WOMAN WORKS 6 DAYS/WEEK FOR 9HRS/DAY BUT ONLY EARNS $1.4K/MONTH

Question regarding full time jobs

Advertisements

Hello! A friend mine has been helping out at one of a family owned (not related to her just in the same neighbourhood she grew up in) grocery store near her place for about a year.

Started as a part timer when the shop owner’s family got covid and she offered to support so the shop doesn’t need to close when they were in quarantine.

She was recently offered a full time role. 6 days a week 8am – 4pm, 930pm to 10-30pm (to close the shop) after cpf will be around $1400.

I personally feel that it’s not a good offer but was told that she doesn’t need to pay for food/transport since it’s near home.

Just wanted to ask for opinions and see if I’m overreacting

Netizens’ comments

  1. Basically 8 hours a day (minus 1 hour lunch). The per hour rate will be 1400/192 = 7.291 SGD per hour.
It’s almost criminal to say the least.
  2. Bruh she can work part time with better wages
  3. Can she get a job that pays better, and that she wants?
Maybe higher pay but she doesn’t want to travel, or the job description doesn’t appeal to her?
If they’re paying her less than a random applicant because they know she lives nearby, then she should fight for the salary paid to other employees in the same role.
  4. Bruh I got paid that much 15 years ago when doing temp jobs.
  5. It really depensds on her job scope…. sounds like she is managing the whole shop? Maybe 7/11 would be better if that is the case…got better benefits. But then again if location is such a big factor to her and she don’t mind the pay then its up to her. This are the kind of jobs where its too low for most SGean. Then they will hire foreigners saying SGeans dont want to work.
  6. Other than the pay, it is a lifestyle that she is okay with? 6 days a week, knocking off at 4pm but eh not really because 930pm still need to clock in for another hour This is a 8am to 1030pm job with 6.5hours break (assume 1 hour lunch).
  7. That’s slave wages.
