Travellers Flying Out Of Thailand To Pay Higher Airport Departure Tax From June 20

Travellers leaving Thailand by air may soon have to pay more for their flights after Thai authorities approved a sharp increase in the country’s airport departure tax.

According to reports from Thailand, the country’s Civil Aviation Board has approved a 53 per cent increase in international departure fees, which will take effect from June 20, 2026.

The international departure charge will rise to 1,120 Thai Baht, which is approximately S$41. Meanwhile, the departure fee for domestic flights within Thailand will increase from 100 baht to 150 baht, equivalent to about S$5.50.

The departure tax is typically bundled into airline ticket prices, meaning travellers may notice higher airfare costs when booking flights departing from Thailand in the coming months.

Singapore Travellers Could Face Slightly Higher Airfares

Thailand remains one of the most popular holiday destinations for Singaporeans, with cities such as Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai and Hat Yai attracting millions of regional tourists every year.

Budget carriers and full-service airlines operating between Singapore and Thailand may eventually adjust ticket pricing to account for the higher airport charges.

For frequent travellers, especially those making short getaway trips during long weekends or school holidays, the increase could slightly raise overall travel expenses.

Although the additional cost per ticket may not appear significant individually, families and larger travel groups could feel the impact more noticeably when booking return flights.

The revised fee structure applies to passengers departing Thailand, rather than those arriving in the country.

Thai Authorities Say Funds Will Improve Airports

Thai authorities reportedly said the higher departure charges are intended to support improvements in the aviation sector and airport infrastructure.

Part of the revenue collected will reportedly go towards upgrading airport technology, improving passenger facilities, and enhancing airport services across the country.

Thailand’s tourism industry has continued recovering strongly in recent years, with international visitor arrivals rebounding due to strong regional demand and increased flight connectivity.

The country remains heavily dependent on tourism revenue, making airport infrastructure and aviation services an important part of its economic strategy.

Concerns Over Rising Travel Costs

The sudden scale of the increase has already triggered online discussions among travellers and tourism observers, with some expressing concern that Southeast Asia’s traditionally affordable travel costs may gradually rise further.

Departure taxes and passenger service charges are common across many countries in the region. However, a jump of more than 50 per cent at one time is considered relatively substantial.

Despite the increase, Thailand is still expected to remain a highly popular destination for Singapore travellers due to its food, shopping, beaches, nightlife and relatively affordable accommodation options compared to many other international destinations.

Low-cost carriers are also expected to continue maintaining competitive pricing on regional routes, although airfare fluctuations may become more noticeable during peak travel periods.
