt in the incident. Two victims suffered severe burns and were sent to Cai Nuoc General Hospital for treatment, while another victim with minor injuries was later allowed to leave the hospital.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the explosion, with attention likely focused on factors such as the condition of the gas canister, installation of the stove and whether it was used safely.
Mini Gas Stoves Are Convenient But Can Pose Fire Risks
Portable gas stoves are commonly used for hotpot meals because they are affordable, compact and easy to set up. However, safety experts have warned that improper use or damaged equipment can create serious fire hazards.
Issues such as gas leaks, faulty burners, overheating or incorrectly installed canisters may increase the risk of sudden flare-ups or explosions.
Users are advised to check that the stove and gas canister are in good condition before use, keep the canister away from excessive heat and avoid using portable gas burners in poorly ventilated areas.
The family gathering was meant to be a simple meal shared among relatives, but a sudden gas stove explosion turned the hotpot dinner into a frightening incident. The accident has also sparked online reminders for people to be more cautious when using portable cooking equipment at home.
