Safuan Kamarodin, 39-years-old, pleaded guilty yesterday to 4 charges; including rioting, and leaving Singapore from an unauthorised departure point.
He had assaulted a father and son at East Coast Lagoon Food Village, before fleeing Singapore to Batam for 9 months to avoid arrest.
He is expected to be sentenced next month.
What happened?
Safuan was with 8 other friends on 11 April 2021 when they got into a fight with a father and son duo at East Coast Lagoon Food Village after midnight.
The conflict occurred because Safuan’s friend, Nur Faisal Shan Hishamuddin Shan (otherwise known as Bhai), 34-years-old, had bumped into another man at the male toilet entrance.
Bhai then confronted the 51-year-old man, and the confrontation escalated with Bhai’s friends showing up to back him up.
Safuan then initiated the first blow and when the man fell onto the floor, the group attacked him by punching and kicking him for 20 seconds.
The victim then managed to get up and ran away.
The victim’s 20-year-old son and the rest of the man’s family were leaving the hawker centre afterwards and saw the group loitering around the area where they beat up his father, he then confronted the group about the attack.
The group then attacked the son by punching and kicking him, and he then ran away, with the group continuing to give chase, and even throwing a coconut at him.
Safuan attempted to throw a beer bottle at the 20-year-old but missed, and the group also chased the father through the hawker centre.
The father then fell down on the ground and Safuan then kicked him.
Throughout the encounters, the victims only tried to defend themselves and never retaliated, said the prosecution in court.
The police soon arrived and the victims were then conveyed to the hospital, where they were found to have suffered abrasions on their bodies.
Bhai is currently still at large and on the run.
2 months after the attack, Safuan made the decision to flee Singapore and avoid being detected and arrested.
He had paid someone $500 to arrange for his illegal departure from Singapore and took a boat from Tuas to Batam, staying there for 9 months.
He was earlier deported by the Indonesian authorities on 29 March.
Safuan was wanted by the police for investigations, and also had a warrant of arrest issued against him for his failure to show up at a court hearing for earlier, unrelated driving offences.
