MUM-IN-LAW SHOWS UP UNINVITED, THEN CONDUCTS SPOT-CHECKS ON COUPLE’S HOME

0

I hope my MIL gives me some family time

I am not saying my MIL is a bad person, but I hope she can give some family time for me to be with my son.

I am 43, my wife is 36, definitely we know how to take care of our own 5 years old son. But just yesterday, for example, I know I cannot but to smile and welcome her to our house again, when she has already had the weekdays to take care of my son.

My wife and I take turns to give her a sum of money monthly to babysit for us in her house when we go to work.

But during weekends, before I can plan any activity to bring my son out, my wife would tell me that her mother is coming to our house.

Not that I do not welcome her, but whenever she comes over, it is like a soft army style of stand by the house. She would pick all the flaws she can find in the house.

For example, she told me that there are ants in the potato chips yesterday, which I don’t find any, she just threw them away and said she would buy some for me when she comes again.

She knows her own daughter seldom help with housework, so I have to make sure the house is clean and tidy before she comes.

She would buy all sort of food for us to eat, for fear we didn’t eat enough on a Sunday. I want my son to use a spoon to learn to eat by himself, but then my MIL would always feed him.

I dare not oppose whatever my MIL does, as I know my wife would be sandwiched between me and her mother if we quarrel.

Can someone advise me on how to build a better relation with my MIL without having to give in anything on my part? Thank you.

CAR RENTAL COMPANY TOLD CUSTOMER TO PAY $2,000 FOR” NON-EXISTENT REPAIR”

0

Before the year ends, just want to let this out.

Be prepared for a long story ahead.

In the middle of this 2020, I used a car rental service called (“T”) to rent a car to run some errands. It wasn’t my first time using this service. Unfortunately, while using the rental car, my mom accidentally bumped into another car. It was a very light bump, with a small scratch on the other car and an almost invisible scratch on the rented car. No one was injured. I took photos of both cars and other necessary information.

The third party whose car my mom accidentally scratched contacted me and said he might not want to pursue this further as it is just a small scratch. Nevertheless, as a rule-abiding hirer, I reported this incident to T and subsequently understand that the car that my mom was using was under a car rental company called S. I understood it as T being a platform (not owning any cars) who engaged car rental companies (e.g. S) to use their fleet of cars, correct me if I am wrong. Someone from S contacted me (hereafter called “R”) to guide me through the details for this accident process.

Anyway, T told me to rent the same car for the next few days to bring to an inspection centre to assess the damage, this sounds reasonable, I am paying for the loss of income of the car (other people might have rented the car to use). On the day of bringing the car to the inspection centre, T provided me with two wrong addresses and made me drive around looking for the correct workshop and wasting my time. At the inspection, the person basically took a few photos and had a call with T and said I could go back.

suka suka asked to pay maximum excess

And I thought it was all over. Until R contacts me a few days later and asked me to pay the insurance excess of $2,000 (such a nice rounded number which isn’t listed on T’s website or anywhere at all).

He starts telling me a lot of jargon and stuff that a layman wouldn’t understand. Thanks to this incident, I also understood more about the word ‘excess’. Initially, I feel very angry that he suddenly throw me this $2,000 amount ($2,140 including GST) and ask me to pay up. And after reading up and asking my friend, I found out this is an amount that I needed to pay IF insurance is activated. He told me that scratches on the other vehicle will be claimed against us (aka me). When I probed further for photos, repair costs, and receipts of repairs for the other vehicle, he said he will revert back to me with full details once he has all the necessary costs. Hello?!

You don’t have the details you want to ask me to pay $2,000?

Eventually, the amount they finally quoted me is ~$700. Breakdown of $X for the third party vehicle (this is a reasonable amount), $Y for the rented vehicle and $Z for loss of income for the rented vehicle for the days that it is being repaired. So they tell me I don’t have to pay excess anymore, just this amount.

T keeps giving me a tight deadline to transfer the money to them. I wanted to know EXACTLY what I was paying for. I asked for the invoices for repair (if you repair at a workshop there is an invoice right?) and the photos of before and after the repairs. T came up with a generic invoice (damage repair and spray paint and administrative fee) for the $Y just to shut me up. No photos. How to believe that they actually did the repairs? The workshop is under you, the car is yours, I can’t just take everything at face value right?

Workshop name don’t have

I asked for the workshop name, and more details with regards to the invoice. And the person told me that the repairs have not been done yet. Then how do you get the invoice? The person specifically told me that I can get the photos of the vehicle after I paid the amount, after they repair. I wanted to SEE the repairs before paying. I even offered to go down to the workshop and pay on the spot because T told me they can’t pay for the repairs before I pay up the amount. I OFFERED to go down and pay and everything. Guess what? They slap me with a “This is a final warning, pay by this date or we will take legal actions towards you” – kind of email. I just wanted to know the exact repairs done. It’s not that I want to avoid paying for this accident, I merely just want to know what I am paying for. Is that wrong?

After being in a turmoil for days, I have no choice but to pay up the amount, because I simply don’t have the financial means to ‘fight’ against T or be in a legal case over this. After paying that $700, T still continued to disable the account and I have tried multiple attempts writing in to the Customer Service, talking through the online chat, but it just seems like that account is being ‘blacklisted’ and they don’t care about any requests about that account.

I stopped using T ever since and closed my account, forsaking the e-money I have left in the account. A joke here is, my mom and I each have an account with T. So when I sent in two separate emails to request for termination of the accounts, guess what? T only replied to the email for my account, the one not involved in this incident. Totally ignoring the email for my mom’s account.

Throughout this entire thing, T (or R) keeps wanting to act as the liaison between the third party and me, saying that they will liaise with the third party to see if any payment or repairs is needed for their car etc. This is very suspicious and I see it as T (or R) wanting to act as the middleman and rip as much as they can from me (just my thought). I tried contacting the third party by myself but he seems to be ignoring my messages or seem to have arrived at some form of agreement with T (or R). There are also other ‘suspicious’ points, like asking me to pay up $2,000 with no concrete details and subsequently arriving at another amount. What if I have actually paid the $2,000?

EVEN TILL NOW, after paying that $700, I have yet to see a single photo of the repairs done (that was promised by T) or where exactly repairs were even needed (lol). It’s like paying up the money because T asked me to pay up and threatened me with a legal case if I don’t. I didn’t see where my money went to. That is the most infuriating/unjust part of this entire thing.

I have evidence of emails/chat conversations/pictures for the things I mentioned above. A part of me really wants ‘justice’, but I am really not in the position to fight against a company. Just want to rant everything here as a form of closure for me, before the year ends.

In total, I have lost around $1,500 (not a small sum to me), excluding wasted time, emotional/mental stress that I had to go through with regards to this incident. I am looking to try car sharing services again, but definitely from somewhere else, somewhere less shady.

Lesson learnt: for car rental (or car sharing) companies, sure, they are cheap and affordable, but if you get into an accident, they will do everything to rip you off. Technically, they aren’t doing anything wrong or against the law, and I understand this is how they ‘make money’. But it just makes me feel shortchanged and unjustified. I don’t feel good/satisfied with the random numbers they throw me and expect me to just abide and pay up. I know I am at their mercy, having read the contract and agreement before deciding to rent the vehicle, but come on, at least make me pay up the money feeling more convinced.

Despite this being a rant, I do have a legitimate question:

  1. Is there any governing authority that regulates and oversees the rental car market? More specifically, the repairs and motor workshops, ensuring fair and reasonable repair charges. LTA? CASE? VICOM? OneMotoring? I will even go to the MP if it helps (next time if it happens again)

GIRL SIGNED $170+ STARHUB LINE FOR CHEAPER IPHONE, THEN CAN’T AFFORD THE BILLS

0

A netizen shared how she signed up for the most expensive Starhub mobile plan in order to buy the iPhone Pro Max 13 at a cheaper price, and she ended up not being able to afford the bill for it and has to ask her mother for money to pay it.

Here is what she said

For context, I am a 19-year-old girl still studying in Poly, and I’m working part time as a F&B server on the weekends, earning about $8/hr.

Ever since I was in secondary school, I have been using the Samsung Galaxy S6 that my mother bought for me under a cheaper plan with Starhub, for about $50/month which my mum pays for, using it until I started Poly.

I told her one day that I want to get a new phone after my Starhub contact expired, and wanted the Iphone 13 Pro Max.

But it was really expensive, the phone was $989 for a Starhub plan with 30GB, and monthly bill of $65, which was slightly more than my expired plan.

The other option was a Starhub plan that costs $55 per month for 15 GB, which is about the same as my old plan, but the phone could cost $1369.

My mum refused to get it for me and said that she didn’t have the money to spend like that, so I told her to transfer ownership of the plan to my name and I would sign up for the Starhub line myself.

I told her that I will pay for the phone and the Starhub bill myself since I’m working part time on the weekends and have some money.

She said okay, and I then signed up for the 120gb per month Starhub plan at $155 per month (with another $18 in add ons), and used my savings to buy the phone at $209.

I was so happy with my purchase.

However, the first two months I couldn’t afford to pay the bill and had to ask my mum for help. I make about $400++ from my part time job and after minusing my daily expenses for food and etc at school, I simply don’t have enough to pay for the bill.

I am starting to regret my decision, but my Starhub contract runs for 22 more months and I can’t terminate it without paying the penalty fee.

I don’t know what to do now, my mum is really stressed out with the extra financial burden that I am laying on her, please someone gimme advice.

MAN SAYS CANNOT GET LOAN, RENTING A HDB SEEMS LIKE A MORE VIABLE OPTION

0

Many people will think that with CPF it is better to buy than to rent. But for self-employed and single people, it is a totally different story.

It is more difficult to secure a loan with a bank for individuals who are buying an HDB as a self-employed person compared to an employed person.

I went to a bank with my income tax report stating that I am earning over 6 figures for continuously 3 years but the bank is only willing to loan me $70,000 to buy a 4-room flat. My friend who is making $2.5k a month manage to secure a loan of over $250,000 from the bank and I find it ridiculous.

I did the math and figured I could buy something small, and live without much reno. Money is tight, but I can pay my bills on time.

Previously, I rented overseas and feel like it’s a waste of money if you can afford the downpayment to buy and have financial stability – a month’s rent is almost a month’s mortgage. It’s also much harder to save up the downpayment if such a big chunk of change is going to rent.

I also have a very high need to control my living space because of my background so renting didn’t give me the sense of security I needed.

That being said, even the cheapest 3-4 rooms at non-matured estates go for almost half a million easy.

If you dunno where you want to stay or whether you’ll get married or be ok moving back in with your family then renting may be the better option since it’s much more flexible, and won’t wipe out your savings.

It seems like renting a HDB is a more viable option for now.

MAN PAID $1.7K FOR INVESTMENT COURSE BY “FAMOUS EXPERT”, LEARNED NOTHING & LOST $12K

0

A netizen shared how he paid about $1.7k for an investment course by a “famous investment coach” in Singapore, where he learned nothing.

He shared that almost everything that the coach taught him at the investment course could be found on YouTube for free, and he also lost about $12k in Forex trading.

Here is what he said

“Throughout my 2 years in NS, I managed to save about $10k to $12k by the time I ORDed, and wanted to grow that money through investments.

I knew nothing about investments at the time, and the only thing I knew was *name redacted*, a famous investment expert in Singapore, I’m sure you have heard of him.

So I paid about $1.7k to attend one of his investment courses, where there was a free 3.5 hour seminar about the basics of forex trading and investments in general.

He then later invited us to the “advanced classes” of his investment course that ran for about 4 days, and he said there was a “one time promotional fee” of $1.7k, and that the usual fee was $2k.

And to be honest, personally, I feel like I learned nothing throughout the whole 4 days of the investment course. Half the time he appeared to be talking to himself. Anyway, I later went online and found the same things that he was teaching, was availalable for free on YouTube.

Everything that he taught in the investment course could be found on YouTube, and I could’ve saved that $1.7k…

Anyway long story short, I lose the whole of my NS savings through Forex trading, and I do have some other money in Crypto, but they are in the red now, so my losses could be even worse.”

MAN SAYS ONLINE GURUS OFFERING “INVESTMENT COURSES” ARE ALL SCUM/SCAM

0

Instagram ‘traders’ who sell ‘ investment courses’ are the scum of the Earth.

Seriously. These people don’t even make money from trading options, they make money by selling courses and the occasional photoshop screenshot. I’m talking about people like A Investments.

Complete scams and snake oil salesmen. They sell a ‘dream’ by posting pictures of luxury items, exotic cars and travelling that they achieved by trading options when really they achieved that by suckering hundreds if not thousands of people or more.

If these guys could consistently net money from day trading options, they would have their own hedge fund or manage 9-10 figure portfolios instead of selling discord group chats or investment courses for $9.99.

The classic idea of not making money by digging for gold but by selling the shovel to the gold digger.

It’s disgusting – it’s one thing wanting to educate people on responsible finance and investing – it’s another thing teaching people who have ZERO knowledge of financial markets about bull like technical analysis and day trading options.

I’m a firm believer that if you aren’t the type that knows how to conduct your own research outside of your confirmation bias and self-educate at the minimum, you are going to lose money trading options.

All of it. These guys are just setting people up to lose money. I’m blown away these people don’t get knocked out of business with lawsuits. Is it really as simple as just saying “not financial advice”?

So, what are your takes on these new Instagram/YouTube ‘investors’? There are very few guys I think are actually good – such as MeetKevin and he doesn’t even really do anything other than voice his opinion on the markets and news for the day.

TAXI DRIVER FIRED AFTER DELIBERATELY DROPPING PREGNANT WOMAN AT WRONG LOCATION

0

A pregnant woman who travelled via a ComfortDelGro cab with her two children ended up at the wrong location after a Taxi driver deliberately dropped them at the wrong place and showed them attitude.

The woman’s husband booked a taxi for his wife to Yishun but the taxi driver dropped them off at Toa Payoh after an argument.

Following the story that went viral, ComfortDelgro has responded to the complaint against their Taxi driver and has fired the taxi driver.

Background:

At 9.54pm, I booked a cab for my wife and 2 kids who were at Marsiling to come back home to Yishun using the Comfort Delgro app. A few minutes later, the cab driver, LIM CHYE BENG, called to inform that he has reached the location.

When my wife and kids were walking towards the cab, he lighted his cigarette and told to wait inside the cab while waiting for him to finish smoking. It took him more than 5 minutes to finish smoking before he started driving.

Go via long route

Since it’s not a fixed fare, my wife instructed the driver her preferred route (BKE – SLE – Mandai). However, he suggested via CTE, but my wife declined as it was clearly out of the way. The driver then continued to drive. In the car, my wife was busy handling two sleepy toddlers without being aware of the journey. When the driver reached the expressway, the driver drove passed SLE going towards PIE.

Feeling something was off, my wife checked the map and told the driver “Uncle, I say Yishun. Why you want to go towards Toa Payoh?”. The driver was defensive and lied saying “No, in front there is Mandai” when it was clearly heading towards Lornie Rd/Braddell.

Deliberately drops her off at wrong destination

He then asked my wife “Usually how much you travel from Marsiling to Yishun?”. After my wife said it’s less than $20, he started to get angsty and showed attitude. To my wife’s horror, the driver said “Like that I drop you off at Toa Payoh. You go take another cab, I don’t want to drive you! I wanna go back home I stay at Toa Payoh. You are wasting my time and petrol”.

Being heavily pregnant, my wife began to have panic attacks and have series of shortness of breath. So she called me and I told her to put on speaker for me to talk to the driver. When on speaker, I ordered the driver to send my wife and kids back to Yishun but the driver just refused to do so.

Without any sympathy, the driver just alighted my wife and kids at Toa Payoh and refused to send back to Yishun despite him being in the wrong and knowing that my pregnant wife were with 2 sleepy toddlers. After my wife and kids alighted the cab, it took her awhile to accept what was really happening. She was in shocked and emotionally distressed. It took her awhile before she called the customer service line to lodge a complaint.

The customer service officer asked what happened as she typed the the whole thing. When my wife paused to take a breath, the officer budge in and asked why didn’t she take the offer for $20. She said “Since the driver offered you $20, why are you still crying?”. My wife replied that she has not fully tell the whole situation. Only after my wife explained the whole thing, the the officer started to acknowledge my wife’s traumatic experience.

This is utterly disgusting and resulted in a traumatic experience especially for my wife and kids. Not only the driver was rude, he was inhumane to drop at a place that was far from the actual destination despite knowing that my pregnant wife was with 2 toddlers who were crying from this whole situation. What kind of human does that?! In addition, poor service from Comfort DelGro.

Now my wife have trouble sleeping, have series of panic attack and shortness of breath. Who is gonna be responsible for all this?? I want a full refund and an explanation to this with a follow up action on the driver!!!

3 MEN & 1 WOMAN ARRESTED, PHISHING SCAMS TARGETING BANK CUSTOMERS

0

The Police have arrested three men and a woman, aged between 34 and 46, for their suspected involvement in a series of bank phishing scams targeting bank customers.

In August 2022, the Police received several reports of bank phishing scams targeting bank customers. In this latest variant, the victims received unsolicited SMSes stating that their bank accounts had been suspended temporarily and they were advised to reactivate their accounts by clicking an embedded URL link.

Upon clicking on the link in the SMS received, the victims were directed to a spoofed Internet banking log-in page, where they keyed in their credit card details and One-Time Passwords (OTPs), which were received on their mobile phones.

Victims later realised that they had been scammed when they discovered unauthorised transactions made from their bank accounts.

Between 18 and 19 August 2022, officers from the Police Intelligence Department and Commercial Affairs Department mounted an island-wide operation and arrested three men and one woman suspected to be part of a transnational syndicate perpetrating bank phishing scams in Singapore.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the four persons were allegedly involved in sending mass SMS messages to more than 100 random phone users in Singapore to deceive victims to provide their credit card details via spoofed bank websites. The fraudulently obtained credit card details were then used to make fraudulent purchases. One victim had fallen prey to this scam variant, suffering a total loss of about $940.

These four individuals are believed to be working with overseas syndicate members and were planning to perpetrate more similar phishing scams in Singapore.

The three men and one woman will be charged in Court 4A on 20 August 2022 with the offence of abetment by conspiracy to access a computer with intent to commit an offence under Section 4(3) read with Section 12 of the Computer Misuse Act 1993.

The offence carries a fine not exceeding $50,000, imprisonment for a term not exceeding 10 years, or both.

52 Y.O INVESTIGATED FOR CHEATING, “PRE-PAYMENT FOR GOLF SETS”

0

Between April and August 2022, the Police received several police reports concerning the failure to deliver goods and services from a business.

The suspect had purportedly told the victims to trade in used golf sets to purchase brand-new golf sets at a discounted price. Pursuant to this agreement, the victims traded in their used golf sets along with pre-payment for brand-new golf sets. Subsequently, the victims did not receive their golf sets.

Through extensive investigations, a 52-year-old man was identified as the suspect and investigations are ongoing against him for the offence of cheating.

Anyone found guilty of Cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code 1871 may be punishable with an imprisonment term which may extend to 10 years, and a fine.

The Police have zero tolerance towards such criminal acts and will not hesitate to act against those who blatantly disregard the law.
