13 ALLEGEDLY INVOLVED IN OCBC PHISHING SCAMS ARRESTED

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) said in a statement today evening (20 Feb) that they have arrested 13 people aged between 19 to 22 for their alleged involvement in the series of OCBC Phishing Scams.

Of the 13 people, nine are men and four are women.

SPF officers have been watching the scam situation closely since it began in December 2021.

After full on investigations and questioning, the 13 people who the SPF believe are involved in the scams had their identities unfolded.

Operation mounted on 16 and 17 Feb

In an operation mounted on the 16 and 17 of February 2022 held by the SPF officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the 13 of them were rounded up.

Evidence believed to be used in the crimes were seized and they include:

Different mobile devices
Bank cards
SIM cards
$2,760 in Cash
Two Rolex watches with a combined value of $35,600

Charged in court

Subsequently on 18 Feb 2022, seven of the male suspects were charged in court for their alleged role in giving assistance to others to keep the proceeds from their crimes.

The penalties for the charges against them are a jail term of not more than 10 years, a fine of not more than $500,000 or both together.

These seven men are kept in remand for further investigations by SPF officers.

Investigations are still in progress for the remaining six suspects.

Public advisory

SPF has also advised the public to remain vigilant at all times and not to let third parties use their own bank accounts or phone lines as they will also be implicated into the crime should their bank accounts or lines be used in criminal activities.

They also said that all efforts will be expended by the SPF to establish the identities of anyone involved in scamming others and once they are caught, they will be dealt with firmly and lawfully.

15,283 NEW CASES IN SINGAPORE, 4 FATALITIES

The Ministry of Health (MOH) has reported a total of 15,283 new cases on 20th February 2022 with 4 fatalities.

15,071 are local and 212 are imported cases.

The weekly growth rate is 1.59 (Yesterday 1.54)

Case details

Of the 15,283 new cases, 12,169 cases are tested positive through ART of which 12,113 are local and 56 are imported.

3,114 cases were confirmed after testing with PCR with 2,958 local cases and 156 imported cases.

MOH reported 4 death cases bringing to death toll to 945.

Other data:

There are currently 1,523 patients in the hospital with 195 of them requiring oxygen and 39 are in the ICU.

94% of Singapore’s population has completed the vaccination program.

66% of Singapore’s population has received booster shots.

Statistics

In total Singapore has recorded 582,638 COVID-19 cases from the start of the coronavirus.

The death toll is 945.

In the last 28 days, there were 262,729 amount of cases with 99.7% of them with no or mild symptoms, 0.2% required oxygen supplementation, 0.04% is in the ICU, 0.03% died.

PRC SCAMMER WHATSAPP PHOTO OF HANDSOME MAN SAYS FRIEND OF WANG AH YI

After befriending an attractive person (who is usually foreign) online, he or she tells a tale about falling into trouble or hard times. The scammer persists with the story to gain their victim’s trust and adoration, then asks for money as proof of love. Once the money is transferred, the scammer disappears.

A local woman received a message from an unknown number claiming to be a handsome guy introduced by “Wang Ah Yi” which often refers to a “rich old lady who takes care of young guy” in Chinese slang.

This kind of love scam is common and often many people who are desperate falls victims to such crimes.

The woman then continues to troll the guy saying that she don’t understand Chinese and replies to the man in Malay.

The man then stops texting afterwards.

95 Y.O QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 TESTS POSTIVE FOR COVID-19

According to an article by BBC News, the Queen of UK, Queen Elizabeth 2 has tested positive for Covid-19 and is currently experiencing symptoms which was described as ‘mild and cold-like’.

It was first reported that her son, Prince Charles, had contracted the virus and she had met him two days before he was confirmed positive on 10 Feb 2022.

Expected to resume duties

Even so, she is expected to resume light duties at Windsor in the coming week.

The Queen had taken her first dose of the vaccine in January of 2021 and had also received follow up jabs after her first dose.

She is expected to continue receiving medical attention and also follow the proper pandemic guidelines.

A few in Windsor castle had also contracted virus

According to the BBC News article, there are also a number of people in Windsor Castle who had contracted the virus and tested positive thereafter.

Windsor Castle is where the Queen resides in.

Britain’s Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, had also tweeted that he wished the Queen a speedy recovery and get back in good health.

JJ LIN SUING WEIBO USER FOR ACCUSING HIM OF DRUG USE AND OTHERS

A netizen who uses Weibo has been sued for defamation by Singaporean Mandopop singer, Lin Jun Jie, also known affectionately to fans as JJ Lin.

Statement by Law Firm representing JJ Lin

JJ Lin’s company, JFJ Productions, has engaged the services of Shanghainese law firm, ‘Shanghai Jiu Ze Law Firm’ in this defamation lawsuit.

In a statement put up by the law firm on Weibo, it states that an online user by the name of Xie Minghao had tarnished the reputation of JJ Lin by accusing him of allegations which are downright fake and legal proceedings are currently halted because Xie has also been detained for other criminal issues.

The defamation trial against Xie will continue once he is released.

They also stated that there are still laws governing the internet and what an individual publishes or says on the internet can be used against them.

Accused by Xie of drug use and many other allegations

Xie had earlier in August 2021 accused JJ Lin and Wilbur Pan of drug use, influencing others to consume drugs, evading taxes and also forcible violation activities.

He had earlier said that he was an actor but no one knew who he was.

On his Weibo page, he had said that he have strong evidence against the deeds by JJ and Pan and even asked authorities to conduct drug tests on both JJ and Pan.

He also said that if his allegations against the both of them turn out to be force, he will accept any legal actions taken against him and on top of that he also asked the media to report on both of their deeds.

MOH’S HEALTHCARE CORPS LOOKING FOR MANPOWER URGENTLY AS CASES RISE

The Singapore Healthcare Corps (SHC) through the Ministry of Health (MOH) have put up a call for individuals previously registered with the SHC to fulfill manpower requirements as cases continue to rise in the current ongoing pandemic.

In a text message sent out by MOH, they said:

“Due to rising Covid-19 cases, we urgently require manpower to support the ramp-up of Covid-19 operations.”

The SHC was first started up to provide support for healthcare professionals in operational needs relating to the pandemic as well as community care.

Individuals regardless of their level of experience in healthcare are welcomed by the SHC and those that are selected would be given training before they are deployed out in their roles.

Salaried contract positions available

There will also be contract positions offered to individuals and individuals who take up these positions would be given a salary.

Some of the roles required of these contract positions are:

Management of those tested positive in hospitals and community care facilities
Backfill manpower in business-as-usual settings

These roles would be available from February 2022.

As part of the process for MOH to select who they want to hire, applicants might have to go for a briefing session.

There are also certain roles which require the individual to have healthcare training previously and some roles will require the individual to hold a valid practising certificate from the relevant professional boards.

In the application from where individuals who are interested have to fill up, questions like background, healthcare experience, different types of statuses of vaccination, availability and preferred locations were asked.

TREES UPROOTED AT CCK CRESCENT AFTER STORM THIS AFTERNOON

A netizen has written a post with photos and uploaded it into social media showing the aftermath of the thundery showers which happened earlier this afternoon across most parts of the country.

In the pictures that the netizen has posted, trees were seen being uprooted from the grass patches that the trees were initially planted on and even the huge amounts of grass from the grass patches were ripped off from the ground

The place where the photos were taken from appears to be at Choa Chu Kang Crescent, as seen from the road signs in the pictures uploaded by the netizen.

Hopefully, no one is injured as there could have been human crowds in that area due to it being near a cross junction and there is also a 7-11 convenience store in the vicinity.

Expect more thundery showers to come

Meanwhile, it was reported in an article by CNA that thundery showers will continue throughout the remainder of February.

Singaporeans can expect these showers which will last for short durations in the afternoon most of the days with these thundery showers expected to carry on into the evening on some of the days.

Accompanying these thundery showers would be strong winds which will come from the north east region.

The overall forecast of rain in February is also expected to be above average in most parts of the country.

The maximum temperatures that could be reached daily are also expected to be at 34 degree Celsius on a few of these days and on average, the daily temperature will most likely be between 23 degree Celsius to 33 degree Celsius.

During the first half of February, it has already been reported that thundery showers mostly started in the late afternoon to evening on most of the days.

It appears that the video call fake police scammers are still active and as annoying as ever, a video was shared by a netizen after he was seen wasting the time of scammers and being sarcastic to them.

In the first part of the video a man was told to show his NRIC and the man told the scammer to show him his as well, while the scammer was holding on to a fake Police card.

The 2nd part of the videos shows a man acting scare of the fake Police.

The Police would like to emphasise that the Police will not instruct members of the public to transfer money to designated bank accounts for investigations. Police officers will also not identify themselves with the SPF warrant card on online platforms.

Minister Chan Chun Sing recently shared a post and uploaded it onto his Facebook page with regards to a conversation he had with a student when visiting a school.

The conversation is of a light-hearted nature and is actually pretty funny, given how the Minister had misinterpreted the words of the student.

The student had shared with the Minister that his CCA is S.T.E.M club when the Minister asked him which CCA did he join.

On hearing the reply, Minister Chan mistook ‘S.T.E.M’ as ‘Stamps’ and proceeded to have a conversation about stamps with the student, sharing that he used to collect stamps too and also writes to pen pals.

He also asked the student if the student also collect stamps, from which countries are his stamp collection from and also asked if the student writes letters and have pen pals.

This called the student by surprise who remained in stun silence to the Minister’s reply before his classmates helped him to explain to the Minister by spelling out ‘S.T.E.M’.

This was when Minister Chan realised that he had misinterpreted the boy’s words earlier and finally understood that S.T.E.M represents Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Minister Chan also shared that through this episode, he learnt that times have changed.

He says that in the past, we all learn our ABCs with A for Apple, B for Boy and so on but nowadays to the young generation, it is A for Apple (Tech Company), B for Beta and so on.
