MINISTER EDWIN TONG DISCHARGED AFTER SURGERY TO RELIEVE BLOCKED ARTERY IN HIS HEART

0

Singapore Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Edwin Tong, previously underwent a procedure to relieve a blocked artery in his heart, and has since been discharged from the hospital and resting at home.

He made the updated announcement on his Facebook page, where he shared that the incident has reminded him to “always count (his) blessings”.

Facebook update

This year, my 54th birthday is a reminder that I should always count my blessings, and there are many of them!

Happy to be home for my birthday and to celebrate at home with my family, along with a few visits from some of my oldest and dearest friends. Topped off with a cake from the office and some festive balloons from ex-colleagues too!

Thank you everyone for your birthday greetings and get well wishes. They are all greatly appreciated and deeply cherished

Previous Facebook post

Over the last few weeks, I have had to deal with a health issue.

As part of a routine health check, my doctors discovered that I had a blocked coronary artery, the Left Anterior Descending. This was significant because it is the main and largest artery supplying blood to the heart, and it was assessed to be severely blocked.

I am neither diabetic nor a smoker, have maintained pretty good cholesterol levels and definitely not sedentary when it comes to daily activities and exercise. So it was quite a shock for me to find out about the extent of the blockage and the risks which it put me under.

I discussed with the doctors and earlier this morning, I did an angiogram, which made the diagnosis clearer, followed by an angioplasty. The LAD was then stented to restore blood flow. Very grateful to my doctors and the nursing team – they are looking after me brilliantly.

I will now recuperate and take things a little slower for a bit before getting back to my usual routine. Will be working from home as much as possible in the meantime.

I have also had to cut down on some of my events and meetings over the last couple of days, on doctors’ orders not to exert myself too much.

I want to extend my apologies for missing various events, and to the event organisers as well, for any inconvenience caused.

Looking back, whilst I was perhaps feeling a little more tired from my regular routine than usual, I had put it down to the hustle and bustle of the schedule. I did not otherwise feel unwell. Nor did I experience any symptoms or discomfort at all, and I also don’t have any specific risk factors. So it’s fortunate that I managed to have this picked up in good time through a routine health check.

This episode is another reminder for us all to not take our health for granted – and to go for our regular health checks!

In the meantime, I will be spending this year’s National Day in hospital. Will have to be cheering the Red Lions and everyone else at NDP through the TV screen this year!

Happy National Day in advance!

PS : got a little get well soon bear from the family!

NOC’S RYAN TAN SAYS HE’D RATHER MARRY SYLVIA AGAIN THAN BE FAMOUS, NO FREEDOM

The glittering world of entertainment often casts a mesmerizing spell on those who aspire to fame. However, beneath the dazzling exterior lies a complex reality that many celebrities grapple with – the loss of privacy and the constraints on personal freedom.

Actor Maxi Lim and content creator Ryan Tan have shared candid insights into the challenges they face as public figures, shedding light on the sacrifices they’ve made for their careers.

Once beat up someone inside MRT

Maxi Lim, better known as Wayang King from the Ah Boys To Men movies, opened up about the dichotomy of fame on a recent episode of the Mandarin podcast/talkhow on YouTube, R U Okay.

He described fame as a “double-edged sword,” acknowledging the perks it brings but also lamenting the loss of privacy.

Lim recalled a time before his breakthrough role in “Ah Boys to Men” when he had the freedom to act without the scrutiny of the public eye.

He shared a poignant example of intervening in a situation where he felt compelled to help an elderly person who was being attacked by a drunk person, he admitted to beating up the latter inside the MRT.

Despite the noble intention, Lim acknowledged that such actions might be perceived differently now that he’s a recognized figure.

“Rather marry Sylvia again”

For Ryan Tan, the journey into fame was less deliberate. Formerly working behind the camera, the 35-year-old found himself thrust into the limelight when his talents and actors left and he had no choice but to appear in videos himself.

This unexpected change robbed him of the privacy he cherished, leaving him exposed to public scrutiny and relentless media attention. Tan regretfully admitted that he now lacks the freedom to act and react as he once did.

He said that he had no choice and was very uncomfortable being in front of the camera.

He stressed that he must carefully navigate his actions and emotions in public spaces to avoid misinterpretation.

The fear of potential misconstrual, coupled with the pressure of maintaining a certain image, places constraints on his behavior.

He shared a recent incident at the cinema when someone was talking very loudly during the movie, but he couldn’t tell the person off because of his status, and his girlfriend was advising him not to escalate the situation.

Most notably, on the question of fame, Tan said that he would rather his estranged ex-wife Sylvia Chan again than “do this” (becoming famous), because as the owner of a company, he has the responsibility to conduct himself properly in public to protect his employees.

28 Y.O S’POREAN MAN DIED FROM ALTITUDE SICKNESS WHILE CLIMBING MT KILIMANJARO

0

A 28-year-old Singaporean man, Darrel Phee Chin Ann, lost his life while attempting to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, according to a report by 8World News.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) confirmed the situation and said that they are providing consular assistance and support to the 28-year-old’s family, as well as extending their condolences to the family.

A Facebook post by Adventures Unlimited, a travel agency, captured the excitement of the moment, with a message inviting everyone to join in on the thrilling journey of conquering Africa’s highest peak.

Adventures Unlimited said in a statement that his oxygen levels dropped significantly on the morning of the summit hike, and his heart rate increased during the early hours of the ascent.

In adherence to safety protocols, a decision was made for him to descend back to the campsite, accompanied by a guide.

Despite returning to the campsite, Darrel’s condition continued to deteriorate rapidly. It was later revealed that he succumbed to asphyxiation and high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE), a severe altitude-related illness that occurs when fluid accumulates in the lungs, obstructing the efficient exchange of oxygen into the bloodstream.

Adventures Unlimited’s Facebook statement

We have received the sad news of a tragedy which had happened during the Kilimanjaro trek. One of our team members, Mr Darrel Phee, lost his life during the expedition.

Instances of fatalities on Mount Kilimanjaro are rare (<1%). However, there are instances where it could happen and this is attributed to various factors such as high altitude, extreme weather conditions, the climber’s physical condition and the physical challenges of the climb.

We have in place stringent safety measures, which include daily monitoring of oxygen levels, heart rate and symptoms. Darrel’s readings and symptoms have been normal throughout the days of the hike.

However, on the morning of the summit hike, his oxygen levels dropped and his heart rate increased. As per safety protocol, it was decided that he will abort the climb and descend with a guide.

At the campsite, he was closely monitored. Unfortunately due to the onset of altitude sickness and its serious health complications. his condition deteriorated and he passed away. The cause of death indicated – Asphyxia / HAPE

We express our sincere condolences for the tragic passing of Mr. Darrel Phee. This is a challenging period for Mr Phee’s family and our primary focus is on aiding the family in this difficult time.

AU remains committed to transparency and accountability to our participants. We hope that you can support us in this difficult time, understanding the spirit of adventure that drives us. as hikers, despite its inherent uncertainties.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro stands tall at an elevation of 5,895 meters, making it the highest peak in Africa. While the mountain attracts thrill-seekers and adventurers from around the world, it also poses formidable challenges.

The Climbing Kilimanjaro website noted that over half of climbers experience mountain sickness, showcasing the extreme conditions and altitude-related hurdles they face.

Fatal accidents on Mount Kilimanjaro are statistically rare, with a probability of less than 1 percent. Adventures Unlimited, the travel agency that organized the ill-fated expedition, highlighted the multifaceted nature of such incidents.

Factors such as extreme weather conditions, altitude, physical condition, and the inherent challenges of the climb can all contribute to unfortunate outcomes.

JAYWALKING E-BIKE RIDER GETS RAMMED OVER BY TRUCK @ UPPER SERANGOON

An accident took place at the junction of Serangoon Central and Upper Serangoon Road, involving a collision between an e-bike rider and an oncoming truck.

The Scene Unfolds: E-Bike Riders vs. Traffic Lights

The dashcam footage showed two e-bike cyclists, one dressed in blue and the other in white, navigating the road.

What sets this scene apart is the traffic signal, which displayed a glaring red hand, indicating a clear instruction for pedestrians and cyclists to halt.

Despite the glaring red signal, the e-bike riders continued their journey, crossing the road divider. As they moved ahead, the rider in white impulsively decided to overtake the rider in blue.

The rider in blue, displaying a sense of caution, slowed down as he reached the midpoint of the road, taking a look towards the left to check for any oncoming vehicles.

In stark contrast, the rider in white chose to ignore the need for caution and accelerated forward. As fate would have it, a yellow truck, moving at considerable speed, came hurtling towards the junction.

The yellow truck, with the right of way, collided with the e-bike. The collision was violent, knocking the rider off the e-bike and sending them crashing to the ground, with the e-bike turning into a mangled messy wreck on the road and the rider tossing around on the ground.

SELF-EMPLOYED MAN WANT TO BUY HDB SO WORK A FULL-TIME JOB FOR THE SAKE OF IT

0

I was told that as a self-employed person, it would be hard for me to secure any time of loan especially a housing loan that is typically higher compared to other types of loans such as car.

My friend is also self-employed and he makes over $100,000 a year but when he was going to take a loan for his HDB purchase, he was only granted a $110,000. This is not even enough to buy the toilets of a 4-room flat.

So i had no choice but to go work full time until my loan is secured.

It was a hard decision to make since i was already used to the freedom of being self-employed. I was able to do what i wanted and when i wanted. I was able to take my own time off and not worry about the consequences.

But i had to make the sacrifice to get what i wanted.

I started job hunting and it was not easy. I did not know where to start and what kind of job i should take. After a few months of searching, i finally secured a job. It was a 9 to 5 job and i was not used to it. I was used to sleeping in and being able to do things at my own time.

But i had to do it for my dream of owning a HDB.

The long hours, tight deadlines and the pressure to perform were all part of the job and it was a challenge for me to adapt. I had to learn to be disciplined and to prioritize my tasks. This was not the life i was used to but i was determined to make it happen.

I was also saving up for the downpayment for the HDB and cutting down on my expenses. I stopped eating out and going to the mall. I was also living in a shared room to save on rental.

It was a difficult period for me and there were days when i felt like giving up. I had to remind myself of my goal and why i was doing this.

Finally after a year of hard work, i was able to secure the loan for my HDB purchase. It was a proud moment for me and i was relieved that my hard work paid off.

MAN ADDICTED TO ONLINE SHOPPING, BOUGHT $5,000 OF TRASH A MONTH

0

It started off as a harmless hobby. I had always enjoyed the thrill of hunting for a bargain, so I decided to take my shopping online. Little did I know it would become an addiction.

At first, I would spend a few hours a week browsing the internet for the best deals and discounts. I was able to get some great items for a fraction of the original price. I was hooked.

Over time, my online shopping became an obsession. I would spend hours every day looking for the perfect items. I was buying anything and everything I could get my hands on and it didn’t matter if it was a good deal or not. I just wanted to buy stuff.

Before I knew it, I was spending hundreds of dollars a month on items that I didn’t need or even use. I had become an addict. I was buying things on impulse and not even looking at the prices. I was in a state of spending frenzy and I couldn’t stop.

One month, I went overboard and spent over $5,000 on items that were total trash. I had bought so many things that I had no use for and I was in complete shock when I saw the bill. I had gone way over my budget and I felt like a fool.

I was ashamed of my actions and I felt like I had let myself down. I had gone from being a smart shopper to a reckless spender in the blink of an eye. I had become addicted to online shopping and it had taken control of my life.

I tried to cut back but I couldn’t stop. I was addicted and I couldn’t break the habit. I had become so used to the thrill of buying things that I couldn’t resist the urge to keep shopping.

I knew I needed help but I didn’t know where to turn. I was embarrassed to admit my problem and I was afraid of what other people would think. I was in too deep and I couldn’t find a way out.

I wish I had taken the time to seek help before it was too late. I never learned my lesson and my addiction to online shopping is still going strong. I’m still buying things that I don’t need and spending way too much money.

I’ve tried to quit but it’s a never-ending battle. I’m still an addict and it doesn’t seem like I’ll ever break the habit. I just keep buying things and wasting my money on trash.

WOMAN ON FB OFFERS JOB WITHOUT CPF AS PRIVATE DRIVER IN SENTOSA

In the age of social media and online platforms, unique employment opportunities sometimes surface that raise eyebrows and questions. A recent posting on Facebook has ignited discussions and debates within the online community regarding a job offer that comes with a rather unconventional catch: no CPF contribution. The offer revolves around a private driver position within the opulent Sentosa neighbourhood, sparking conversations about the balance between financial decisions and legal obligations.

The Intriguing Offer

The post first appeared on Jobs in Singapore SG Facebook group.

The job ad roughly translates to:

“Private driver: $4,500 (PR/ Local)
Responsibilities: Arrive at the house at 7.30AM, send the kids to school and wait back at home. Pick up the kids in the afternoon and work ends.
Salary: 4500 (No CPF)
Off days: 4 a month
Location: Sentosa
Those who are interested please contact via Whatsapp………. Thank you.”

The Facebook post that has garnered attention centres around a woman offering a private driver position, catering exclusively to the residents of Sentosa. The peculiar aspect of this offer lies in the omission of CPF (Central Provident Fund) contributions, a mandatory savings scheme in Singapore designed to secure the financial future of citizens and permanent residents.

The Sentosa Lifestyle

Sentosa, often referred to as the “State of Fun,” is an island resort known for its luxurious residences, pristine beaches, and recreational amenities. Living on Sentosa is synonymous with affluence, as it is a prime destination for those who can afford a lavish lifestyle. Given this backdrop, the question arises: Why would a person residing in such opulence decide to forego CPF contributions for their private driver?

If the person is rich and staying in Sentosa still wants the be stingy on the CPF?

The allure of wealth and privilege can sometimes cloud financial decisions. The woman’s job offer, though unconventional, is a reflection of how individuals may prioritize immediate financial gains over long-term savings. Despite living in a high-end locality, some may choose to sidestep their CPF contributions, inadvertently impacting their retirement and social security net.

Legal Implications and Awareness

While the Facebook post itself doesn’t delve into legal aspects, it’s important to address the potential consequences of evading CPF contributions. The Ministry of Manpower in Singapore strictly mandates CPF contributions for employees, including those in private driver positions. Employers who fail to comply with CPF contributions can face serious legal repercussions, raising concerns about the woman’s offer and the unawareness of potential applicants.

MAN RELEASED FROM PRISON WANTS TO MEET HIS DAUGHTER, BUT EX-GF DENIES HIM

0

I had a daughter when I was 17, when she was 3 I was arrested and sent to prison. I was sentenced to 20 years but was released after 12. That was 8 months ago.

After I was convicted my then-girlfriend visited me every second week for a year. But then she stopped as she met someone new. I was happy for her, I didn’t want her to wait for me. I just asked her to stay in my daughter’s life.

After I was released I contacted her and asked if I could see my daughter. She said no. She said that she was afraid of me and didn’t want me to have contact with my daughter.

I know I was absent from their lifes for over a decade, I wasn’t there to be her father. But knowing that I’ll finally get to see my daughter when I get out was the only thing that gave me motivation to keep living. I don’t want to suddenly start being her dad again if she doesn’t want me to. I just want to be in her life, I just want her to know she has a dad.

I’ve been begging her for half a year and nothing. I want to be in her life. I don’t know what I can do to prove to my ex-girlfriend that I’m not a bad influence in their lifes. I think my daughter deserves to know the truth about me.

Here are what netizen thinks:

Are your parents alive and do they have a functioning relationship with your daughter

I do think you have to be mindful about the impact and lasting consequences of your behavior and de-center yourself here. Your desires are definitely not more important than a stable lifestyle for your daughter.

No matter what he did his ex has every right to be afraid of him because he went to prison that long. so I’m taking everything into consideration. And that’s the fact that she also has every right to tell him no, at least when the daughter is under 18.

RESIDENT @ CHOA CHU KANG CAN’T SLEEP BECAUSE PASAR MALAM DOWNSTAIRS NOISY

0

A resident in Choa Chu Kang has been complaining about being unable to sleep well because of the noise being generated by the claw machines at a pasar malam held about 10 metre away from his home on the 2nd floor of a HDB building.

Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, Mr. Yang, a 62-year-old resident living on the second floor of a nearby block, shared his plight and recounted how he had endured four consecutive nights of disrupted sleep due to the relentless music from the claw machines.

The continuous operation of these machines around the clock had left him weary and frustrated. Despite his efforts to address the issue with the operator, the noise persisted.

A Quest for Quiet

In a bid to find a resolution, Mr. Yang approached the operator and requested a reduction in volume. While the operator complied, the adjustment failed to quell the disruption effectively.

The clash between the vibrant entertainment and the tranquility of the night continued to disrupt his rest. Interestingly, not all residents shared the same sentiment, with some finding the situation tolerable after 9pm.

Deciphering the Noise

Upon investigation, Shin Min reporters visited the pasar malam and discovered a rather intriguing revelation.

Contrary to popular belief, the claw machines were not the primary source of the disturbance. Instead, the noise generated by the coin machines was identified as the main culprit, drowning out the music from the claw machines and creating a dissonant symphony of sound.

Seeking Solutions

Concerns escalated to the point where Brickland Constituency Office (BSO) stepped in to address the situation. In response to inquiries, a BSO spokesperson clarified that the operating hours for the claw machines were limited to 10.30pm.

Furthermore, the BSO representative engaged in a dialogue with the operator to ensure compliance with this regulation, aiming to restore peace and quiet to the neighborhood.

The pasar malam also stopped operating on 12 August.

@bricklandcares

Brickland's very first Pasar Malam is now open at Keat Hong Mirage 818, 818A and 818B until 12 Aug! 🌟 This is in conjunction with our upcoming National Day Carnival- Night of Dreams. NETIZENS CALL FOR HEFTIER PUNISHMENTS AGAINST ERRANT CYCLISTS

In recent times, the streets of Singapore have witnessed a growing concern among its netizens regarding the behavior of errant cyclists. These cyclists often assert their presence by occupying multiple lanes of the road, causing frustration and safety hazards for motorists and pedestrians alike. The surge in such incidents has prompted netizens to voice their demand for stricter penalties to curb this behavior.

Here are what netizens think:

  • Such a pest
  • This is thier father Road sad to see most are Adults but birds Brains

Netizens’ Call for Stricter Punishments

Social Media Outcry

Netizens have taken to social media platforms to share their experiences and frustrations about errant cyclists. The viral nature of such posts has sparked widespread discussions, garnering support for the need to address this issue urgently.

Perception of Safety

Some cyclists argue that they resort to occupying multiple lanes for their safety, especially when they feel endangered by close-passing vehicles. The fear of accidents and lack of protection often drive them to take up more space, exacerbating traffic congestion.

Occupying multiple lanes poses significant road safety risks. The behavior disrupts the predictability of traffic flow, increasing the chances of accidents and collisions. Vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and motorcyclists are particularly susceptible to harm in such scenarios.

Deterrence

Heavier penalties for errant cyclists could serve as a deterrent, discouraging them from engaging in behavior that disrupts traffic flow and endangers others. By implementing substantial fines and penalties, Singapore aims to create a safer road environment for all.

Promoting Responsible Cycling

Stricter punishments can help reinforce the importance of responsible cycling. Cyclists would be more inclined to follow traffic rules and exhibit considerate behavior, enhancing coexistence between cyclists and other road users.
