A 24-year-old Chinese woman has reportedly gone missing after travelling from Malaysia to Thailand, with her family now seeking help from the Chinese Embassy in Thailand.
The woman, identified as Qi Meng, had reportedly spent about a week in Kuala Lumpur before flying to Bangkok on 2 August.
According to information shared online by her friends, Qi boarded Malaysia Airlines flight MH784 from Kuala Lumpur at around 9am that morning. She subsequently arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok.
Her whereabouts became unknown after she allegedly accepted a ride from a stranger outside the airport.
Woman reportedly accepted ride to Chiang Mai
According to her friend Chen Ze, Qi was approached by an unidentified person after leaving the airport. The person allegedly offered to take her to Chiang Mai, claiming that they were heading in the same direction.
Qi reportedly accepted the offer and got into the vehicle.
She then stopped responding to calls and messages, leaving her friends and family unable to establish contact with her.
A missing-person appeal circulating online has since attracted considerable attention, with people sharing information in the hope of locating her.
The appeal also claimed that Qi’s family had become extremely worried after being unable to determine where she was. Some reports said her family had even required medical attention because of the stress surrounding her disappearance.
One of Qi’s friends reportedly said they would be willing to communicate with anyone who made a financial demand, with the main concern being Qi’s safe return.
However, many of the details circulating online have yet to be independently verified.
Chinese Embassy confirms family sought help
The Chinese Embassy in Thailand confirmed on 11 August that Qi’s family had approached the embassy over her disappearance.
The embassy said it had explained the procedures and requirements for reporting and handling such a case with the Thai authorities.
It also said it would continue providing necessary assistance to Qi’s family.
The confirmation from the embassy is currently one of the clearest official developments in the case.
However, there has been no confirmed information publicly establishing what happened to Qi after she left Suvarnabhumi Airport.
Online speculation remains unconfirmed
The case has prompted extensive discussion online, with several theories emerging about Qi’s possible whereabouts.
Some online users have questioned whether she may have travelled with someone she had only recently met. Other claims have also circulated regarding the location from which the missing-person appeal was posted.
One point that attracted attention was an apparent Cambodian IP location associated with an online appeal. However, this alone does not establish that Qi travelled to Cambodia or that anyone there was involved in her disappearance.
There have also been suggestions that the circumstances could be connected to criminal trafficking networks in the region. At this stage, however, there is no official confirmation linking Qi’s disappearance to such activity.
Authorities have yet to publicly confirm where Qi is, who she travelled with after leaving the airport, or why contact with her was lost.
For now, her family continues to seek information about her whereabouts while the relevant authorities look into the case.
