In an island-wide anti-scam enforcement operation conducted from 30 to 31 May 2023, the Police arrested three men, aged between 20 and 50 for their suspected involvement in perpetrating scams.

Another 15 men and seven women, aged between 26 and 65 are also assisting with investigations.

Since March 2023, the Police observed that Singpass credentials were misused to open corporate bank accounts online. Investigations indicated that these corporate account holders had relinquished their Singpass credentials and passwords to the scam syndicates to register companies and open corporate bank accounts, which served as conduits to receive funds from victims of investment scams and job scams.

During the two-day island-wide operation, officers from the Commercial Affairs Department and seven Land Divisions arrested three individuals and hauled up 22 others for investigations.

30 bank accounts were frozen for investigations, and more than $189,000 in scam proceeds were seized.

Preliminary investigations revealed that they had allegedly facilitated criminal activities by selling their bank accounts and or relinquishing their Singpass credentials to scam syndicates to create new bank accounts, and in some cases, for returns as much as $700 for each bank account sold.

Some are also believed to have rented their bank accounts to scammers or assisted them with bank transfers and withdrawals for monetary benefits. Police investigations are ongoing.

The Police take a serious view of these offences and will not hesitate to take action against individuals who may be involved in scams, and perpetrators will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

To avoid being an accomplice to the crime, members of the public should always reject seemingly attractive money-making opportunities promising pay-outs for the use of their Singpass account, or bank accounts or allow their personal bank account to be used to receive and transfer money for others.

The Police would like to remind members of the public that individuals will be held accountable if they are found to be linked to such crimes.

WOMAN TOLD NOT TO PLAY WITH MONKEYS BUT SHE STILL DID IT, END UP KENA BITTEN

A pair of Canadian tourists experienced a troubling incident during their visit to the well-known Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary in Bali.

Despite repeated warnings to maintain a safe distance from the monkeys, one of the tourists disregarded the advice and ended up being bitten.

The incident was captured on video and shared on TikTok by Ms. Molly McMurray. The footage depicts Ms. Erica Mussini sitting on a step at the Monkey Forest in Ubud, engaging with two monkeys positioned nearby. Suddenly, a larger monkey from behind rushes towards her and bites her forearm.

Ms. McMurray later updated her TikTok followers in a subsequent post, explaining that they promptly sought medical assistance at a local clinic. Ms. Mussini received six injections and would undergo further medical examinations upon their return to Canada.

@molly__xoxo_ update monkey bite: we went to the clinic, 6 injections later she’s fine. We have to go back in a week and as soon as we return to Canada. She also has to take several medications a day. All this to prevent in case it would be more serious. 🫶🏼. #monkeyforestbali #monkeybites ♬ Don't Worry Be Happy – Bobby McFerrin

Other similar incidents

Another incident involving a monkey bite at the same attraction was documented on TikTok in March by Nicole Chen, a well-known content creator from Singapore, also known as Nicole Liel.

According to Ms. Chen, one of her travel companions had been “interacting with the monkeys… and petting them” when one of the monkeys bit her friend.

Upon returning to Singapore, her friend’s foot swelled due to the bite, necessitating ten rabies prevention injections as a precautionary measure.

The Monkey Forest’s website includes guidelines for visitors, emphasizing that physical contact or playing with the monkeys should be avoided to prevent potential bites.

In case of a monkey bite, visitors are advised to seek assistance at the Monkey Forest’s first-aid clinic, where clinic staff will provide wound cleaning with alcohol and antiseptic cream.

The website assures visitors that the monkeys within the sanctuary are not rabid and that their health is regularly monitored by researchers from the Primate Research Centre of Udayana University, located in Bali. Visitors are further reminded not to bring food or feed the monkeys during their visit to the attraction.

BOSS GAVE $50 INCREMENT TO WORKER WITH $2.5K SALARY, “GO DRIVE GRAB SUA”

0

It’s been two years since I started working at my current job. Over the past two years, I’ve worked hard, putting in long hours and going above and beyond to ensure that I was meeting my boss’s expectations.

However, despite my best efforts, I was never given a pay raise. It was a crushing blow to my morale, and I slowly started to lose my motivation. This week, my boss finally told me that he was going to give me a pay raise. But instead of the long-overdue pay bump I was expecting, the raise he offered me was a mere $50.

It felt like an insult.

After two years of hard work and dedication, I was only being offered a measly $50. It felt like nothing more than a slap in the face.

At that moment, I knew I couldn’t stay at this job any longer. I decided that it was time to start looking for a new job, one that would actually reward me for my hard work. Then I remembered something my friend had told me about driving for Grab. He said that Grab drivers easily earn over $3,000 a month after expenses.

That’s when I decided to quit my job and start driving for Grab. I knew that it wouldn’t be easy, but I was determined to make it work. I set up an account with Grab and spent the next few days learning the ropes and setting up my car.

The first few days were tough. I was constantly getting lost and had to rely on GPS to get me to my destinations. But after a week or so, I started to get the hang of it. I made sure to update my profile regularly to show potential customers that I was reliable and trustworthy.

I also made it a point to be friendly and courteous to my customers. I would make small talk with them, offer them snacks and water, and make sure they had an enjoyable ride.

After a while, I started to get repeat customers and even earned some great reviews.

Today, it’s been two months since I started driving for Grab and I’m already making more money than I ever did at my old job. My customers love me, and I love the flexibility that comes with driving for Grab. I never thought I’d be able to make a living this way, but I’m so glad I took the chance.

Although sometimes there are some unruly Grab passengers I rather earn more.

Mummies school group chat

Hi all, pls don’t bombard this stressed out mummy here.

My presch girl is 5 and one parent set up a grp chat for their class.

I feel that these group are very toxic and some mummies are really so annoying. It became a group for her to flaunt her connections and social status etc.

For social norms reason, I can’t just quit the group as we would often see each other when we fetch and drop off the kids.

Somemore I’m a pretty busy mum and I sort of relies of this group for school updates and reminders.

One incident last year really piss me off as she uses scarasm on another mummy for getting the privilege to go out with the class outings.

Why can’t people be nice to each other.

Here are what netizens think:

  • Just mute the group read only when you feel like it
  • Mute and ignore… read when you have time. Scroll by if you see anything toxic or not nice. Why you feel so stress out when they are not talking about you and neither it’s your problem?
  • Lol well it’s always a choice. Just leave the group and have have the school update you on the activities. Done ! This is not a high tea club or THe real house wives of Singapore.
  • Anyone else in the chat friends with her? If not, just set up another group and add all other parents in except her.
  • Yes, mute and ignore. When facing this kind of parent or even friend, you just need to put up a mask!!! No choice, this is life… unless you don’t want to survive!
  • Your encounter is normal. Once you have identified a few similar parents (like yourself), you can create another separate group of your own benefits. Can just silence the other group and ignore irrelevant comments / suggestions.

MAN DEPOSITED MONEY AT UOB ATM BUT CASH KENA MAKAN BY MACHINE @ YISHUN NORTHPOINT

0

In a recent incident at Yishun Northpoint, a customer expressed frustration on social media after encountering issues with a deposit machine. The customer claimed that the machine had “eaten” his money and displayed an error message for only a few seconds before disappearing. The individual’s attempts to contact the customer service hotline resulted in a lengthy 25-minute wait before speaking with a representative.

According to the customer, the hotline operator assured them that a claim would be submitted, and the funds would be refunded within three working days. However, the customer raised a valid concern regarding potential late payment fees and interest charges for other banks’ credit card payments due the following day. When seeking clarification on whether the bank would assume responsibility for such charges, the hotline operator was unable to provide a definitive answer.

The customer also questioned whether the bank should have personnel readily available to address issues promptly in the event of machine malfunctions. While acknowledging that such incidents are infrequent, the customer found it unacceptable for their funds to be delayed by three days.

The incident occurred at a deposit machine situated in Yishun Northpoint. The affected individual expressed the hope of recovering the deposited money promptly and raised concerns about potential discrepancies in the refunded amount.

Here is what he said

The deposit machine eat my cash! No recipe come out. The error message flash like just few seconds I didn’t even managed to take a photo of it.

I spent 25mins in front of the machine trying to call the hotline ….. Yes.. 25minutes… And the person in the phone told me he will submit a claim for me… The money will be in within 3 working days. I ask him if tomorrow I have other banks credit card to be paid and I didn’t pay on time and was charged late payment fees and interest etc will UOB be responsible for it? The answer is I cannot tell you that …

Shouldnt UOB people have someone standby if the machine have problem the person will go to the scene asap?

I know machine problem is rare. But it’s real and happening! I cannot accept my money to reach me 3 days later too!

Anyway, the machine is located at Yishun Northpoint. I hope I can get back my money and if it’s not the right amount what can I do???

DATING OVER 30: MAN UNSURE IF HOW HE SHOULD TALK TO HIS NEW DATE

0

Hey hey, so long story short, I just found out some woman that I used to be “talking” to, is single for the first time in a while, and so I decided to slide into her DMs and just ask if she would be interested in going on a date – and she said yes! But now where it gets tricky, is that she’s out of town for the next ~10 days on business, and I’m not sure what the contact etiquette should be.

We’ve hardly spoken in the past 10 years, so we’re basically starting from scratch.

If you were me, would it be wiser to just wait until she gets back to town to start contacting, so I’m not hitting her up and trying to get to re-know her via text? I feel like I should be reaching out at least every other day so that I stay in front of mind, but that sounds like my own issues getting in the way of looking like a functioning adult…

Anyway, any advice is appreciated.

Here are what netizens think:

  • If she’s out of town, I wouldn’t bother her too much. Maybe once to let her know you hope she’s enjoying her time away (but nothing that she would feel obligated to respond to) and the day or so around the time she gets back so you can confirm plans. Any more than that, and it sends a signal that you’re on the fast track to becoming obsessed. Especially if she’s newly single.
  • Don’t do every other day. Maybe once at the mid-way point and again when you know she’s back to confirm plans.
  • If I were the woman in this situation, I would like getting a text or two while I was away. It would feel nice to casually chat before the date a little bit. I personally find it a little odd when someone sets a date and then goes completely radio silent until the date, especially if it’s many days or a week+ away. This is personal preference though! You can gauge how she feels by how she responds. If she’s super engaged, maybe that’s an opening for a little more texting. If she’s terse and takes a long time to reply, she’s probably busy and/or isn’t into talking a lot before the date

AL PACINO 83 Y.O ALREADY BUT KKJ STILL CAN STAND, 29 Y.O GF 8-MONTHS PREGNANT

Veteran Hollywood actor Al Pacino is expecting to become a father once again, at the ripe old age of 83.

According to the popular entertainment portal TMZ, the news of Pacino’s girlfriend, Noor Alfallah, a 29-year-old Kuwaiti-American movie producer, being eight months pregnant was revealed on Tuesday.

Pacino’s representative has since confirmed the pregnancy.

Pacino, known for his iconic roles in movies like The Godfather series (1972, 1974, and 1990) and Scent Of A Woman (1992), has been romantically linked to Ms. Alfallah since April 2022 when they were spotted together in public. Reports suggest that they became a couple during the pandemic.

Previously, Alfallah had been in relationships with Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, 79, and German-American billionaire Nicolas Berggruen, 61.

Pacino, who has three adult children from previous relationships, namely daughter Julie Marie, 33, and 22-year-old twins Anton and Olivia, has spoken about the significance of fatherhood in his life. In a 2014 interview with The New Yorker, he expressed his desire to be present for his children, as his own father had left him and his mother when he was a young child.

He said, “I was consciously aware that I didn’t want to be like my dad. I wanted to be there. I have three children. I have a responsibility towards them. I am an integral part of their lives. It upsets me and them when I am not present.”

Pacino further stated, “Being a father gives me immense fulfillment. It takes me out of my own world. When I finish a movie and return, I feel a sense of shock for the first 20 minutes. People are asking things of me? Huh? I’m not the center of attention? Wait a minute. Uh-oh, it’s about them. That sense of fulfillment is satisfying. I enjoy it.”

In related news, Pacino’s close friend and fellow actor, Robert De Niro, 79, made headlines in May after revealing that he had recently become a father for the seventh time.

40 Y.O MAN ATTACKED BY WILD BOAR @ BUKIT PANJANG, END UP NEED MORE THAN 40 STITCHES

0

A 40-year-old man in Singapore is currently receiving medical treatment in a hospital after being bitten by a wild boar at Zhenghua Park in Bukit Panjang, according to a report by Mothership.

The incident occurred on Thursday evening (June 1) around 8:45 PM while the man, referred to as JL, was taking a walk with his dogs. According to JL, the wild boar suddenly emerged and approached him aggressively, contrary to their typically evasive behavior.

During the encounter, the wild boar bit into JL’s left leg. However, one of his dogs managed to fend off the boar before chasing it away.

Despite his injury, JL was able to run a distance of approximately 20 to 30 meters while calling out for his dog. However, his leg injuries gradually became too much for him to continue, ultimately forcing him to stop.

Due to him living close to the park, JL’s wife was able to drive him to the hospital promptly. Following the incident, he underwent surgery at 2 AM on June 2, where his left leg required more than 20 stitches.

JL is currently under observation in the hospital and has been granted a medical leave of four to six weeks.

In the aftermath of the incident, JL expressed his shock and emphasized that he and his dogs did not provoke the attack.

He expressed gratitude that his dog remained unharmed and mentioned the potential dangers if his 17-month-old daughter had been present during the attack.

Despite his experience, JL conveyed that he considers himself fortunate that his dog protected him, as the boar’s forceful bite could have caused serious harm or even killed the dog.

JL acknowledged that wild boars are frequently seen in the area and generally pose no threat. Despite his personal encounter, he expressed his wish for the well-being of the wild boar involved.

Rather than advocating for its capture and euthanasia, he hoped that the boar could be relocated, as has been done in similar incidents in the past.

SHIPPING COMPANY GIVING STAFF 30-MTHS SALARY BONUS, EACH STAFF GETTING $59K

0

Taiwanese shipping company Yang Ming is generously providing a bonus equivalent to up to 30 months’ salary to its fortunate staff members.

According to a report by Bloomberg, Yang Ming Marine Transport is set to distribute this substantial bonus to its employees on their upcoming payday. Shareholders approved this exceptional bonus, amounting to approximately NT$2.3 billion (equivalent to S$101 million) in costs for the company, as reported by the Economic Daily News.

Based on information from the Taipei Times, the average bonus for each Yang Ming staff member will amount to around NT$1.34 million (equivalent to S$58,800). Notably, this significant bonus is in addition to the 12-month year-end bonus that was awarded to employees earlier this year.

These bonuses are being disbursed in accordance with the company’s charter, which mandates the allocation of at least 1% of its profits as mid-year bonuses to staff members. The exact payout amount per employee is determined at the company’s discretion, while their average monthly salary stands at NT$50,000 (equivalent to S$2,200).

In March, Yang Ming announced a record after-tax profit of NT$180.6 billion (equivalent to S$7.93 billion) for 2022, along with a record high consolidated sales of NT$375.9 billion (equivalent to S$16.5 billion). These exceptional financial results were driven by robust demand and elevated average freight rates in the container shipping market, a trend seen across global shipping firms during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In contrast, Evergreen Marine, Yang Ming’s Taiwanese competitor, plans to distribute a comparatively modest mid-year bonus equivalent to approximately 12 months’ salary to its employees. This bonus will cost Evergreen Marine approximately NT$1.918 billion (equivalent to S$84.1 million). The company reported a record after-tax profit of NT$334.2 billion (equivalent to S$14.7 billion) for 2022.

Despite the current prosperity, shipping companies anticipate a downturn in the industry’s fortunes. Yang Ming highlighted that purchasing power has been reduced due to inflation and high inventory levels since the fourth quarter of 2022. Analysts predict a staggering 99% decline in Yang Ming’s profit to NT$2.2 billion (equivalent to S$96.5 million) and a 94% drop in Evergreen’s net income to NT$18.6 billion (equivalent to S$816 million).

Evergreen’s President, Eric Hsieh, stated to the Taipei Times that the global shipping industry may experience a decline in the first quarter (1Q) but expects a rebound in the second quarter (2Q).
