Six Arrested in Shocking Phuket Bomb Plot, They planned to plant bombs in Airport, Beach & more

Authorities in Phuket are on high alert after six suspects were arrested for plotting to plant bombs at major tourist hotspots. According to Thai officials, the men allegedly intended to cause panic and disrupt the local economy. The group’s plan included hiding explosives at prominent locations such as Phuket International Airport, Patong Beach, Promthep Cape, and Surin Beach. The suspects reportedly confessed during questioning that they were hired to transport and place the devices across the island.

Early on June 24, police intercepted a suspicious vehicle in Phang Nga province carrying two suspects, identified as 29-year-old Muhama Wadeng and 27-year-old Sulaiman Gaza. The pair admitted they were transporting a bomb from Songkhla to Phuket, following instructions from an unidentified mastermind. Police believe the plot is linked to insurgent activities in Thailand’s deep south, aimed at creating chaos in popular tourist destinations.

Explosives Neutralised at Phuket Airport, Patong Beach, Promthep Cape

Thanks to swift action by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team and K-9 units, the device at Phuket International Airport was found inside a white motorcycle and safely defused. At Promthep Cape, authorities discovered a bomb hidden in an aluminium can beneath a staircase. While initial attempts to neutralise the device failed three times, the fourth try was successful, averting what could have been a devastating incident.

Meanwhile, on Patong Beach, officers unearthed another explosive buried around 200 metres from Loma Public Park. The bomb disposal operation, which unfolded before stunned beachgoers, was carried out without injury. Authorities are continuing their search for two more bombs believed to have been planted on Surin Beach, with efforts resuming early on June 27 to ensure the safety of locals and tourists.

Officials Warn of Threats to Phuket Tourism

Commander of the 4th Army Region, Paisarn Noosang, revealed that the seized bombs were designed to make loud noises rather than cause fatalities, suggesting a deliberate attempt to frighten rather than kill. He added that insurgent leaders based in a neighbouring country were trying to destabilise Thailand’s tourism sector by targeting key travel hubs. Such bomb threats can severely impact Phuket tourism and raise concerns about Thailand travel safety among international visitors.

The case underscores the importance of vigilance for travellers, residents, and authorities alike. Tourists are advised to stay informed through official news channels and avoid suspicious objects or unattended bags in public spaces. Meanwhile, Thai security forces remain on high alert, determined to protect the safety and reputation of the country’s key tourist destinations.
