21 Y.O ARRESTED FOR $350K CHINA OFFICIALS IMPERSONATION SCAM

0

The Police have arrested a 21-year-old woman for her suspected involvement in a case of China Officials Impersonation Scam (“COIS”).

On 20 September 2022, the Police received a report that another 21-year-old woman (“the victim”) had allegedly been kidnapped. Prior to the report, the parents of the victim, who were based in China, received a video of the victim with her hands and legs tied up, with a ransom demand from an unknown person communicating in Mandarin. Following the report, officers from Tanglin Police Division, Criminal Investigation Department, Police Intelligence Department and Commercial Affairs Department conducted extensive searches and investigations to locate the victim. She was eventually found to be safe and sound on 22 September 2022, in a Yishun flat rented by the 21-year-old woman, who was arrested.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim had received an unsolicited call from an officer from the Ministry of Health in Singapore who alleged that a phone line registered in the victim’s name was used to cheat people in China. When the victim denied this, the call was redirected to another scammer purporting to be an officer from the “China Police”, who further alleged that a bank account in her name was also found to be involved in money laundering activities in China. To avoid being deported, the scammer deceived the victim into transferring more than $350,000 as “bail money” to bank accounts provided by the scammer. Acting on the scammer’s instructions, the victim also recorded a video of herself being tied up to assist in the purported investigations. Thereafter, the scammer told the victim to cease communication and isolate herself in a “safe house” that the scammer had arranged.

Unknown to the victim, the scammer sent the compromised video to her parents in China and demanded a ransom for her release. Following the report, the Police managed to trace and locate the victim at the unit rented by the 21-year-old woman. Follow-up investigations revealed that the 21-year-old woman had acted on the scammer’s instructions to rent the room for the victim, and handed over a mobile phone with SIM card for the victim to use to communicate with the scammer. Police investigations are ongoing.

From January 2022 to August 2002, a total of 476 COIS cases were reported with losses amounting to at least $57.3 million. The Police would like to highlight that the China Police, INTERPOL and other overseas law enforcement agencies (LEAs) have no jurisdiction to help with any form of investigations without the approval of the Singapore Government. The Police take a serious view against any person who may be involved in scams, whether knowingly or unwittingly, and they would be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.

The Police would also like to advise members of the public to take the following precautions when they receive unsolicited calls, especially from unknown parties, especially those with the “+” prefix which originate overseas:

  • Ignore such calls and the caller’s instructions. No government agency will instruct payment through a telephone call or other social messaging platforms (WeChat or Facebook), or ask you for personal banking information such as your internet banking password;
  • For foreigners receiving calls from persons claiming to be from Police in your home country, call your Embassy/High Commission to verify the claims of the callers;
  • Refrain from giving out personal information and bank details, whether on websites or to callers over the phone. Personal information and bank details such as internet bank account usernames and passwords, OTP codes from tokens, are useful to criminals.
  • Do not make any funds transfer if the caller is of dubious identity.
  • Call a trusted friend or talk to a relative before you act. You may be overwhelmed by emotion and err in your judgment.
  • If in doubt, always hang up the call and check with the Singapore Police Force.

DRIVER CONFRONTED FOR TAILGATING – NOT HAPPY AT GETTING CAUGHT, COME OUT WANT TO FIGHT

0

Facebook user Fan Hao Chen, shared how he was tailgated by a Lexus at PLQ mall on 25 September at about 5.10pm.

He then confronted the driver for tailgating and the driver then allegedly retorted, “so what if I did?” before getting out of his car and aggressively approaching the OP.

The driver also allegedly threw things at the driver because he took photos of him, despite the presence of the security guards.

Here is what he said

Tail-Gating at PLQ Mall on 25th Sep (Sunday) 5.10pm

Please take note of this car *license plate redacted* next time you are at PLQ Mall or anywhere else. Just to save a few dollars, this car tail gated and speed through the gantry (could hear the tire screeching sound as he tried to follow closely behind my car after I drove past the gantry) and after being asked if he tail gated or not, he arrogantly replied “So what if I did?”.

Fortunately the carpark security arrived shortly as the driver got out of his car and started approaching me aggressively and later even threw things at me because I took photos of him and his car even in the presence of the security guards.

Eventually the security checked their records and confirmed he did not pay for the parking and they would also review their camera footage.

COUPLE PAID $60K FOR RENOVATION WORKS IN 2021, UNTIL NOW NO WORK CARRIED OUT

0

A netizen shared how she had paid $60k to an interior designer for renovation works to be done for her home.

However, nothing has been done since their payment in December 2021, and when she asked for her deposit back from the firm, they told her that the deposit was forfeited as “preliminaries”.

Here is what she said

Reno Scams.

We paid him $60k in December 2021 and until date, no works had been carried out. He created disputes that our contract doesn’t encompass the envelope that we wanted the structure to cover.

When we asked for our deposit back, he said that our deposits were forfeited as preliminaries were carried out and contract stated $60k was taken as payment.

Our hard-earned savings had been withheld by him. No submission or physical work were carried out. Police report made, court order summon (he had the audacity to ignore it), CASE filed and Minister letter sent.

Investigating further, we found that the person who is running the show is an undischarged bankrupt and was also the one responsible for his previous company, Platinum Builders & Consultancy, which is also insolvent.

You can read more about his previous company in this forum: *link redacted*

Recently many parties (including Owners, Sub-contractors, Works) have large amounts of money withheld by the company *company name redacted* since last year.

We need help in getting our hard earned savings back, how can he be keeping $60k without any works? Does anyone here have similar encounters?

S’PORE WOMAN ATE CANNABIS PLANT IN THAILAND, THOUGHT IT WAS KANG KONG

0

A housewife from Singapore spoke to The Straits Times on 24 September, sharing about how she had unwittingly consumed cannabis while tucking into a “nice” bowl of noodle soup during her holiday in Chiang Rai.

She said that he only realised that she had made a mistake when she ordered the same dish the following day, and noticed a picture of a cannabis leaf next to the dish’s photo on the menu.

She said that there was no indication that the dish that she ordered had contained cannabis, and she was shocked to find it in an ordinary dish.

She described the cannabis as being boiled in the soup of her noodles just like any other vegetables, and she had thought that it was just kangkong.

Cannabis sold almost everywhere in Thailand

This comes in the wake of Taiwan relaxing their laws on cannabis earlier this year, with more cannabis products being available and accessible in the country.

Another 33-year-old Singaporean who is having his holiday in Phuket, Thailand, shared with Shin Min Daily News that the local shops that are selling cannabis products are found almost everywhere.

In the Patong beach area, there were at least 4 cannabis shops within just a 1km stretch of road, and they can also even be found in convenience stores, supermarkets, bars and etc.

A cannabis syrup cocktail at a bar, costs just 280 baht, or SGD $10.67.

SIAM KIA BROUGHT $23K INTO S’PORE, DIDN’T KNOW NEED TO DECLARE, DETAINED @ CHANGI AIRPORT

A Thai Tiktoker, @iamsungstarwin, shared how he brought more than $20,000 into Singapore and ended up being detained at Changi Airport because he didn’t know that he had to declare it.

He posted the video onto his page on 10 September, sharing that he was travelling with 5 other friends and offered to help them convert their Thai baht into Singapore dollars for them.

So he then collated the money, which amounted to 610,000 baht (or SGD$23.253.92), and planned to prank his friends by holding onto the money and charging them a higher exchange rate.

But it soon went awry for Sung as he was then detained at Changi Airport for failing to declare the amount of cash that he was carrying.

Under Singapore law, travelers entering the country with more than $20,000 in cash are required to declare the money.

Sung was then questioned before being led to a separate area, but was soon released and he then resumed his journey and holiday with his friends.

COLLEAGUE WANT “TOMPANG” GRAB RIDE BUT REFUSED TO PAY, ACT BLUR

0

You calling Grab? Can I tompang.

I went to a seminar with some colleagues. When it was time to go home, A asked how I was going home as she stayed in the same area.

So I said that I will be calling for a Grab. A asked if she could tompang. I was taken aback and wondered what that meant.

Did she mean sharing the cost of the grab? But nevertheless, I was caught off guard and said ok.

During the ride, I kept thinking if she was going to say anything about sharing the cost. In the end, she did not but at least she didn’t ask to be sent to her place.

I reached home feeling kind of disgusted. Am I wrong to think that A was ‘buay paiseh’ (not shy), cos this is something that i will not do. I will not even wanna trouble anyone even if that person drove and offered me a ride. I always tell myself do not do something i dun want others to do to me.

I asked my family members, some agreed with me but some said I was too calculative. What do you guys think?

Btw, the grab ride is from my own pocket, cant claim.

Here are what netizens think:

  • Next time ask her if u can tompang la, if she got face she sure say OK. Then u will hv ur ans
  • If it is just a one time off thing, just let it be. But if it happens many times, you may want to ask her if she wants to share the ride.
  • USUALLY when ppl in such situations share grab, they will add a stop, then split the payment equally. Both end up paying less. If you not happy then say no the next time she asks to tompang.

EX-M’SIA PM MAHATHIR – I WILL BECOME PRIME MINISTER AGAIN IF PEOPLE ASK FOR IT

0

Former prime minister of Malaysia, 97-year-old Mahathir Mohamad, was speaking during a Gerakan Tanah Air forum held on 24 September 2022.

He was asked if he is open to become the prime minister of Malaysia again for the 3rd time, to which he said he would only if the people ask for it.

However, he added that he would preferably like to rest – saying that even as he is resting, he can play the role of consultant or advisor to the prime minister.

Mahathir added that if the situation calls for it, it would be difficult for him to just think about himself, and that he will accept the job if there was an insistence for it, and only if the people ask for it.

He added that he didn’t set up Pejuang and the Gerakan Tanah Air to become the prime minister, and that even if he was to become PM, he wouldn’t be able to commit to the full term of 5 years – he said the he could probably only serve for 1 year.

Mahathir remains the only prime minister to have been appointed twice in Malaysia, first when he was leader of Barisan Nasional and second when he was chairman of Pakatan Harapan.

EX WITH NEW BF, STILL HAUNTS EX-BF AND EXPECTS HIM TO FULFIL HER DEMANDS

0

My ex broke up with me 4 months ago.

We continued texting after the breakup. Despite multiple attempts trying to win her back for first 3 months, she refused saying that we are not compatible, but we can still be close friends.

The Toxic Ex

I still harbour feelings for her and until now, i still cant move on.

We used to meet weekly for lunch as her workplace is opposite my school. Now that she has a new boyfriend (they dated for more than a month), I tried to distance myself from her because it’s hurts to see someone I love so much dating someone else that isn’t me… after knowing that she’s attached, I replied to her texts very briefly and late (probably 4-10 hours after) and she realised something was wrong.

I told her I was busy with uni as there are so many assessments to do but she doesn’t understand cuz she didn’t go uni, and she argued that even her other guy friends in NS can still text her even though they have restricted phone usage time, why me, a uni student who is supposed to have more free time, can’t text her? After that we argued but things are fine now

For the past 2 weeks, she keep initiating chats, calling me, asking for my availability to meet her, and even suggested at her house so that she can cook me food… I really want to ask her “what in the world do u want from me man??”

But of course I didn’t. She also asked if we can go for staycays at the end of this year, or go for a trip next year as planned when we were still together, and offered to be godsiblings, which is to her, a stronger bond than a relationship. I really don’t understand what is going through this person’s mind. Like she already has a new guy, why is she trying to keep me in her life??

Can anyone enlighten me on why? And… I really don’t want to be a second option ….. till now she’s telling me about the problems she’s facing at work, her family, her bf, and I find myself being too worried and concerned about her that it’s eating me inside that everyday I’m stressing and hating myself for still having feelings towards her.

Although I told her I will always support her till the end, i don’t think I can cope with it anymore ….

Every day I just want to block her number but I find myself way too soft-hearted to press that button. So, I’m living my life in misery everyday. Also my friends (mutual friends) are trying to invite her to our trip next year despite knowing we broke up, and I heard she agreed to it, which just make things so much worse…. I really hope I will get over this person very soon and not be involved in her life anymore.

I don’t understand how people can still be friends with their ex, because I know I can never be one.

The passenger then boarded Ching’s taxi, and told him that he was rejected by the taxi in front because he doesn’t know how to go to 2 Turf Club Road.

The taxi driver then refused to move out of the taxi queue and Ching was unable to drive out of the taxi queue as a result.

The driver in front then told Ching to reverse his taxi back out onto the busy road instead, as well as allegedly using vulgarities on him.

Here is what he said (SIC)

Please Noted the said driver committed 3 offends

1 , Rejected a potential rider with No valid reason …
2 , Using a foul language to me when advised to move out of queue …
