GUY WITH $200K IN SAVINGS, ASKS IF IT IS OKAY TO BE JOBLESS FOR A FEW YEARS

0

For some reasons (undisclosed here) , I may be incomeless for a few years. i have about 200K savings, staying in my parent home but i gave them a lump sum of 50K at one shot. told them is for next few years of me being jobless( not that i want)

Should not have any expenses since i would not go out at all! So maybe phone bill cost $30 per month and insurance which i should have enough saving to tank for five years of payment.

Anyone similar situation to me? So my question is has anyone also incomeless for a few years? So when u get back to salaryman – how did u cope. And what u do when u are incomeless and mental wise all ok? Asking for reference and mental preparation

  • Might want to have a plan? Like what you intend to do during these few years.
Last time I had a friend who did that, left the company and took a break for a few years, then back in, after a few years, she quit again but was feeling restless at home so she got a job which is different from her previous job, which also means she will start at the bottom but get to learn new stuff and she doesn’t mind since she has the financial means to do so.
My mum was let go after her boss sold the company but like my dad said “her backside got nails, cannot sit at home one” , so instead of retiring, she went out to find a new job.
Depending on your industry, you might have to play some catch up after the break to get back on track with the newer technology etc.
  • Here’s sharing my experience: I took an unplanned and unintended career break due to illness, from approx 2016 to 2021. I can’t really put a finger down to the number of years I stopped work, cos I had stepped down my employment gradually from FTE to part-time, to self-employed, then freelance, until my health required me to stop working totally.
When my health got better in late 2020, I started reading up on how to re-enter the workforce/restart my career after a break. Honestly, despite all the hell that the pandemic caused, there were two good things that came out of it that benefitted me:
The SGUnited heavily subsidised training/skills/mid-career programmes that came with monthly training allowance. I personally took a 9-mths long SGUS prog in digital HR to brush up my rusty skills and make myself more relevant to today’s needs, and also got to upskill in the newer tech skill
WFH corporate jobs were previously rare in Sg, but companies were forced to make it happen and now some of them have realised the good in a hybrid workforce. Though it’s still too soon to say for sure, we will have to see how things go after Apr 26.
And remote/hybrid work arrangements were what I really needed so as to manage my energy output better to avoid crashes/relapses. I have since started working in Feb 2022, although in a lower role but getting to restart is of more importance.
In terms of finances I can’t really offer much advice given that I actually had to turn to family for help ultimately cos the medical expenses plus not working expended all of my savings. But the break also forced me to cut my monthly bills to only what is most essential, and I realised that a lot of the expenses that I thought were important or necessary may not actually be. So it’s important to rank your expenses I think, and perhaps as you go along your break, you can slowly cut away those things that you can do without.
Finally, to end this off, I can’t emphasise enough that HEALTH IS WEALTH. Please take care of yourselves first and foremost, be it physically, mentally, emotionally. No matter how much you slog for any company, or offer your time and money to any religion, or bend over backwards to cater to your friends/network/etc, when disaster hits, not all of them will be willing to stay with you to ride it out and give a helping hand. But I also don’t regret or blame the higher being for having to go through what I did, cos the “social cleansing” really helped me to now know who are my important people (honestly many of those whom I thought would be in this group ended up taking flight but it’s okay, good riddance to them).

PRIVATE UNI GRADUATE SAYS $3K STARTING SALARY IS SAME AS 10 YEARS AGO, TOO LOW

0

Private uni graduate salary 2022 Hi all, is being offered $3k for an office executive job low for a private uni graduate? With today’s market and inflation, eg. A salary of $3k – cpf= $2400 (take-home pay).

How to survive? Is it unreasonable to ask for a higher range of salary? Graduates 10 years ago are already earning this amount or more.

The older folks used to say going to uni would ensure you find a better paying job but it doesn’t seem to be the case maybe because everyone’s a uni graduate now.. STRESS.

A degree is not everything

Uni cert dun guarantee u a high salary. There is plenty of it outside. U dun wan, more ppl wan it…

The world is going into recession. Can you afford not to have a job?

You dun take, others who are more keen/hungry will. If you think you can wait for a better offer, that is.

Here are what netizens think:

  • Hi there, honestly if you’re a fresh graduate, just take what you can get. Firstly, build up your CPF! Secondly, beef up ur resume , work hard & get glowing testimonials for your next career move. Think of it as an investment in your future success. As you said, everyone has a degree nowadays.. so what makes you special? Unique Selling Point or USP.. Marketing 101. Perhaps you are good at comms, or even digital marketing. If you sit around waiting for the right offer, your USP is getting dusty with no one to discover them. Everybody starts somewhere. BTW, I raised 3 teen boys since 2016 as a single mum with my own household on a salary of less than 2k.. so its not impossible. I managed to upskill thru part-time poly & then with a pte uni.. all while putting in my best at work. It has paid off as I was recently promoted. If you are starting out with minimal commitment, you should be ok.Your attitude determines your altitude
  • My first take home pay was 800 dollars. In fact my army pay as an officer was more than my first job’s pay haha. And I worked my way up. There’s so much more than the starting pay to consider for a first job. Does it get you the exposure and experience you need? Does the work culture have any red flags? Are they an organization that has opportunities to upgrade your skills and diversify your qualifications? These will influence your career much more than your starting pay. All the best in your career path! Dont focus on the near term and lose sight of the potential for growth!
  • Time has totally changed and you are still comparing with 10 years ago?? Nowadays uni grad is everywhere, moreover you are just on a pte uni (unless your pte uni is super recognised and reputable).
  • $3k not bad leh.. i went overseas uni and starting pay was $1.8k leh last time.. you need to find somewhere to gain exp and work your way up ma..

WIFE SAYS NO LONGER ATTRACTED TO HER HUSBAND CAUSE HE HAS NO MORE MONEY

0

Not attracted to my husband anymore because of his financial habits.

My husband and I are really good together but sometimes I feel that we do not have similar goals and vision as me, in terms of finances & business.

We have a few children together and my goal has always been to give the children the best lives and attaining financial freedom for the family. I strongly believe that financial freedom is the key to living life to the fullest and it is extremely important to me. I know many people would say that money is not everything bla bla bla, but that’s just my personal belief.

Ok back to the story, I plan our finances long-term and do not like wasting it on unnecessary expenses. But my husband seems to be ok with these unnecessary expenses. He has never been good with finances, and he doesn’t have savings himself.

An example of unnecessary expenses, one of them is visiting expensive specialists every now and then for some small issue. The normal person would visit a GP and then get medications/advice from the GP and if conditions doesn’t improve, only then they’ll visit a specialist, right? But no, every small issue, he wants to go to a specialist.

Not only that, his father is sick and we have to help out with their medical bills. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I am perfectly fine with spending money to help his father get well.

Now the thing is that my MIL thinks my husband and I are some sultan or something. They cannot afford private hospitals themselves and yet they insist on going private hospitals and specialists instead of public hospitals that have subsidies. In the end, my husband and I have to help out with the crazy hospital and medical bills.

One example was a one night stay at a private hospital, costing up to $20k – perhaps there was some complications as well so i don’t know exactly how much the breakdown is. My parents in law DO NOT HAVE EVEN A SINGLE INSURANCE PLAN.

I am perfectly fine with paying because of course it’s our duty to look after my parents in law, but I want them to understand public hospitals are fine as well. I mean what is so bad about public hospitals?

Keep in mind we have kids to support, helpers to pay, my own parents to repay and I am also a working mother working on my growing business. Imagine having to juggle between all that.

My husband doesn’t say anything to encourage his parents to go to a public hospital to cut costs and even ENCOURAGES them to go to PRIVATE hospitals like he is damn rich and he loves to flex to his parents that I’m very capable etc. We even have to pay for their maid soon, but that’s a small matter because I really want his parents to be taken care of.

I mean yes we are quite well to do because my husband joined me in my business and it’s doing quite well, but we are not “UNLIMITED PRIVATE HOSPITAL STAYS UNLIMITED SPECIALIST VISITS WITHOUT INSURANCE” kind of wealthy yet.

My husband is a few years older than me and yet he doesn’t think long term financially. I mean at this rate with him, I feel like he will slow me down in terms of achieving my goals. Whenever i tell him to invest our money, he will be like “not the right time” bla bla bla. He just doesn’t have that kind of drive.

I’m torn because I don’t know how to tell him to understand my POV. I do not want to end up like his parents. They have really bad financial planning, and are victims to lifestyle inflation. Even though in the past they were making decent amount of money, they have little to none left now. Bad financial planning is why they are in such a plight now.

I WOULD NEVER EVER WANT TO BURDEN MY CHILDREN LIKE THAT EVER NEXT TIME. I would understand that they have so many commitments.

Oh and I can’t speak up because my husband and his parents has that kind of “I deserve the best private medical care if you can afford it and don’t pay for it, you’re bad” mindset. The father is very sick as well so it’s really not a good time to be talking about how expensive it is etc.

Sometimes I feel so guilty because I love my husband but I know deep down I could never be with man who is bad at finances and doesn’t spend time thinking of ways to grow our money with me. He does try, and i’m very grateful for it. However, after trying for awhile he’ll just give up or forget about it.

I used to always be sexually attracted to him but nowadays I don’t feel it anymore. Perhaps it’s because there are so many things going on and I honestly feel so tired. I’ve just gave birth recently and never really had a proper rest. Am I losing feelings? I feel soo tired when i’m around him recently.

I’m so obsessed with planning the family’s finances well because I really want to give my children a good life, that’s all.

Am I losing feelings or I just want to find someone else more suitable for me? ???? I don’t even know how I feel now. What will you do in my situation?

ATTACHED GIRL PLAYS AROUND WITH A MARRIED COLLEAGUE UNTIL GETS “BURN”

0

Not able to move on from my affair to a married colleague

Last year, I started having an affair with a married colleague who lives in Malaysia. However, due to covid, he was stuck in Sg. Being bored when my bf was busy, we started hanging out as friends.

But from friends, it turned into something more when he kiss me. I knew then I should start to distance myself but somehow I was drawn toward him. We are so different in the way we live, our first language, and our religion but I still like him. We did things unimaginable in the bus, playground and places by going third base. We even said “ily”.

One day, when we were in between arguments we made a pack that if this relationship can last 10 years we will forgo our past and be together but things became worst and I do not think it can ever be recovered.

Things started to spiral when covid restrictions were lifted. He was able to go back to Malaysia on weekends and by doing so I became more jealous, more demanding even when I was out with my bf.

He tried to gave in to me by adhering to my request but it just did not satisfy the attention that I needed from him. We started arguing weekly to daily and starting hanging out less and texting less. I know that this is for the better as I was soon to be married to my bf. However, I was not able to let this affair go.

Now, we only lunch together and occasionally go home together but we stop chatting as much when we do so. When things start to seem slightly friendlier and jokes are being thrown around, somehow he will stop talking as much and not letting the convo progress. I know this is for the best and I want to move on to concentrate on my own life. But all I do is think of him and when we talk face to face at times I feel like I am about to cry and I am not sure if he notice it. I wish to know what he is thinking and if he is able to give me another chance. But I also want to move on from this.

I am confused and want to move on from this but I cannot bring myself to do so and would like some advice on how to move on from this feeling and guilt.

Here are what netizens think:

  • For god sake, please end your relationship with your current bf. He doesn’t deserve a lady of your calibre.
  • Of course the first thing is to let go of your boyfriend. What were you thinking that you wanted to marry him, when all you thought about was the married man?
  • He had great time with you, he is not going to leave his family for you.. cut all ties, change job and move on to marry your bf(poor thing) or move on with your own life. Such relationship hardly has a good ending. Don’t deceive yourself and others too.

18 Y.O GIRL COMMITS LOAN SHARK HARASSMENT & RECORDS INCRIMINATING EVIDENCE

0

The 18-year-old girl was involved in running harassments jobs for a loan shark and she went to a door to collect debts and filmed a video to “leave a certificate”. As a result, she dug her own grave and was arrested and charged.

Shin Min Daily reported that the police issued a statement that they received a harassment case on the 15th of August, involving a flat at Block 837 Tampines Street 83.

The unit was splashed with thinner, and there was a debt collection document written in red marker pen, stating that “you owe money to pay, this is the last warning”, and left Ah Long’s phone number.

Police officers from Bedok Police Division unveiled the identity of an 18-year-old girl through investigation and access to police video footage. They arrested her on the 17th and seized a mobile phone.

It is reported that the girl shot the picture of the thinner splashed and sent it to the victim, which scared the victim to call the police immediately.

Trisha Amelynna Bte Muhammed Faizal, 18, was charged with one count under the Moneylenders Act.

According to the charge, she ran errands for a man named “Siao Kia” (Crazy Man), and came to the above-mentioned unit at about 5 o’clock in the evening on the 15th.

The prosecution pointed out that the girl believed that she was involved in many similar cases, and requested that she be remanded at the Bedok Police Station and be taken out to assist in the investigation. The case was approved by the judge and the case was held until the 26th.

If convicted, first-time offenders face a fine of between $5,000 and $50,000, as well as up to five years in prison and up to six strokes of the cane.

PM LEE – SECTION 377A WILL BE REPEALED, BUT GOVT WILL SAFEGUARD MAN-WOMAN MARRIAGE

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong spoke earlier this evening 21 August during his National Day Rally speech at the Institute of Technical Education Headquarters at Ang Mo Kio.

PM Lee announced during his speech that Section 377A of the Penal Code, which criminalises intercourse between men, will be repealed.

He added that however, the Government will continue to keep Singapore’s policies on family and marriages unchanged.

LGBTQ+ community better accepted now

PM Lee added that the LGBTQ+ community is better accepted in Singapore, especially among younger Singaporeans, even though we remain a conservative society.

He said that it is “timely to ask ourselves again the fundamental question” which is if intercourse between men in private should be a criminal offence.

He then concluded that a person’s gender preferences and orientation are a private and personal matter, and that intercourse between men should not be a criminal offence.

Marriages will be safeguarded and upheld

However, with that being said, PM Lee added that the government will uphold and safeguard the institution of marriage, where under the law, only marriages between a man and a woman are recognised in Singapore.

By and large, Singapore is a traditional society, with conservative social values.

We believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman, children should be born and raised within such families and that traditional family should form the basic building block of our society.

The government also has no intention of changing the definition of marriages, including the policies that rely upon the definitions, such as public housing, education, adoption, advertising and etcetera.

Need to stay united

Regardless of anybody’s views on Section 377A, PM Lee said that everyone has to accept that they can’t get everything because it is “simply not possible.

He emphasised the need for Singaporeans to “stay united as one people” as well as “maintain the mutual respect and trust that we have painstakingly built over the years.”

48 Y.O MAN KILLED IN JURONG EAST FIRE, USED TO REPAIR & GIVE AWAY APPLIANCES FOR FREE

0

The 48-year-old man who was killed in a fire that broke out at a Jurong East HDB flat on 16 August, had been living there with his sister.

According to Shin Min Daily News, the deceased is 48-year-old Huang Mingquan, who lived there with his older sister, 50-year-old Huang Xiumei.

The sibling’s other 43-year-old sister told SMDN that the older Ms Huang sells newspapers and makes less than $300 a month; while Mr Huang works odd jobs and often took in old appliances and recyclable items.

The 43-year-old also said that the deceased would repair the electrical appliances that he brought home and sell them to the neighbours for just $2 or $3, or even give them away sometimes.

Recap

[Final Update: Block 236 Jurong East Street 21]

At about 2.50am today (16 Aug), SCDF was alerted to a fire at the above-mentioned location.

Upon SCDF’s arrival, the fire was raging inside a unit on the 9th floor. Firefighters penetrated into the heavily smoke-logged unit to conduct firefighting operations. In addition, a Combined Platform Ladder was deployed at the rear of the block for external firefighting.

SCDF firefighters extinguished the fire using three water jets. As a result of the fire, the entire unit was affected by heat and smoke damage.

An occupant in the affected unit self evacuated before SCDF’s arrival.

Due to the close proximity of an adjacent unit, SCDF firefighters conducted forced entry into this unit and rescued three occupants.

A body was found in the affected unit and pronounced dead by an SCDF paramedic.

Damping down operations* are currently ongoing.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

*Damping down refers to the application of water to wet burnt surfaces immediately after a fire is put out. It is to prevent any potential rekindle of fire from the hot burnt surfaces.

COUPLE FINALLY GOT THEIR BTO FLAT AFTER 5 YEARS, BUT FOUND DENTS & MANY OTHER DEFECTS

A netizen, @home.sweet.home, shared how they finally got their 4-room BTO flat after waiting more than 5 years for it.

However, when they finally collected their keys to their new flat, they hired a defects team to inspect the unit and found a whole host of issues with the unit.

Here is what they said

*Update: Cost to hire @sgdefectscan ranges from $435-455 for 4rm flats. Dm them for price enquiries and quote my IG for special rates!*

Is it necessary to hire a professional team to check for defects?

It’s a YES for us! As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure. Rather than having issues cropping up later, it’s better to identify them early and get them rectified right at the beginning!

Honestly when we took a look around ourselves, we didn’t spot much defects or major flaws. But when the team from @sgdefectscan came in, they starting pasting soooo many stickers around and we were like whut?! We would never have been able to identify all these by ourselves (nor our ID), especially those that are not visible to the eye. E.g. hollow walls.

The whole rectification process by BSC dragged over ~5 weeks, which is painfully long, but I think its something necessary so we can start reno with a good foundation. Thankfully our unit didn’t have anything more major such as leaking pipes, uneven tiles or water ponding as these might take even longer to be rectified.

FYI for BTO units, defects should be rectified by BSC for free (technically you paid for the house la). But note that it should be done BEFORE renovation, because the “blaming game” sets in once different contractors come in for reno works.

What other kind of defects have you encountered? Share with me in the comments!

Netizens’ comments

  • Just report to HDB. New flats are under one year DLP
  • U better check the elec n plumbing
  • Is this a total brand new directly from HDB? After the defects , did the HDB repair all defects ?
  • Hahah I enjoyed watching this , it’s like spotting “what’s wrong with this picture” but it’s good that you are stringent now instead of discovering it later. When I went through my house last time, I will lay awake thinking “did I catch them all”

MAN’S DAUGHTER REFUSES TO COME HOME BECAUSE OF BAD SMELL FROM NEIGHBOUR’S CHICKENS

0

A netizen shared how his neighbour keeps live chickens in cages outside their first-floor HDB unit of Block 358 Yishu Rig Road.

The chickens are directly outside the netizen’s residents and the smells and sounds coming from the chickens are affecting his family, with the cages being outside his children;’s bedroom.

The netizen, Mr Suhardi, said that as a result of the foul smell from the chickens, one of his young daughters is choosing to stay at her grandmother’s home instead and doesn’t want to come home anymore.

Speaking to Stomp, Suhardi said: “This has affected my relationship with my family negatively. The owner has been feeding the chickens leftover food. This causes a very strong and unpleasant smell, especially combined with the chicken’s faeces. On top of that, the leftover food is attracting rats, especially during the night.”

Suhardi added that he has brought the issue up to the town council, the police and his MP; which resulted in the authorities telling the neighbours to move the cages, but the neighbour hasn’t done so.

A warning letter was also issued to the neighbour to remove the chickens by 1 May this year but Nee Soon Town Council said that the neighbour requested for alternative ways to keep the chickens.

NSTC said “Nee Soon Town Council believes in taking a compassionate approach towards solving issues for residents. As such, we are attempting mediation between the neighbours. We are also exploring alternative ways for the chicken owner to keep the chickens while also considering the living environment of the feedback provider.”
