STARHUB, SINGTEL AND M1 USERS REPORT INTERNET DISRUPTIONS ON CNY

Internet users were reporting issues with internet connectivity earlier today (1 February).

According to data derived from DownDetector (as well as firsthand experience), there were more than 3,000 reports of outages from Singtel users at around 6 to 7pm, about 2,200 reports of outages from Starhub users at around 7pm, and more than 11,000 reports of outages from M1 users at around 6pm.

Locations affected by the disruption include Jurong West, Marsiling, Woodlands, Sembawang, Buangkok, Tanjong Pagar, Tampines, Sengkang.

M1 issued public statement

M1 was the first telco to issue a public statement on Facebook, they said:

[First notice] 7:10pm:

M1 has received reports that some customers may be experiencing difficulties in accessing fixed broadband services.

We are currently investigating and rectifying the issue.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused and will provide more updates as soon as possible.

Issues rectified

M1 subsequently updated their statement on Facebook:

[Final notice] 8:50pm:

We have restored broadband services and our engineers will continue to monitor the situation.

For customers who are still experiencing difficulty connecting to network, please reboot your router.

We apologise for the inconvenience caused.

Tour De France cyclist, one of the most hated creatures that can be found all over the roads of Singapore.

The world can’t stop them, covid-19 can’t stop them, getting horn won’t stop them. The dogs can.

A cyclist was seen getting chased by two black dogs after cycling in the middle of the road.

Even the dogs want them to stay away from the road.

MAN OBSESSED WITH WOMAN WHO CHATTED WITH HIM, MOLESTS HER IN LIFT

Tia Sin Kwang, 56, became obsessed with a 38-year-old woman who made small talk with him from time to time, thinking that she loved him, and trapped her inside a lift and molested her after stalking her.

He pleaded guilty to one count of molest, with one other count of stalking being taken into consideration during his sentencing.

He was sentenced on 28 January to 3.5 years in prison, and because he can’t be caned due to being above 50, he is serving an extra 3 months in prison in lieu of the caning.

The victim cannot be identified due to a court order.

What happened?

Tia worked with the victim in the same building as well as living in the same neighbourhood and they would make small talk when they saw each other in the neighbourhood or at the canteen of their office, but they were not friends.

In early 2021, Tia saw the victim out in the neighbourhood with her daughter and asked her if she wanted some tracing books for her daughter, to which the woman agreed and they then exchanged mobile numbers.

Tia met up with the victim on a few occasions to pass her the tracing books. On one of the occasions, he followed her in the lift to her floor under the guise of escorting her, and he found out which floor she lived on.

Tia started stalking the victim on 12 May 2021, sending her messages repeatedly asking her if she loved him, which she rejected.

The man also followed the victim while she was with her daughter under the block, as well as standing outside her home a few times.

On 6 August 2021, the victim had left her home to go to work and when she entered the lift, Tia followed suit and entered quickly.

Tia then placed his right hand on her right shoulder as she was pressing the lift buttons, and she then pushed his arm away. Undeterred, he placed his hand on the woman’s back.

He then cornered her in the lift as the woman tried to avoid him by facing the lift. Tia then molested her as she tried to prevent him from touching her by crouching but failed.

Followed her all the way to bus interchange

The lift then stopped and another person entered, to which Tia then stopped his actions. The victim then hurriedly left the lift on the first floor and boarded the bus, as Tia continued to follow her and sat beside her inside the bus, to which the woman then changed her seat.

The victim then alighted at Bukit Merah bus interchange to take another bus, as Tia then stood beside her as she waited and took out his mobile phone, showing the victim a photo of herself on it.

Tia was showing her a photo of her which she uploaded onto Facebook back in May 2021 and it was the 2nd time Tia had come up to the woman and showed her the photo. (The victim had set her profile to private after the first incident)

The woman then moved away from Tia as she felt disgusted but Tia continued to follow her.

He eventually gave up after she boarded the bus.

S’PORE CLASSIFIED AS “LEVEL 4 – VERY HIGH LEVEL OF COVID” BY US CDC

S’PORE CLASSIFIED AS “LEVEL 4 – VERY HIGH LEVEL OF COVID” BY US CDC

The United States’ Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has classified Singapore’s Travel Health Notice to “Level 4: Very High Level of Covid-19”, on 31 January.

The US also advised their people not to travel to Singapore, as Singapore joins other countries such as Mexico, Brazil, Ecuador, the Philippines and Paraguay in the list, according to Reuters.

The US CDC classified close to 130 countries to Level 4, citing a country’s incidence rate as one of their indicators.

Previously classified as “unknown”

Singapore was previously classified as “unknown” on 4 January earlier this year, with their previous advisory suggesting against travel to Singapore.

Singapore’s Minister of Health Ong Ye Kung then responded on 5 January by saying “To be clear, we know our situation very well,” and added that the Ministry of Health will provide the necessary data to the US CDC and that they were in communication with the US embassy.

The US CDC then said on 6 January that they will update their Travel Health Notice for Singapore accordingly.

Protocol 2

Ong announced on 21 January that Singapore would record a higher number of infections after the authorities decided to include Protocol 2 cases in their updates.

Infected persons who are either well or assessed to have a mild condition are referred to Protocol 2, where they can self-isolate at home.

The numbers for Protocol 2 were previously not included in the daily case numbers.

Yahoo gave the movie 1 out 5 stars for lack of story focus, full of advertisements in the movie, and calls it a “disappointment”.

8Days called his movies “amateurish” and that the movie is going downhill.

Mothership calls it “120 mins of advertisement with a hint of the movie.”

Epic reviewers say “The movie gave me cancer“

My Grandfather smoked his whole life.

I was about 10 years old when my mother said to him, “If you ever want to see your grandchildren graduate, you have to stop immediately.”

Tears welled up in his eyes when he realized what exactly was at stake. He gave it up immediately. Three years later he died of lung cancer.

It was really sad and destroyed me. My mother said to me- ‘Don’t ever smoke. Please don’t put your family through what your Grandfather put us through.”

I agreed. All through my adulthood, I have never touched a cigarette.

I must say, I feel a very slight sense of regret for never having done it, because the movie gave me cancer anyway.

FAKE POLICE SCAMMERS THREATENS MAN “I’ll CATCH YOU IN 5 MINS”.

A person did Whatsapp video call today afternoon and claimed that he is calling from Singapore Police Force, showing the huge banner behind him. I first thought it was genuine.

But when he said my bank complained about not updating my IC num, it created a doubt. He said if I don show him my Ic, he will block my card and account. I understood the whole story and asked him to do so and warned him if he does this kind of Scam call again. But this was not enough, he had guts to call me back within 5 mins and said “I’ll catch you in 5 mins”. Be prepared.

These calls are really frustrating and threatening. I am sure they were not operating from Singapore. The accent was European and Ph num seems to be from Pakistan. 

Beware and ignore such phone calls!

2nd Impersonation scam story:

Scammer called me pretending to be my cousin but dont say name but made you say yours. The problem is he describe a scenario similar to my real cousin situation having open new bizz and lost wallet and phone needing some help to pay off some vendor. one follow by another and another. I lost 20k in 2 TRANSACTIONS before getting suspicious. I could have just asked my actual cousin to verify! 

Please be alert!

3rd Story:

I received a call, claiming to be from ‘Singtel technical team’, it detected unusual internet usage from foreign ip address.

Asked whether internet slow recently, ask how many devices connected to the internet, ask to log in usage personal laptop, key in ctrl r, cmd, ask to verify a verification code only singtel can provide. show that there are foreign ip address found and using your internet. ask to key in gg.gg/singtel01 (Note: Phishing site. Do NOT click) but ended up show nothing and found suspicious then hang up the call.

COVID TO BE DECLARED AN ENDEMIC BY THE END OF THE YEAR IN THAILAND

Thailand’s Public Health Ministry announced that they will be planning to declare Covid-19 an endemic disease by the end of the year.

Kiattiphum Wongrajit, the permanent secretary of health, made the announcement following a meeting of the country’s National Communicable Disease Committee last week.

Own criteria

Kiattiphum said that they are planning to declare the endemic on their own academically acceptable criteria of no more than 10,000 cases per day, a fatality rate not exceeding 0.1% and a fully vaccinated percentage of 80% for those at risk.

Kiattiphum said that after 2 years, trends have shown that the disease is under control and not too severe.

He said:

“In principle, the disease could spread but is not severe. The fatality rate is acceptable. There can be waves of the disease. But importantly, people must have adequate immunity. People must be vaccinated, and treatment systems efficient.”

“After these criteria have been met for a while, this disease can be declared endemic in Thailand.”

“When the situation is promising and the criteria fulfilled, the ministry will make an announcement.”

Kattiphum also added that the government will be taking action to hasten the process rather than wait for the coronavirus to naturally become an endemic by itself.

71 Y.O JAILED: CHEATED CPF BOARD TO GET MONTHLY PAYOUTS FOR 10 YEARS

An elderly man managed to cheat Central Provident Fund (CPF) Board into paying him monthly payouts after convincing the CPF board that the elderly man and his wife is earning only $1,000 a month.

A total of $86,000 was disbursed to 71-year-old Tan Kah Poh and 70-year-old Toh Poh Choo in the course of 10 years.

Tan wanted to take advantage of a grant and submitted CPF payments from a company, which indicated that Toh was employed receiving a $1,000 salary a month.

STOMP reported that the company was not active and they make use of the CPF records to be eligible for the CPF top-ups.

Tan wanted to double the monthly payouts and started submitting his own name as well.

This goes on for over a decade and Tan was finally caught.

He was sentenced to 18 weeks in jail.

Malaysia’s Minister of Health, Khairy Jamaluddin, said that the government will be banning the sale of cigarettes and tobacco (including vaporisers and e-cigarettes) for those who are born after 2005, according to Free Malaysia Today.

Khairy was speaking at the World Health Organisation’s executive board meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland.

He posted a snippet of his speech onto Twitter, calling the move a “generation endgame to smoking” and is intending to pass the legislation later this year.

Khairy added that he believes this will help to prevent and control non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, lung cancer and hypertension.

This move is reminiscent of New Zealand’s decision to eventually ban the sale of tobacco for people who are born after 2008.

The response to Khairy’s announcement was met with generally positive reception, with his tweet garnering about 354.4k views, 3,472 likes and 1,984 retweets.

Uncontrollable black market

However, the Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI) said that the tobacco ban would affect businesses, while also predicting an “uncontrollable black market” for tobacco products, according to The Star.

MICCI said that the black market controls a 57% share of the tobacco market, with 6 out of 10 packets of cigarettes sold in Malaysia, coming from illegal sources.

$120,000 LOST TO SCAMMERS, ‘DEBIT CARD ISSUE’ SCAM: POLICE

The Singapore Police Force recently issued an alert to warn the members of the public against a scam SMS.

The Police said that the message is currently circulating online and at least 18 p[people had become victims of the scam. So far, $120,000 has been lost to scammers due to this scam.

How it works?

The victims would received an SMS/message and inform them that they are required to dial a number as there is an “issue” with their debit card.

The call will usually “bank account verification” which will ask for details such as card numbers and one-time passwords. The scammers will trick the victims into telling them the sensitive details in order to proceed “solving” their debit card issues.

By then it would be too late, once the scammers have the details of the cards they would be able to utilise the card and perform transactions to transfer the money away.

For more information on scams, members of the public can visit www.scamalert.sg or call the Anti-Scam Hotline at 1800-722-6688.

Prevention

The public is advised to take the following precautions when they receive unsolicited calls via phone or messaging applications:

  1. Ignore the instructions. No government agency will obtain personal information through a telephone call;
  2. Never disclose your personal or Internet banking details, including NRIC, NRIC issue date and OTP to anyone;
  3. Always verify the authenticity of the information by contacting the relevant government agencies through their official hotline; and
  4. Report any fraudulent transactions to your bank immediately.

Anyone with information on such scams may call the Police Hotline at 1800-255-0000 or submit information online at www.police.gov.sg/iwitness. All information will be kept strictly confidential.
