NUS STUDENTS UNMASKED DURING ORIENTATION, MORE THAN 20 KENA COVID

A few students from the NUS Business School reportedly did not wear their masks while indoors during their freshman orientation programme from 15 to 17 June, according to a 19-year-old who spoke to Lianhe Zaobao.

More than 200 people participated in the activities and were divided into 18 groups, with the students mingling with each other daily from 8am to 10pm.

Although it is legally allowed for them to not wear a mask during outdoor activities, a large group of them didn’t wear one when they were indoors.

She was reportedly concerned when she saw some students failing to put their masks back on after the outdoor activities.

As a result, more than 20 of the students have since been infected with Covid.

Disinfected

The students were informed through Whatsapp that someone in another group had been infected with Covid but orientation activities were not suspended.

Group members of the infected student took ART tests while the lecture halls and seats were disinfected.

Following the culmination of the orientation camp, more than 20 students ended up testing positive for the coronavirus.

Disciplinary action

A spokesperson for NUS spoke to Zaobao that they have contacted the affected students to provide assistance.

They also added that orientation is an important part of campus life, but they take the safety of students seriously, and those who violate safety measures will face disciplinary action.

LANDLORD RAISED TENANT’S RENT BY $200 WHILE STILL IN MIDDLE OF CONTRACT

0

Can landlord raise rent in the middle of a contract?

She raised my rent by $200. She said that the main lord has raised her rent therefore she has to raise mine to keep her contract.

I do not want to burn this bridge, but I also cannot afford it. I am thinking of moving out. I am in the middle of a job transfer with a possibly lower pay.

I really regret my decision.

What can she do if I refuse to pay the extra? She might make my life hard? Or refuse to return the deposit once I leave? (I’m aware for the 2nd, small claims court may help but it is a tideous process)

Netizens’ comments

  • She cant do that. If your contract says $x for 1 year then it is $x for 1 year. She can only raise it after the contract ends.
  • It depends on what your contract says. If it says the landlord can raise rent midway through the term of the lease, then she can. If it doesn’t, she should not be able to.
  • The legality of the situation greatly depends on your answers to these questions.
    • Are you subletting illegally?
    • Sounds like you’re a subletter, do you have a contract with the main tenant?
    • Is she raising the price because the main contract with the actual landlord has ended thus the increase in price?
      • Not that I’m aware of, I don’t know what that means..
      • I have a contract with the property agent (her- the one who is raising the rent for me)
      • Yes correct.
      • So what does this mean? Is it illegal?
        • Your contract should not be with the property agent, it should be with the owner. The property agent is the one handling the owner’s business with you.
        • If they are raising the rent because your contract has ended, that is legal. They are setting a new price for a new contract period, not overiding your old contract that has ended. It’s not surprising cause rent prices have gone up in the last couple years. Time to find a new place.
          • My contract has not ended, it ends in december, but the property agent’s contract ends on 1st august. I’ll just find a new place and avoid contracts with agents in the future…

TUITION TEACHER WANTS LODGE POLICE AS PARENT DIDN’T PAY

Working in a side gig and need to lodge a police report.

I have been teaching private tuition to primary and secondary school kids since uni days, and continued doing so after graduation. Now I hold a full time job (in a trade house) and continue to teach tuition on the weekend.

I specifically asked my HR if there is a clause for “moonlighting” in our contract. She answered ” yes, but if your side job is not anything related to my FT job, she does not see a problem. Basically “do what you want, but don’t get caught”.

Recently, one of the parent (of my tutee’s) stopped replying to my texts. I’ve been waiting on payments for 4 months (Feb – June). Initially, she told me that her account had a problem and that she was still working with the bank. She claimed that she wasn’t able to withdraw nor make a successful transfer out of that account. In turn, I have asked her to transfer me from her husband’s account but she kept avoiding that topic. As such, I’m looking to lodge a police report but I am worried that I may “let the cat out of the bag” that I am moonlighting.

I am also not looking for a lawyer now as my outstanding tuition fees are $500+, minute in comparison to fees in engaging a lawyer.

1. Where do I seek help? Will police handle cases like these?

2. Although teaching has nothing to do with my current job, should I disclose it or will there be any repercussions with disclosing or not disclosing?

Here are what netizens think:

  • Moonlighting is illegal in contract, related to your job or not doesn’t matter, is still illegal. If your company finds out, you may be terminated. Just weigh which is more important, I think u should know the answer. What if your moonlighting was exposed and you got terminated, at the same time you still can’t get your money back, isn’t it worse? Just take it as a charity to help a kid in study.
  • Live n let live, since you been making money from them. Perhaps the parent facing financial cashflow problem. If u make police report, it only make this small issues into so big that it may implicate you too. Life is short.live n let live
  • Moonlighting is between u and your employer. If your employer finds out u are moonlighting n decides to pursue the matter, they can sue or such. But its difficult coz they usually need to prove that moonlighting affected your work. And if u didnt moonlight during working hrs, shld be fine. I think theres a fair bit of working class pple who moonlights for years. Usually employers will understand as long doesnt affect your quality of work.As for your tuition fee, u can lodge a police report. But not sure what police can do. Most probably they will advise u on the civil route.Alternatively, U can employ legal debt collectors. There are good ones that are professional n get the job done.

GIRL SAYS SHE HAS INTERACTION PROBLEMS AND CAN’T TALK TO MEN

0

I hate how scared I am to stand up for myself in even the simplest interactions with men

I just moved to a condo, and I’m subletting an apartment from a woman while I look for a place to stay long-term. Her roommate is a man, around her age (late 30s I think). He’s seemed nice for the most part and our paths don’t cross much.

Anyways, tonight he texted me an update about some toilet repairs, and that he noticed I’ve left the door unlocked a few times. I reply, apologizing for the door, and let him know I do lock it every time I leave (which is true!), and that maybe I’m not turning the key all the way.

He responded and essentially mansplained how locks work, and that there’s no “in between, only locked and unlocked.” Like… I effing know that you lan jiao lang!

I spent 10 long minutes in my notes app drafting a response where I reiterated that I was sorry and would double-check the door from now on, as well as a brief retort to let him know that I am in fact aware of how locks work.

But then my fearful urge to avoid all conflict kicked in and I just apologized a second time.

I feel so mad at myself because I know it’s just a silly stupid thing about a lock but I feel like any man would not spend this much time stressing over such a simple interaction or worry that sticking up for himself would make his roommate kick him out or make him uncomfortable in the future.

And I’m just angry because I hate dumbing myself down or toning down my anger and genuine response to bullshit mansplaining but I don’t know how to stop myself from getting these feelings of fear and anxiety.

GF SENDS EXPLICIT PHOTOS OF HERSELF TO OTHER GUYS, BF IS NOT HAPPY

0

My GF and I have officially been dating for 3 months but have been seriously talking for about 6 months.

We went to university together and knew of each other in school but never were super close. After uni, we didn’t talk for over 10+ years but recently reconnected over social media and became close then started dating long distance.

She has openly admitted multiple times that she has Whatsapp conversations with guys and sends pictures back and forth to these guys, most of them I knew and were friends with in uni.

She has admitted multiple times that in the past, flirting and even nudes were exchanged with these guys.

I am not controlling at all and don’t get jealous if she talks to males in general. I don’t have any reason to not trust her but she continues to have conversations with these guys even when they blatantly are still trying to flirt with her and ask for pictures no matter how innocent the pictures are.

My friend, who knows about the situation told me “congrats for having a chicken as a girlfriend?”

Am I wrong to think that it’s inappropriate for her to continue to entertain these conversations and that it’s disrespectful to our relationship that she doesn’t think it’s wrong because they are just “friends”?

BRO THROWS & BURNS SISTER’S STUFFED TOY AFTER SHE STEALS FROM HIM

0

My younger sister who is16 years old has been stealing from me since we were kids. She also has a habit of stealing from stores.

She has never had any boundaries on what she steals and doesn’t care how important what she steals from someone is and will openly admit to stealing as some kinda brag.

Me and her didn’t have a great childhood and we were neglected, so I’m sure part of her stealing habits stem from a need for attention and this is the way she’s learned to get it. Any time I have found out she’s yet again stolen from me, Ive gotten very annoyed.

Ive definitely gotten more angry then the situation has called for before. She’s stolen everything from me. Growing up she’d steal my birthday money, then sit there and agree with my parents when they accused me of losing my money and being irresponsible.

She admitted this to me a couple of years ago. She’s even gone as far as stealing a locket I got as an inheritance from my great grandmother when she passed before I got disowned from that half of the family.

She has never cared how any of this has hurt me. She’s actually laughed at me for being hurt over her stealing before. Anyways I think that’s enough context.

Here’s the situation: A little while ago a friend of mine stayed the night at my place and I stayed up on my sister’s double-decker bed because unfortunately the only place for him to sleep was my bed, and I didn’t feel it’s fair to make him sleep on my sister’s room nor did he feel comfortable with it.

I threw about half her stuffed animals off the bed so I could sleep and she has a specific order for it so I didn’t bother to put them back and left it for her since she was going to be upset I moved them anyways. I apologized and she got everything rearranged to her liking quickly and it was fine.

She forgave me. A little bit ago I told her he was going to come back and that I was going to sleep on her bunk again. She told me not to touch her stuffed animals. I told her that regardless of that I’m sleeping up there and wanted to let her know.

She said she didn’t care as long as I didn’t touch her stuffed animals. She then said she was still missing one, an owl named Oscar whose description I knew. I sat there for a second before simply saying, “the blue-ish owl that’s mine?”

She got this sheepish smile on her face and avoided eye contact, trying not to laugh, and nodded. She said she wanted to put him back with her other stuffed owls cause “they’re a family”. I was really upset over this, these two owls were a gift from my grandma several years ago and were some of the few good memories I had of this family.

She said I didn’t even notice he was gone so she should be allowed to keep him, an argument she always uses with everything. I flat told her that if I find him back on her bed at any point or find out that she found him and kept him that I will be taking all of her Stitch stuffed animals and burning or throwing them away.

Wrong of me of sweet revenge?

WOMAN INVITES FRIEND OVER FOR DINNER, BUT WANTS TO SPLIT THE GROCERY BILL

0

I’m 29 and friend, Bella (both in early 30s) have been friends for the last 5 years or so. We live 1hr away from each other but we see each other a few times a year.

Normally in a trip we discuss a menu, grocery shop/split bill and cook together.

The last 6 times we’ve hung out it’s been us driving to them since she was pregnant with her daughter. Now when I found out she was prego I was so excited. I contacted local mom friends in my community and got tons of clothes (maternity and baby), toys, books, diapers, even a few large baby furniture for them.

Literally a couple of carloads. I helped decorate and paint babies room (personally purchased several things). I went all out for the shower including a generous gift.

All these things are done in love, I don’t believe in strings attached to gifts but I do feel this is relevant to my judgment.

So. The issue. Last time I was set to visit.

Bella asked if my hubby could help her hubby in some heavy-duty outside labour. no big deal, he was happy to help. (But this would normally cost a lot for outside hire)

Ready to go. She sends me a message asking if we could split their grocery bill for the weekend. Mind you, we pay X amount in petrol, X amount for house/pet sitting. Plus a few other hoops to jump through just for a weekend. Also. EVERY time we visit we bring something, often food-wise. We are less financially stable than them at this juncture (if that matters)

Idk it just pissed me off. They’ve come for dinner before and I never would have even thought to ask for money! Anyone really. Come over I’ll feed you.

It’s not like it was steak and lobster either… Its just some spaghetti and leftovers.

I feel like I’ve done a lot for them and I’m not even worth a meal.

I told her sorry. I couldn’t afford that on top of everything else it costs just to visit.

She was pretty mad. So am I just being way too sensitive? What kind of friend is this?

MAN RATHER GO KTV THAN FINDING GF, EVERYDAY CAN CHANGE ‘FLAVOUR’

A man recently shared a story on Facebook on his reasons on why he is not getting a girlfriend despite having a good background and looking decent.

He stated that he has his reasons to seek alternative love from KTV instead of finding a proper one.

Here is the story:

My parents, my friends and my other relatives have always been asking me why I do not have a girlfriend.

The answer is short and also simple. I have not met the right one and I have been single for over 3 years.

I rather go to KTV and play different kinds of part-time girlfriends to satisfy my desire rather than to find a permanent girlfriend.

Why?

If I so desperately try to find one and don’t fit it will end up in sadness. I rather every day find different girls trying different delicacies no need to eat the same flavour every day.

Having a permanent girlfriend is not only a commitment of just time it is also a money and emotional investment.

I do not have to deal with mood swings and money issues. The KTV girl got mood swings? I changed to another girl. I don’t have money? I stay at home.

No need to worry if the girl suddenly needs me or what. It’s not commitment issues, I am in mid-20s, and the female friends around me are of the same age.

I can say I matured faster than them, as girls around my age are more bothered about superficial stuff like buying branded or being an Insta-Ho.

Although friends have been scolding me saying it’s unhealthy, seeing my friends always coming to me to drink beer after quarrel with their girlfriend. That is definitely more unhealthy.

I see a lot of guys desperate to get a girlfriend out there, but those who eventually get one are always not truly happy.

Most of them have two kinds of problems:

They find a foreign girlfriend then next comes the money issue

They find a local girlfriend than in later stages of the relationship they go find “lup sup” services. (This is true, I have a friend who is known as “Holy man” in his 30s and later on discovered the “fun” at a later age who eventually divorced.)

Not only am I playing the KTV life early I am also waiting for a more mature person.

Am I wrong to say this?

GIRLS CHEAT ON BF WITH MARRIED NEIGHBOUR, SAYS “BEST S IN HER LIFE”

0

S-ual tension with my married neighbour, but I live with my BF

My long-term boyfriend (10+ years) and I just moved to a new estate recently. Everyone in our apartment complex is extremely nice, and we all hang out together at nights. I’m 31, my boyfriend is 33.

So one of our new neighbours [who is in his 40’s(H)] and I recently discovered that we’re extremely attracted to each other. His wife was on holidays back to Malaysia to visit her family during this period.

Here’s the story:

Upon meeting H, my BF (P) and I thought he seemed like a really nice, friendly guy. I also thought he was attractive, but didn’t really pay much attention, as I love P. So one night, P and his friend invited us to go out to to drink since restrictions were off.

I volunteered as to drive home, so I remained sober while P got really drunk. When we got home P goes inside and passes out. But I wasn’t tired so I stayed up with Z. We had a couple of drinks. One thing led to another and before I know it, I’m pretty tipsy, and the sun is about to come up. So Z and I are sitting (alone) in the balcony watching the sunrise and having a few laughs.

This is when a bunch of birds came outside being loud. So Z and I went into his room and sat on the bed with the aircon on.

We’re both still feeling the effects of alcohol, and are pretty tired, so when I mentioned my leg wouldn’t stop shaking, and when he then put his hand it, I didn’t tell him not to.

Part of me hoped it was innocent and didn’t want to make a fool of myself. But then he kept his hand there, began squeezing and very effectively turned me on. At this point I stood up, leaned over and kissed him.

Really just as a “thank you for the compliment, but I can’t do this”. There was a brief moment of close contact as he stood up, where I had to again struggle to step away saying that P was too good to me and that doing anything with Z would be selfish. Unfortunately, the flesh was willing and we had what I can say was the best S in my life. After that we had a smoke and while standing up, he pulled me back into his house where he kissed the back of my neck, put his hands on my stomach while saying really S things in my ear and even reached down the front of my jeans for a moment before I could pull myself away.

At this point I told him that I couldn’t do anything with him, and that I needed to just go to bed. So I walked back over to my place, and went to sleep. The next night however, P and I walked out on the corridor for a smoke and Z was already outside. P, not knowing anything about what went on, sat down and started a conversation with them.

Time goes by and after partying a little too much again, P decides to go to bed again. Z and I talk, make sure we’re both cool with each other, and try to enjoy the rest of the night as friends. However, it didn’t take long for me to start thinking about what had happened, and for him to be just drunk enough to whisper something really S when no one else could hear.

I went to bed just to keep me away from temptation.

We both agree that it would be a terrible idea to sleep together again. And I honestly love P with all my heart. My body just can’t stop feeling Z’s hands, or smelling his scent, and hearing his whispers. I can’t stop thinking about how his hands and lips felt eager to touch every bit of my skin.

P is awesome in bed, but likes S less often than I do, and we’re just so…comfortable with each other. Z felt new and dangerous. I can’t keep from feeling excitement when I think about him. It doesn’t help that I have known P since we were bunk mates in BMT and we have been through thick and thin and also H’s wife will be devastated if she finds out about us.

How can I get him out of my head? Or would I be able to live with myself if I slept with him again?

MASSIVE CROWDS GATHERED TO LISTEN TO BUSKER SING OUTSIDE THE CATHAY

32-year-old Jeff Ng, a busker performing at the open area outside The Cathay every Saturday, saw massive crowds gathering to watch him perform on 25 June.

The impressive turnout could easily rival the attendance numbers of some mainstream music artistes in the industry today.

Videos of the crowd waving the flashlights on their phones along to Ng’s music went viral across all social media platforms. Ng earned the nickname “The Cathay Busker” for his performances and huge turnout.

He started busking in 2018 but took a break during a pandemic, before starting busking again last month at The Cathay.

His virality has since garnered him 43.2k followers on Instagram and almost 25,000 followers on TikTok, catapulting him into a star.

Some of the audiences spoke to CNA, including a trio of friends; Rebecca Choo, Issac Kua and Nicole Lee, said that Ng’s performance felt like a concert, and that it was “really quite fun”.

The two girls said that they have been following Ng’s videos on TikTok for about 3 weeks and showed up to watch him perform in person.
