Two Thai university students have died following a traffic accident in Chiang Rai, while another student remains in hospital and the victim’s aunt is calling for a faster investigation.
The crash happened at about 8.24pm on Aug 25, when a red sedan collided with a motorcycle carrying three university students at a traffic-light junction. Police and rescue personnel were sent to the scene after receiving reports of the collision.
According to reports cited in the supplied source, the sedan allegedly struck the motorcycle from behind. Police are currently collecting evidence as they prepare for possible legal action.
Two Students Die After Collision
One of the victims was identified as 19-year-old Nichapa Phromtong, a first-year law student. She suffered serious injuries following the crash and later died.
The motorcycle’s rider, 18-year-old Alfarin Kaso, was also a first-year law student. She was taken to hospital following the accident but died on Aug 29, according to the report.
The third student, identified as 18-year-old Patchareeporn Nakornchan, was injured and remains under medical care, with her condition being monitored.
Police said a breathalyser test carried out on the driver on the night of the accident detected no alcohol. The driver also had valid motor vehicle insurance.
Police Gathering Evidence
Investigators reportedly reviewed CCTV footage from the junction. Police said the area had dim orange lighting, while footage appeared to show that the vehicle did not slow down before the collision.
However, the investigation had not been completed as of Aug 30. Police were still waiting for a forensic examination of the collision marks, along with additional autopsy reports.
A police superintendent said investigators would speed up their work and coordinate assistance for the injured student and the families of those who died.
The driver, described in reports as a doctor from a well-known hospital in Chiang Rai, has been accused by the victim’s aunt of running a red light and causing the collision. The allegation has not been established as a final finding.
Aunt Appeals For Justice
Nichapa’s aunt has publicly appealed for authorities to move quickly with the investigation, saying she had raised the teenager since childhood and was deeply affected by her death.
She also reportedly alleged that the doctor attended the funeral and said he had been unable to brake because the traffic light was changing from yellow to red. The aunt further claimed that he did not notice the motorcycle stopping at the junction before the collision.
The family has also asked that photographs and videos of the victim not be circulated online, with the aunt saying that seeing such material was extremely painful.
The university is reportedly arranging legal assistance for the case. Meanwhile, police are continuing to gather evidence before determining the next steps.
