A senior police officer in South Korea is under investigation after allegedly destroying evidence and leaking confidential information related to a high-profile murder case involving the son of a fellow police officer.
Authorities have applied for an arrest warrant against the inspector, who led the investigation into the killing of a teenage girl in May. The allegations have sparked public concern over potential misconduct and attempts to obstruct justice within the police force.
The inspector is suspected of sharing sensitive details about the investigation with the suspect’s father and directing the destruction of evidence that could have been crucial to the prosecution’s case.
Teenager Allegedly Kidnapped and Murdered
The case centres on 23-year-old Jang Yoonki, who is accused of abducting and murdering a secondary school student identified as Lee Chaewon.
According to investigators, the incident took place on May 5 when Jang allegedly parked his vehicle in a secluded area and left the passenger door open before approaching the victim from behind.
He is accused of placing the teenager in a chokehold, forcing her into the vehicle and stabbing her.
A male student who attempted to intervene was reportedly seriously injured during the attack.
The incident was captured on CCTV cameras, and investigators later discovered bloodstains believed to belong to the victim on the exterior of Jang’s vehicle.
Prosecution Pursues More Serious Charges
During court proceedings, Jang reportedly denied that the crime was planned in advance.
He allegedly claimed that he had intended to take his own life and wanted to kill another person before doing so.
However, prosecutors uncovered evidence that raised questions about his explanation.
Among the items discovered in his residence was a life-sized sex doll that reportedly showed significant damage around the chest and neck areas.
Investigators also allegedly found notes dating back to his school years containing references to vehicle abductions and sexual crimes.
As a result, prosecutors upgraded the case from a murder charge to one involving allegations of murder linked to sexual offences.
Investigation Team Accused of Leaking Information
The controversy deepened after allegations emerged that members of the investigation team had shared confidential information with Jang’s father, who is currently serving as a police officer.
Investigators suspect that details regarding the status of arrest warrant applications were disclosed to him during the investigation.
The team is also accused of providing access to Jang’s rented accommodation by sharing the address and door access code.
According to reports, this may have enabled the suspect’s father to remove and dispose of the sex doll before investigators could properly examine it as evidence.
Authorities are now examining whether there was any collusion between the father and members of the investigation team.
Claims of Evidence Destruction
The investigation team has also been accused of failing to secure cable ties found inside Jang’s vehicle, which could potentially support allegations that the crime was planned in advance.
More seriously, the lead inspector is suspected of instructing another officer to delete dashcam footage recovered from the suspect’s vehicle.
While these allegations remain under investigation, authorities have yet to confirm whether evidence was intentionally destroyed.
Police have since conducted searches at both the inspector’s residence and the police station where the team was based.
Entire Investigation Team Removed From Duty
In response to the allegations, South Korean police removed the investigation team from active duty on July 6.
The suspended team includes the lead inspector and four other officers.
Authorities stated that the move was necessary to preserve the integrity and impartiality of the ongoing investigation.
A dedicated investigative unit has since been established at headquarters level to examine the allegations of misconduct and determine whether criminal charges should be pursued against those involved.
Meanwhile, Jang is scheduled to appear again before the court on July 13 as legal proceedings continue.
The case has attracted widespread attention in South Korea due to both the brutality of the alleged crime and the accusations that police officers may have interfered with the investigation.
