13-MONTH-OLD S’PORE TODDLER DIES FROM COVID, 1ST COVID DEATH IN 2023 UNDER 12 YEARS OLD

In a somber turn of events, Singapore recorded its first COVID-19 death in a patient under the age of 12 this year. The victim, a 13-month-old boy, passed away on October 12, 2023, succumbing to acute COVID-19 infection, exacerbated by a congenital condition, as confirmed by the Ministry of Health (MOH), according to Channel NewsAsia.

The MOH revealed that the infant was unvaccinated for COVID-19 and carried a significant medical history of a congenital condition, already with a poor prognosis prior to contracting the virus.

The tragic timeline unfolded as the child tested positive for COVID-19 on October 10, 2023, leading to immediate hospitalization on the same day. Despite medical interventions, the young patient’s condition deteriorated, culminating in his unfortunate demise on October 12.

This marks a poignant moment for Singapore, as it grapples with the loss of a child to the virus. The MOH highlighted that this is the first COVID-19 death in a patient aged below 12 in the country for the year 2023. The previous year saw three children succumb to the virus, while there were no recorded deaths in children in 2020 or 2021.

In a statement, the MOH emphasized that, although the risk of severe COVID-19 in young children is generally lower than in older adults, severe outcomes can still occur, especially in those with underlying medical conditions who remain unvaccinated against COVID-19.

The Ministry urged individuals aged six months and above to ensure that their COVID-19 vaccination status is up to date, aligning with the prevailing recommendations.

In a move to enhance protection, Singapore updated its COVID-19 vaccine recommendations in October. Individuals aged six months and above are encouraged to receive an additional dose in 2023 or 2024, with eligibility determined about a year, and no earlier than five months, after their last shot.

To facilitate the vaccination process, the Joint Testing and Vaccination Centres have extended operating hours, providing accessible avenues for the community to stay vigilant against the virus.
