SBS Transit Bus Mounts Kerb In Geylang And Crashes Into Traffic Camera, No Injuries Reported
An SBS Transit bus mounted a kerb and crashed into a traffic camera in Geylang on Sunday (14 June), leaving behind a damaged roadside installation but thankfully causing no injuries.
Photos circulating online showed the bus resting on a grass verge after knocking over both a traffic enforcement camera and a nearby power box.
The incident happened at the junction of Geylang Lorong 1 and Sims Avenue at around 12.45pm.
Bus Stops Just Before Sheltered Walkway
Images shared on Facebook showed the bus ending up just inches away from a sheltered pedestrian walkway.
The impact completely toppled a power box, with part of it ending up on the walkway itself. The traffic camera was also left leaning dangerously at an angle after being struck.
The damaged roadside infrastructure may have prevented the bus from travelling further onto the pedestrian path, potentially averting a more serious incident.
Police: Bus Believed To Have Self-Skidded
According to the Singapore Police Force (SPF), the bus is believed to have self-skidded before losing control.
No injuries were reported among passengers, pedestrians or other road users.
A 58-year-old male bus driver is currently assisting police with investigations.
Investigations are ongoing.
Traffic Cameras Also Detect Speeding Offences
Traffic cameras installed around Singapore were initially introduced to catch motorists who beat red lights.
However, from April 2024, authorities expanded their use to also detect speeding offences.
The move quickly proved effective, with hundreds of speeding violations detected within weeks of activation.
While some motorists may joke about one less traffic camera being operational, damaging public infrastructure remains a serious matter, and authorities will likely conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident.
Reminder For Motorists During Wet Weather
Although the exact cause has not been confirmed, self-skidding incidents can occur due to slippery road surfaces, sudden manoeuvres, excessive speed, tyre issues, or unexpected road conditions.
Drivers are reminded to reduce speed during rainy weather and remain alert, especially at busy junctions and urban roads.
