Question regarding full time jobs

Hello! A friend mine has been helping out at one of a family owned (not related to her just in the same neighbourhood she grew up in) grocery store near her place for about a year.

Started as a part timer when the shop owner’s family got covid and she offered to support so the shop doesn’t need to close when they were in quarantine.

She was recently offered a full time role. 6 days a week 8am – 4pm, 930pm to 10-30pm (to close the shop) after cpf will be around $1400.

I personally feel that it’s not a good offer but was told that she doesn’t need to pay for food/transport since it’s near home.

Just wanted to ask for opinions and see if I’m overreacting

Netizens’ comments

  1. Basically 8 hours a day (minus 1 hour lunch). The per hour rate will be 1400/192 = 7.291 SGD per hour.
It’s almost criminal to say the least.
  2. Bruh she can work part time with better wages
  3. Can she get a job that pays better, and that she wants?
Maybe higher pay but she doesn’t want to travel, or the job description doesn’t appeal to her?
If they’re paying her less than a random applicant because they know she lives nearby, then she should fight for the salary paid to other employees in the same role.
  4. Bruh I got paid that much 15 years ago when doing temp jobs.
  5. It really depensds on her job scope…. sounds like she is managing the whole shop? Maybe 7/11 would be better if that is the case…got better benefits. But then again if location is such a big factor to her and she don’t mind the pay then its up to her. This are the kind of jobs where its too low for most SGean. Then they will hire foreigners saying SGeans dont want to work.
  6. Other than the pay, it is a lifestyle that she is okay with? 6 days a week, knocking off at 4pm but eh not really because 930pm still need to clock in for another hour This is a 8am to 1030pm job with 6.5hours break (assume 1 hour lunch).
  7. That’s slave wages.

MAN WFH UNTIL TOO SHIOK, DO A BIT OF WORK THEN NAP OR PLAY GAMES WHEN WORKING

0

Unmotivated to do work

This is a rant about myself and my current job here.

Ever since WFH started, I’ve felt pretty unmotivated on most days to do work. I would log in late to work on some days and just do some work each day, watching YouTube videos or playing a game every once in awhile, or taking short naps if I’m WFH.

A while ago, I switched teams and the new department has a way different work culture from the previous one, being very driven on KPIs and micromanagey. Being new to the role my colleagues and seniors tell me to put in more effort in trying to understand the work, and that’s had the opposite effect on me.

Recently I’ve felt even less motivated, completely shutting off from daily emails and I find myself doing everything else I can to procrastinate. The thought of doing work that my managers would find is subpar anyway makes me want to shut off completely from work.

I’ve thought about quitting, because it’s not fair to my colleagues that they have deadweight in the form of me, but I have loans to pay. I am considering looking for a new role just to get away from this team that I simply can’t click with, while admitting privately to myself that I have really poor work ethics. I don’t think I’m depressed/burnt out either, because I’m happy to do anything else but work and I haven’t exactly done a lot of work to be burnt out. I toy with the idea of quitting and just booking myself a long trip to somewhere and chilling for a month before coming back to laze around at home.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk. Has anyone else felt like this before and have you managed to get out of this slum?

Netizens’ comments

  1. Sounds like WFH too comfortable for you. Not everybody is suited for WFH with minimal guidance/direction.
  2. I completely empathize. Some WFH days I just want to sleep in and laze. But in the grander scheme of things, it’s perhaps a sentiment similar to dread, lack of purpose or even jadedness.
Figure out what exactly motivates you and drives your attention, then try to set personal goals aligned to these motivations and innate drive. Now don’t get me wrong, just because you do doesn’t mean you’d feel the occasional lacklustre to accomplish things. It just helps your little wheel of motivation turning. In my experience, that is good enough
  3. Everyone faces all these temptation to not work. If you still need a job, I suggest you force yourself to go into office for work to get a sense of discipline. Add motivators like setting up dinner and lunch with friends.
Alternatively, maybe just set yourself 1 simple task to complete a day. Often there is dread when everything feels like they need to be done today and you are very perfectionistic about things.
Do your task then give yourself the break to chill and nap. Over time you get more ability to manage the work demands and can pull more weight

25 Y.O MAN ARMED WITH AXE ARRESTED BY POLICE AFTER FIGHT @ STAMFORD RD, 71 Y.O SENT TO HOSPITAL

A video emerged on YouTube showing a man armed with an axe, walking across the road and swinging it while approaching a couple of police officers at a traffic junction.

The man was apparently involved in a fight that resulted in another man being sent to the hospital, and he was subsequently arrested.

The netizen who posted the video, captioned it: ” (SIC) Armed man on the road with an axe swinging around and was stopped by a police patrol. Police aiming with a taser to stop the armed man”

The video, which was captured on the dashcam of a passing car, was posted earlier today (11 April) and showed two police officers disembarking from their parked car in front of the traffic junction along Stamford Road, as they appeared to have noticed something or someone from a distance.

A man armed with an axe was then seen crossing the road and approaching the two police officers, who said something to the suspect before drawing their weapons and aiming them at him.

The “axe-man” then dropped his axe onto the ground before raising his hands to surrender, standing still in front of the police officers until the traffic light turned green and the camcar then drove off, ending the video in the process.

The Singapore Police Force added that the 25-year-old “axe-man” had been involved in a fight as well, prior to his arrest by officers.

The police were alerted to a fight along Stamford Road at about 2.28 am, and the man was subsequently arrested for possession of an offensive weapon, use of criminal force to deter a public servant from the discharge of his duty, as well as using insulting language on a public servant.

Another 29-year-old man is assisting the police with their investigations, and a 71-year-old was also sent to the hospital conscious, with an axe also being seized.

At the time of writing, police investigations into the incident are currently ongoing.

MAN’S JB HOTEL ROOM DOOR CAN BE OPENED WITHOUT KEY, SPENT WHOLE NIGHT ON HIGH ALERT

0

TikTok user Lawrens Tan, shared how he travelled to Johor Bahru during a recent trip and stayed at the KSL Hotel and Resort, but things soon turned awry for him.

Upon checking into his hotel room, he soon found out that his hotel room door could be easily opened by other people without a key card.

He documented the whole incident and demonstrated how anyone could enter his hotel room by simply turning the handle of the door.

Tan said that he later informed the hotel staff about the problem but nobody came to help him fix the door or get him another room, with only a staff member coming up and briefly assessing the door.

He was afraid of intruders and spent the entire night watching over the door to make sure nobody unwelcome came into his room by handing a bunch of hangers on the door’s safety latch to secure the door.

He captioned his video:

“WHAT A BAD HORROR STORY STAYING AT KSL JB HOTEL.
You do not need a key card. Just turn the knob and you can go in already and they said it’s a deluxe room.

Highlighted the issue immediately to the reception and all we got is find him then he said find another one. So no one came to rectify the entire night.

We had to really try and use hangers as a safety precaution but of course had to be on alert the entire night. This is the 1st time we encountered this and hope it doesn’t happen to anyone.

I honestly think I will think twice again for this hotel.”

WOMAN BOOKED GRAB & DRIVER BROUGHT A “ASSISTANT” ALONG, PAX’S FRIEND HAD TO TAKE SEPARATE GRAB

0

A Facebook user shared how she had booked 9-seater Grab Coach for herself and her companions for $60, before asking the driver if she could ass two more pick up points to pick up the other passengers.

The driver told her that each pickup point would be $10, and the netizen agreed, before asking the driver if the final price is $60 (the original booking fare) + $20 (the price of the 2 additional pick-up points).

However, the driver didn’t reply her.

On the day of the pickup, she was surprised that the driver brought an additional “assistant” along with him and as a result, one of the woman’s friends had to take a separate grab to the airport by himself.

At the end of the journey, the driver charged them an additional $10 instead of the $20 for the 2 additional pick-up points, saying that it was because their luggage was “overweight”.

Here is what she said (SIC)

I wish to make a complain of this uncle who drives a nine-seater van.

I originally booked this vehicle on grab from the hotel to the airport for a total of $60 (as you can see from the transaction records).

I asked him if he could add two more points to pick up people, and he also said that one point was $10, which I also accepted,

so I asked him if it was 60+20=$80. He didn’t reply my messages, and I suspect it was on purpose (please refer to the conversation screenshot attached).

When came to that day, to my surprise, there were actually two “drivers”, one driver’s assistant took up a seat, which made us not enough seats,

and I have to get one passenger to travel to the airport via another vehicle himself.

This is not the end! At the destination, the driver charged us $30. Why was there an extra ten dollars?

He said it was because our luggage was overweight. The uncle should have asked for the total number of passengers, pieces of luggage, and explain all the hidden charges in advance, but he instead charge more money to his liking, which is deceitful.

I obviously booked a nine-seater, and without the driver there should be eight seats. This is a horrific experience and is indeed a malicious intent by the driver to earn extra cash. This is an extremely unsatisfactory ride and I call upon Grab to look into this matter.

FORMER “UNDER ONE ROOF” ACTOR RICHARD NG DIES AGED 83, DOCTORS TRIED REVIVING HIM BUT FAILED

0

83-year-old former Hong Kong actor, Richard Ng, who is most well known by Singaporeans for his portrayal of Uncle Bobby in the 90s sitcom Under One Roof, passed away in a hospital on Sunday (9 April).

He had suffered from severe kidney failure and had been on kidney dialysis every day for a few years before his passing on Sunday.

The actor had stopped working in 2019 because of his health problems, and his family has also requested for privacy during this period as they grieve.

HK01 reported that they received a tip-off from a messaging group that confirmed that Ng’s family had received a doctor’s note about the actor’s looming death.

The family then went to the hospital where Ng was receiving treatment to visit him for the last time, praying for him as he remained intubated.

His heart then stopped at one point, and doctors tried to resuscitate him but to no avail, before confirming his death later.

Ng told the Hong Kong media back in 2019 that he had stopped working because he had severe kidney failure and was left with about 10% of his kidney functions. He also suffered hearing hoss and was initially reluctant to wear hearing aids in both his ears.

Upon his death, Ng leaves behind his wife and 4 children.

Legend

Richard Ng is a Hong Kong actor who has become one of the most recognizable faces in the Hong Kong entertainment industry. Born on December 17, 1939, in Guangzhou, China, Richard grew up in Hong Kong and began his acting career in the 1970s. He has since appeared in over 200 films and TV shows, and has become a household name in Hong Kong and beyond.

Ng’s career began in the theater, where he honed his acting skills before transitioning to the film industry. He made his film debut in the 1976 movie “Money Crazy,” and quickly became a popular character actor, known for his comedic timing and ability to bring levity to any scene. He often played supporting roles, but his performances were always memorable and left an impression on audiences.

One of Ng’s most famous roles was in the 1984 comedy film “Aces Go Places III: Our Man from Bond Street,” in which he played the bumbling detective, Fatso. The film was a box office success and spawned several sequels, solidifying Ng’s place as a comedic talent in the Hong Kong film industry.

Ng has also appeared in several TV shows, including the popular 1990s sitcom “Virtues of Harmony,” in which he played the character of “Uncle Pong.” The show was a huge success and ran for over 300 episodes, further cementing Ng’s status as a beloved actor in Hong Kong.

Throughout his career, Ng has won numerous awards and accolades for his performances, including a Hong Kong Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the 1987 film “People’s Hero,” and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Hong Kong International Film Festival in 2018.

In addition to his work in film and television, Ng is also a successful businessman, having founded the restaurant chain, “Richard’s Corner,” which specializes in Hong Kong-style cuisine. 14 Y.O XMM SENT TO GIRLS’ HOME FOR THEFT, SMOKING, VAPING, DRINKING ETC – OUT OF CONTROL

0

A 14-year-old girl in Singapore, identified as “Ella” in court documents, pleaded guilty to 4 charges that included cheating and theft, as well as participating in risky behaviour such as drinking, vaping and engaging in obscene behaviour.

Her parents were found by the judge to be inconsistent in their parenting methods and deemed them not fit to supervise the girl’s rehabilitation, and she was sentenced on 6 April by a youth court to 21 months in the Singapore Girls’ Home – 5 other charges were considered during her sentencing.

According to a report by Channel NewsAsia, Ella had pleaded guilty to 4 charges including stealing cosmetic products from Watsons, and scamming other people on Carousell by posting listings but not delivering the goods.

She was also part of a group that attacked someone with a knuckle duster.

Her parents had contacted the Singapore Children’s Society back on 24 February last year, applying for the pre-Family Guidance Order (FGO) regime after she had broken a number of laws.

The organisation screened the 14-year-old girl and found that she had engaged in a few risky behaviours that included:

  1. Underaged smoking and vaping
  2. Consuming alcohol
  3. Obscene behaviour
  4. Associating with negative influences
  5. Staying away from home
  6. Going home late

The organisation found that Ella’s parents were inconsistent in their parenting, with the mother being open to professional advice and making an effort to impose discipline and routine on the girl, while the father was often switching between being strict and permissive.

The family was subsequently referred to another social service agency for therapy sessions but the girl failed to show up thrice without valid reasons.

She was also not interested in working on her studies and associated with the negative influences in her life because she placed more emphasis on having fun instead, straying away from her home for up to a week.

At the time, her parents were also going through a divorce, resulting in increased difficulties in managing their out-of-hand daughter.

The father also suddenly decided against applying for the FGO because Ella promised to go to school and abide by the curfew, but failed to keep her promises, with her behaviour getting worse instead – she allegedly posted photos of herself with love bites and tried to find a sugar daddy online.

Ella was charged in August 2022 and her mother posted bail for her before withdrawing herself as the bailor less than a month later, decided instead to send her to the Girls’ Home after she found 50 canisters of butane gas in her room.

Her father then posted bail for her instead and enabled Ella to go back to her old ways, with the mother later finding even more butane gas in her room.

She was then remanded at the Girls’ Home after having her bail nullified by the court in October 2022 but gave her another chance to be bailed out with a higher bail amount, provided she followed the stricter curfew hours.

However, she breached the bail conditions once again and ran away from home.

The judge noted that Ella had been referred to CPS 6 times last year and was a victim of dating violence while dating her ex-boyfriend, and she was also physically punished at home, where her father was seen on CCTV pulling her hair, kicking her stomach, slapping and cursing at her.

The mother then applied for a personal protection order and domestic exclusion, with proceedings for those applications still ongoing.

The father appealed against his daughter’s sentence to the Girls’ Home and asked for probation instead, saying that he will supervise her and chaperone her personally to and from school; however, it was rejected by the court, with the judge noting that Ella was non-receptive to community-based programmes.

MAN IN WHEELCHAIR STUCK ROLLING ON THE ROAD @ NOVENA, KIND DRIVER STOPS TO HELP HIM

0

A man in a wheelchair was seen rolling backwards on the road under the rain along Novena and calling out for help, when a driver stopped his car and alighted to help the poor man out.

A netizen on TikTok, @tdn_dennis shared a video of the heartwarming sight that happened in Novena about a week ago, showing the wheelchair bound man rolling down the road backwards with his feet.

He was seen with a few plastic bags and items hanging off his wheelchair, and was gesturing by raising his arm in the air and calling out for help.

And although the road wasn’t busy at the time, vehicles were still wheezing past the wheelchair user, who was in a pretty precarious situation.

In the next part of the video, the driver of a white car then stopped his vehicle a short distance ahead of the wheelchair user beside a bus stop, before alighting from his vehicle.

He then alighted from his car and went forwards to help the man on the wheelchair, helping to push him towards his car.

Some netizens commended the driver for helping the man, although others commented that they have chanced upon the wheelchair bound man before, who allegedly asked them for money.

MUM BUYS MERCEDES FOR 5 Y.O DAUGHTER AS B’DAY GIFT, HOPE SHE WORKS HARD IN SCHOOL

A 5-year-old girl in Malaysia received a Mercedes G Wagon worth about RM1.79 million (or SGD$542,315.76) for her birthday, in the hopes that the expensive birthday present will spur her on to work hard in school.

The girl’s mother, Malaysian businesswoman Farhana Zahra, posted a video of the birthday surprise on her TikTok page on 9 April during her daughter’s birthday celebration.

She captioned her video and wished her daughter, Fatima, a happy 5th birthday, and was seen in the video leading her blindfolded daughter along with her husband to the front of the house, where the surprise waits.

Right outside the house was a white coloured Mercedes G Wagon encased inside a transparent trailer surrounded by blue coloured balloons.

The mother then removed her daughter’s blindfold and the girl was happily surprised when she saw her extravagant surprise.

The license plate of the car was also seen with the girl’s full name on it, with the mother writing in her video that she hopes her daughter will work hard in school and be diligent after receiving her present.

She also hoped that her daughter, who harbours dreams of becoming a doctor one day, will achieve her dreams when she grows up.

Farhana said that her daughter was so happy with her new half a million dollars car that she couldn’t stop holding on to the key, even though she can’t drive the car herself yet.

The latest video comes in the heels of another video that Farhana posted back on 31 March where she asked her daughter what she wanted for her birthday.

The girl then told her that she wanted a BMW or a G Wagon, and the mother then promised to buy her one of she agrees to go to school, before locking in the promise with their pinkies.

19 Y.O WHO SAID “I MIGHT BE A DEVIL SOON” BEFORE RAPING DRUNK GIRL, JAILED 10 YEARS

0

22-year-old Delwin Neo Kah Keng, who was 19 at the time of the offence, pleaded guilty to a charge of rape after raping a drunk 18-year-old girl at a birthday party and even bragging to his friend about what he had done, sharing a photo of the victim.

He also pleaded guilty to 2 other charges under the Children and Young Person Act for getting a 12-year-old girl to engage in obscene acts with him in a separate case, with 9 other charges being considered during his sentencing.

He was sentenced on 6 April to 9 years and 11 months imprisonment, as well as 6 strokes of the cane.

Recap

22-year-old Delwin Neo Kah Keng had previously pleaded guilty on 31 January at the High Court to one count of rape, and two other unrelated charges for offences made against another victim.

Neo, who was 19 at the time of the offence, had insisted on sending a drunk 18-year-old girl home, and sent his friends a series of messages, including “am I too innocent to not even touch her?”

His friends warned him not to touch her but he still forced himself on the victim and raped her.

What happened?

Neo was a full-time NSF at the time, and on 20 November 2019, he met the victim at a birthday party in Clarke Quay that he had organised for a friend at a club.

The victim got drunk at the party at about 2am, and was lying down drunk on a sofa; Neo then took a video of her and sent it to a WhatsApp group chat for the party attendees.

He told the group at 2.20am that he was going to send the girl home and one of is friends told him not to do so, but Neo insisted.

A promoter at the club offered to send the girl home but Neo insisted of sending her home himself, booking a taxi along the way.

The two then arrived at about 3.30am at the girl’s flat where she lived alone, and after entering her home, the girl told him to lock the gate and throw the keys through the gate after he left.

The girl was inside her bedroom, thinking that Neo had left, and took off almost all of her clothes before falling asleep on the bed.

Neo asked her to perform several explicit acts on him at some point but was rejected by the girl who went back to sleep.

He then texted a friend at about 3.45am, saying that the girl was not wearing anything on the bed, before texting another friend at about 4am, saying “I might be a devil soon.”

He then proceeded to rape the victim, who woke up during the assault – he then asked her if it was “nice” for her and continued raping her despite her pleas for him to stop.

He eventually stopped and was chased out of the flat by the victim, and he then kept asking her if she was okay and told her not to tell anyone about what he did.

Later that evening, Neo texted the victim and apologised, and she replied that he had raped her, which Neo didn’t deny and asked her how the matter could be settled.

The victim then called the police the next morning to lodge a report against Neo, who was then arrested on the same day at about 11.40am.
