48 Y.O MAN KILLED IN JURONG EAST FIRE, USED TO REPAIR & GIVE AWAY APPLIANCES FOR FREE

0

The 48-year-old man who was killed in a fire that broke out at a Jurong East HDB flat on 16 August, had been living there with his sister.

According to Shin Min Daily News, the deceased is 48-year-old Huang Mingquan, who lived there with his older sister, 50-year-old Huang Xiumei.

The sibling’s other 43-year-old sister told SMDN that the older Ms Huang sells newspapers and makes less than $300 a month; while Mr Huang works odd jobs and often took in old appliances and recyclable items.

The 43-year-old also said that the deceased would repair the electrical appliances that he brought home and sell them to the neighbours for just $2 or $3, or even give them away sometimes.

Recap

[Final Update: Block 236 Jurong East Street 21]

At about 2.50am today (16 Aug), SCDF was alerted to a fire at the above-mentioned location.

Upon SCDF’s arrival, the fire was raging inside a unit on the 9th floor. Firefighters penetrated into the heavily smoke-logged unit to conduct firefighting operations. In addition, a Combined Platform Ladder was deployed at the rear of the block for external firefighting.

SCDF firefighters extinguished the fire using three water jets. As a result of the fire, the entire unit was affected by heat and smoke damage.

An occupant in the affected unit self evacuated before SCDF’s arrival.

Due to the close proximity of an adjacent unit, SCDF firefighters conducted forced entry into this unit and rescued three occupants.

A body was found in the affected unit and pronounced dead by an SCDF paramedic.

Damping down operations* are currently ongoing.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

*Damping down refers to the application of water to wet burnt surfaces immediately after a fire is put out. It is to prevent any potential rekindle of fire from the hot burnt surfaces.

COUPLE FINALLY GOT THEIR BTO FLAT AFTER 5 YEARS, BUT FOUND DENTS & MANY OTHER DEFECTS

A netizen, @home.sweet.home, shared how they finally got their 4-room BTO flat after waiting more than 5 years for it.

However, when they finally collected their keys to their new flat, they hired a defects team to inspect the unit and found a whole host of issues with the unit.

Here is what they said

*Update: Cost to hire @sgdefectscan ranges from $435-455 for 4rm flats. Dm them for price enquiries and quote my IG for special rates!*

Is it necessary to hire a professional team to check for defects?

It’s a YES for us! As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure. Rather than having issues cropping up later, it’s better to identify them early and get them rectified right at the beginning!

Honestly when we took a look around ourselves, we didn’t spot much defects or major flaws. But when the team from @sgdefectscan came in, they starting pasting soooo many stickers around and we were like whut?! We would never have been able to identify all these by ourselves (nor our ID), especially those that are not visible to the eye. E.g. hollow walls.

The whole rectification process by BSC dragged over ~5 weeks, which is painfully long, but I think its something necessary so we can start reno with a good foundation. Thankfully our unit didn’t have anything more major such as leaking pipes, uneven tiles or water ponding as these might take even longer to be rectified.

FYI for BTO units, defects should be rectified by BSC for free (technically you paid for the house la). But note that it should be done BEFORE renovation, because the “blaming game” sets in once different contractors come in for reno works.

What other kind of defects have you encountered? Share with me in the comments!

Netizens’ comments

  • Just report to HDB. New flats are under one year DLP
  • U better check the elec n plumbing
  • Is this a total brand new directly from HDB? After the defects , did the HDB repair all defects ?
  • Hahah I enjoyed watching this , it’s like spotting “what’s wrong with this picture” but it’s good that you are stringent now instead of discovering it later. When I went through my house last time, I will lay awake thinking “did I catch them all”

MAN’S DAUGHTER REFUSES TO COME HOME BECAUSE OF BAD SMELL FROM NEIGHBOUR’S CHICKENS

0

A netizen shared how his neighbour keeps live chickens in cages outside their first-floor HDB unit of Block 358 Yishu Rig Road.

The chickens are directly outside the netizen’s residents and the smells and sounds coming from the chickens are affecting his family, with the cages being outside his children;’s bedroom.

The netizen, Mr Suhardi, said that as a result of the foul smell from the chickens, one of his young daughters is choosing to stay at her grandmother’s home instead and doesn’t want to come home anymore.

Speaking to Stomp, Suhardi said: “This has affected my relationship with my family negatively. The owner has been feeding the chickens leftover food. This causes a very strong and unpleasant smell, especially combined with the chicken’s faeces. On top of that, the leftover food is attracting rats, especially during the night.”

Suhardi added that he has brought the issue up to the town council, the police and his MP; which resulted in the authorities telling the neighbours to move the cages, but the neighbour hasn’t done so.

A warning letter was also issued to the neighbour to remove the chickens by 1 May this year but Nee Soon Town Council said that the neighbour requested for alternative ways to keep the chickens.

NSTC said “Nee Soon Town Council believes in taking a compassionate approach towards solving issues for residents. As such, we are attempting mediation between the neighbours. We are also exploring alternative ways for the chicken owner to keep the chickens while also considering the living environment of the feedback provider.”

BOY STOLE WOMAN’S WALLET WITH $1.7K INSIDE, THEN RETURNS EMPTY WALLET

0

A teenage boy allegedly took a woman’s wallet at a playground in Punggol on 5 August, before confessing to his misdeeds and returning an empty wallet to her.

The money that the boy took was the woman’s financial assistance from the Social Service Office, because she is an unemployed single mother with 5 children and has to take care of her baby who has separation anxiety.

The mother of the boy who stole the money, told the woman that her son regrets taking her wallet, which contained the $1,690.

She told the woman, Ms Nora, that they promise to pay back $100 monthly, as they are having financial difficulties as well.

Nora then said that she will be reaching out to the police to see if the police report that she had filed could be rescinded.

Background

The woman was with her children at a playground in Punggol Central on 5 August, when a boy about 13 to 15 years old asked her for directions to the bus exchange.

She had placed her wallet in her stroller bag before talking to the boy, and it was hanging from her stroller.

She told STOMP that the money that was stolen was her financial assistance from the SSO, which was $1,690 in $50 notes.

She said that the money that was stolen was the only income she had to sustain her family’s expenses, and she was left with $0 in her bank.

She added that she sat down in front of her home and cried, while thinking back about the “high possibility” that the boy had stolen her purse, citing how “quickly” the boy had run off after asking for directions.

The story was published on STOMP and the boy’s mother then reached out to her, telling her that she found the wallet under her son’s pillow but there was o money left inside it.

She texted Nora ad told her that “U have son and I’m sure u will do anything for ur so not go jail”.

DRIVER SNATCHED PARKING LOT, THEN TELLS MAN: “WHO ASK YOUR WIFE WAIT SO FAR”

Facebook user Zai Ali shared how she was with her husband side their car and waiting for a parking lot, when another driver allegedly cut their queue and took their lot.

She wrote that they had already signalled but the guy just went ahead and parked his vehicle at the parking lot instead.

Her husband then went to confront the driver and knocked on his window gently, telling the man then they were waiting for the lot that he was in.

The man allegedly told him “your wife s—-d ah, wait far.”

Here is what she said (SIC)

“Nowadays people got no ethics. We waited for carpark at IMM but not really near cos will jam the entrance. Gave signal but this guy just jumped queue and parked.

My husband went to him and wanted to speak to the driver. He refused to open the window. My husband knocked his window gently…he said “what”.

My husband said we have been waiting for the slot. He said your wife stupid ah wait far. My husband said we didn’t want to jam the entrance.

We gave signal. Tsk tsk shame on you”

3 PEOPLE INJURED & SENT TO HOSPITAL AFTER LARGE TREE FELL AT ULU PANDAN C.C

A tree had reportedly fallen at Ulu Pandan Community Centre yesterday, pinning two people under the tree while another victim was found injured nearby.

All three victims were conscious when sent to the hospital and are in stable condition, according to Channel NewsAsia.

The SCDF said that they were alerted to the unfortunate incident at about 6pm, at 170 Ghim Moh Road.

Officers from the Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team were deployed and they had to lower themselves down a slope and went through the vegetation in order to reach the victims.

Two persons were found trapped under the large tree, with another person found injured nearby.

SCDF officers immediately began rescuing the victims after ensuring the fallen tree was stable and used cutting equipment to reach the two that were trapped.

Medical personnel were also on-site to monitor the victims’ vital signs, and K9 search dogs were also deployed to make sure there weren’t any other trapped victims nearby.

The incident is currently being investigated by Ulu Pandan Community Club, who is working to establish the facts of the incident.

ANNOYED ELEPHANT KILLS THAI OWNER & RIPS HIM IN HALF, THEN STANDS OVER HIS BODY

0

A 20-year-old elephant in Thailand, Pom Pam, reportedly killed his owner, 32-year-old Supachai Wongfaed, by ripping him apart.

The elephant had reportedly killed its owner after being forced to work under the hot sun and was apparently overworked and annoyed at the human.

The incident happened in the Tha Yu subdistrict, and police officers from the Takua Thung Police Statio responded to calls about Supachai’s death at about 11.30am on Wednesday,

The officers, along with rescue workers ad the chief of the village, went to the rubber plantation where Supachai was killed, ad found his body split in half in a pool of blood.

The elephant was also seen standing over his body.

Officers from the Phang Nga Provincial Livestock were called to sedate the elephant using a dart gun and tranquillizers so that Supachai’s body could be retrieved and handed over to his relatives for his funeral.

Officers from the Takua Thung Police Station later discovered that the elephant was forced to carry wood in the rubber plantation before the attack happened.

They deduced that the hot weather had made the elephant go crazy and kill its owner.

NETIZEN SAYS IT’S HARD TO BECOME FRIENDS WITH THOSE WHO HAVE BIG SOCIAL CIRCLES

0

Anyone feels like people with a big social circle tend to be much harder to be friends with?

I notice this aplenty of times with such people. In person, they have incredible social skills in talking and being friendly and joking…

But they’ll never stay around long. They’ll only stay in a meetup a period of time before saying they need go off somewhere else. Then when you try to jio them out again, they’ll make up 101 excuses not to come.

It’s such an ironic thing. I’ve come to call this the ‘Social Circle Limit’ hypothesis. Basically, once a person’s social circle gets too big, the person will stop actively trying to make friends and will never open up to anyone outside of their existing established social circle.

But they’re smart about their situation. They’ll only go for hangouts or meet with new people when it benefits them somehow, but never for plain socialisation. They see it as the lowest priority in their life.

Whereas a person with few friends have the mentality of ‘I’ll be open to making friends with whoever!’, these people with too many friends have cultivated the mentality of ‘I’ll be extremely selective of who I want as a friend’.

Now why am I making this weird post? It’s advice actually. For those of you out there trying to expand your social circle, please learn on who you should invest your efforts in and who you shouldn’t.

Basically, avoid people who already look like they have a ton of friends. You’re never going to be actual friends with them… I had to learn it the hard way.

Netizen’s comments

As a friendly introvert, socializing is the lowest priority and I don’t see anything wrong with that. I just don’t have the energy to hang out with people everyday.

I mostly hang out with people with mutual interests and even then, our schedules have to match. I do make an exception for childhood friends though and they tend to surprise me with random interests.

Recently, we’ve developed an interest in birds separately and I think it’s hilarious yet amazing. Why do you find the need to socialize for the sake of socializing?

MAN ALLEGEDLY DIED AFTER FALLING FROM BUILDING, LANDED OUTSIDE GIRL’S WINDOW

0

A netizen, @starryeyes224, shared how a Chinese man in his 40s had allegedly died after falling from height and landed right outside her window yesterday morning (20 August).

Here is what she said

This morning at 6.10am exactly, a 40+ year old Chinese man jumped down and he landed right in front of my toilet, kitchen and master bedroom window.

He was face down with arms outstretched, but he probably fell from less than 10 storeys because everything was intact.

We live on the second floor, so it’s really close to us. I wasn’t home when it happened but all my family members and neighbours saw his body after they heard a loud bang.

The man’s wife and son came down and they didn’t even cry or look surprised. They said their father is like that and he likes to drink a lot.

My brother took a photo of his body (covered already) and I saw the photo. I’m utterly traumatised by this incident because it happened right outside our home, and I walk that path almost everyday.

And every time I shower now, I’m going to think of that spot right outside my window. I hope the man is at peace now but I just can’t get over how cavalier his family members’ reactions were.

How can I get over this? Now I’m afraid to shower, or even go home and walk that path because of what has happened.

Update: When I told my boyfriend’s father what happened, as I stayed over last night, he wanted to buy 4D with my block number.

He also told me whenever i walk past that place, I should internally wish the man peace and tell him not to disturb me

Netizens’ comments

  • OP it’s ok to talk to friends or family about it, maybe seek professional help if you can.
  • Hey, I’m not a mental health professional, but if an event happened that makes it such that you are afraid to do daily activities, or associating non-dangerous activities with “danger” (i.e: showering = scary), you should see a therapist about it. If you treat the trauma response ASAP, you might not need a lot of sessions to reframe that incident in your mind. If you let it fester, it could become a more serious form of trauma that is PTSD.
You can go to a polyclinic and explain to the doctor what happened, and ask to get a referral for a therapist. Explain the symptomps you have (scared to shower, can’t walk the path etc) and they will guide you. I’m so sorry that this happened to you—but know that there is help available to you!
  • Talk to your family and maybe see a therapist. That sounds incredibly traumatic.
