I remember the day I met my Korean boyfriend. He had a kind face and a gentle demeanor, and I knew from the start that he was the one for me. He swept me off my feet, and I was sure that our relationship was going to be a long and happy one.
Little did I know that my dream relationship was going to turn into a nightmare.
It started off innocently enough. He was always so attentive and caring, and I felt so lucky to have found him. But after a few months, things started to change. He became increasingly possessive and jealous, and would get angry if I ever did anything he deemed inappropriate.
At first, I brushed off his behavior as being overly protective, but it soon became clear that his possessiveness was turning into something more sinister. He started to get physically and emotionally abusive towards me, and I was too scared to speak up.
I kept telling myself that things would get better, but they only got worse. He would hit me, throw things at me, and even threaten me with his fists and even take my money.
I was too scared to tell anyone, so I kept quiet and endured the abuse in silence.
I eventually found the courage to leave him, and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. But it wasn’t until after I left him that I truly understood how dangerous my situation had been.
I started to do some research and found out about Korean men’s domestic abuse statistics, and my heart sank. It was heartbreaking to learn that so many women in Korea were facing the same situation I had been in.
I knew then that I had to do something to help other women in my situation. I decided to start a support group for victims of domestic violence, and I also reached out to various organizations to help spread awareness about this issue.
Today, I’m happy to say that I’m in a much better place. I’m in a safe, healthy relationship and I’m doing my part to help other women in similar situations.
