MONEYLENDER HARASSMENT AT HOUGANG, POLICE APPEALS FOR INFO

The Police are looking for the woman shown in the following picture to assist with investigations into a case of harassment by an unlicensed moneylender.

The incident was reported at Block 637 Hougang Avenue 8 on 9 January 2022.

Anyone with information is requested to call the Police Hotline at 1800-255-0000 or submit information online at www.police.gov.sg/iwitness.

All information will be kept strictly confidential.

Penalties:

For first-time offenders, the offence of loanshark harassment carries a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, with mandatory imprisonment of up to five years, and mandatory caning of up to six strokes.

Zero Tolerance

The Police have zero tolerance for loanshark harassment activities. Those who deliberately vandalise properties, cause annoyance, or disrupt public safety, peace and security, will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.

Members of the public are advised to stay away from loansharks and not to work with or assist the loansharks in any way. Members of the public can call the Police at ‘999’ or the X-Ah Long hotline at 1800-924-5664 if they suspect or know of anyone who could be involved in loansharking activities.

A netizen has taken to social media to voice his/her displeasure at the neighbour who is staying on the floor above their unit because of them hanging out their wet laundry without making it drier.

This has caused the netizen’s laundry who is also hanging out to dry to be wet from the dripping water.

The netizen has also tried to reach out to the neighbour via Facebook only for the neighbour to come up with some excuse to counter argue the netizen’s claims.

Message from netizen to neighbour

The netizen has included a screenshot of his/her reaching out to their neighbour on the issue and it reads:

“Hi, please assist to wring your wet laundry before hanging in common area. Everyone has cleaned clothes to hang to dry. Appreciate your kindness and understanding.”

While that seems like a fair and reasonable request, the netizen’s neighbour seemed to have other ideas and pushed the blame to the authorities and also telling the netizen that they also have ‘no choice’.

Another screenshot showing the neighbour’s reply to the netizen is also seen inside the post and it reads:

“We tried to machine wash the laundry whenever possible. However, there are laundry that can only be hand washed and no matter how you wrung them, some are still dripping a little. We have escalated this wet hanging area issue. If the laundry ledge is constructed too short and is not serving it’s intent to prevent minor drips from affecting laundry below, then it’s not useful. As mentioned, we have escalated this issue. *censored messages* it is impossible to wrung completely dry before hanging.”

“A tyrant? or being self-entitled or inconsiderate? it is not surprising that they will never hang their hand washed clothes with “minor drips” indoor.

While It is definitely a personal choice if they do not wring their handwashed clothes, it is so ungracious & a total disregard of others when hanging the dripping laundry at the common area.”

A guy shared a story of how he had used a mask that was lying around on his table to wipe away some ‘cream’ after he was done and then put it inside his jacket.

He then went to work one day and while he was walking to the train station remembered that he did not wear a mask and innocently took out the mask from his jacket to wear.

Here is the story

“Alright. This story happened about 5 months ago.

We all have this moment where we’re going to think about some stuff then the next second we are playing with the joystick.

Halfway through you realise you used up all your toilet paper/tissue in your room. That is where I decided to adapt, improvise and overcome the situation.

I see an old mask just lying there on my desk and decide its destiny is to be the graveyard for my unborn children.

The deed is done and the mask actually did an impressive job collecting the ‘cream’, not soggy or anything.

My family was all in the living room and I didn’t want walk out to throw the mask in the toilet.

That is when I crumbled the mask up and put it in the pocket of my jacket, to throw it away discreetly later.

I forgot about it and a week later I’m on my way to work.

While walking to the train station I realised that I haven’t got a mask on me.

I know that it has been a long time since we cannot go out without a mask but I do have times when I forgot to wear them.

I panicked and fumble in my pockets then breath out of relieve when I seem to grab a mask.

Well, my relief turned into horror when I remembered.

The mask was all crumbled up and crusty when I opened it and I had to make the choice of walking home to take a mask and risk being late for work or just wearing it till my office before I changed to a new mask.

I grabbed the mask and slowly put it on but not fully so It only covered my mouth and with my finger I held the upper part of the mask so it wouldn’t touch my nose.

I stayed like this for almost an hour before I reached my office and changed into a new one.”

However, the lyrics of the song holds the subtle meaning that he will end up cheating on her.

His date liked the song but caught on to the subtle meaning of cheating and asked him what he meant by it.

“So I’ve been seeing this girl for like a week and a half. I have always been a fan of music that has a nice melody and would prefer how the music sounds instead of the lyrics of the song.

Anyway, I am a big fan of the band Cigarettes After Sex and I found a song by them called Cry.

I know I should have thought it was a heart wrenching song because of the title but I didn’t thought of it at the moment.

Anyways, in the way that I process the music, I thought that the song sounded really romantic, and I wanted to see if she will like it too so innocently, I took a screenshot of the song and sent it to her and said “what do you think of this song?”

She texts back basically saying that it’s nice but really, really sad and was wondering what I meant by that. I was like huh? I listened to the song again and yeah it’s basically about a guy who feels like he’s going to make the love interest “cry” because he can’t be emotionally invested in the relationship like she is going to be the one for him.

I told her I had no idea and explained that I really don’t even process the lyrics in a song and luckily she is fine with it but what in the world I really feel very stupid.”

A woman was allegedly harassed by a man, who offered her $2 to put on a bikini, somewhere in Toa Payoh Lorong 4.

According to Must Share News, the woman, Amelia, was walking in the street with her boyfriend as well as a male friend in Toa Payoh Lorong 4 at about 2pm.

The man then approached her and allegedly waved a $2 note at her, telling her to “wear bikini, I have money”.

The man who appeared to be either in his 30s or 40s, was also seen with his face mask below his chin.

Amelia then ignored the man and walked away from him, to which he then followed and walked beside her for a while and refused to give up, saying “got money, I give you lah!”

The man then shouted “Majulah Singapura” before uttering a Hokkien vulgarity.

Amelia added that she “wasn’t even wearing anything particularly skimpy” and was wearing a simple shirt and pants.

She also said that she will be reporting the incident to the police.

Potential penalties

Under the Protection from Harassment Act (POHA), a person who insults another person with the intention to cause harassment, alarm or distress is guilty of an offence.

Persons found guilty face a fine of up to $5,000 and/or a jail term of up to 6 months; for repeat offenders, the maximum penalties will be doubled.

A netizen has taken to social media to share that his friend’s stationary parked Range Rover has become a victim of a hit and run in a open air carpark at Jurong West Street 92.

The netizen also shares that his friend has made a Police report about the alleged hit and run whom he was informed by a kind passerby who happened to witness the incident and left a note on his friend’s car to inform him.

The driver or owner of a vehicle bearing the license plate number of YM4117G was alleged to be the one who hit the netizen’s Range Rover and ran away trying to escape compensating the netizen or own up for their actions.

Hello to the Driver/Owner of YM 4117G, a Police report was made against you for hit and run my parked/stationery car in the HDB open space carpark at Jurong West St 92.

Definition of Hit and Run

According to motorist.sg, under the Road Traffic Act (RTA) section 84:

If there is an accident, the driver of the vehicle who have caused the accident is required to stop the vehicle immediately.

If someone was hit and the driver fled the scene, it constitutes a hit and run.

This also applies to stationary, parked cars.

If the driver fled the scene in this scenario, it is also considered a hit and run.

Penalties

The penalties for a hit and run incident under the Singapore legal system are a fine of up to S$3,000 or a jail term of up to 12 months for offenders who flout the rules for the first time.

Further matters pertaining to insurance claims will also be more complicated.

A guy shared a story of how he had tried a certain brand of perfume one day and thought that it smelled good after spraying it on his wrists and taking a sniff of it.

After taking a sniff, he then thought that it was a good idea to spray it on his ‘2IC’ instead of spraying it on his body which it was intended for.

Here is the story

“I always like to smell nice and so I have been buying different brands of perfume and trying them on on different days and occasions.

Ever since I started working, I have amassed more and more of them and have never even used some of them before

One day, I decided to try out something new from the usual that I always use and therefore I picked up a bottle of perfume from my personal collection of them and I sprayed it on my wrist to see how it smelled.

After I sprayed and took a sniff of it, I thought it smelled nice and for some reason I thought it would be a good idea to make my ‘2IC’ smell nicer by pulling back the layer on it and sprayed my perfume all over it.

It was only after 30 seconds later that I started to feel a burning sensation and I immediately felt a gush of pain and sensation throughout my body.

It felt that my soul was going to leave my body anytime.

I ended up standing a long while inside the toilet and to rinse my 2IC in the shower and thereafter, I read the back of the bottle which informed me it was 70% alcohol.

My 2IC was still a little sensitive 5 hours later and that was when I realised that what I just did was a really really bad idea.”

A video emerged online showing a group of visitors stranded behind a closed gate on Coney Island at night.

Coney Island has since reminded the public not to explore the island after 7pm because it is unsafe after dark.

In the viral video, a group of at least 10 people were seen at the gate, trapped on the island after the gates were locked with them still inside.

NParks’ group director for parks east, Mr Chia Seng Jiang, spoke to CNA and said that they were aware of the incident of the stranded people who couldn’t get out of the park.

He said that the gates were closed at 7pm and that the opening hours were stated on the entry gates and shelters, as well as on the website of NParks, noting that the gates will be closed at 7pm.

Chia said that the park’s security then arrived to the gate within the hour to open the gates for the stranded visitors to leave.

Not safe at night

Chia said that it isn’t safe for the visitors to explore Coney Island after 7pm, citing the darkness and lack of lights on the island.

He said that the park is not artificially lighted and public access is closed from 7pm to 7am for the wildlife there to thrive in.

He said that because of the lack of light, explorers could become lost or put themselves at risk, making the environment unsafe for them.

He added that “NParks would like to remind all park visitors to respect the opening hours of our parks and for their safety, to adhere to advisories on site.”

The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) announced today (25 Jan) that Singapore is currently in the process of working with Governments of some ASEAN countries on plans to start cruises which will dock at some of the ports in these countries once again.

Ports not yet known

While the talks are still in progress, Ms Jeannie Lim, assistant chief executive of STB’s policy and planning group said that Singapore is in a good position as Singapore is the first to deliver cruise safe sailing standards which had work very well in our favour over the past year.

The talks with other governments also seeks to standardise the safety protocols which both the countries will abide by.

She added that the trips might occur sometime near the end of 2022 though it is not known yet which are the ports that the cruises can sail to.

Cruises to ‘nowhere’ success

Since STB launched the cruise to ‘nowhere’ trips, the industry has also bounced back due to the success of this initiative.

There were 300 such trips last year with about 400,000 passengers and there were no clusters formed on the two ships operating on this routes as of the time of writing.

Bookings have began

Royal Caribbean International who is one of the two firms given the green light to operate these cruises mentioned last year that bookings for trips from Singapore to Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam are opened.

Passengers will ride on the ‘Spectrum of the Seas’, one of its ships.

The proposed trips are set to sail from 21 Oct 2022 with itineraries between three to nine nights, but is still subjected to talks and approvals between the governments.

Ms Lim also added that Singaporean demands for cruise trips have already reach a high before the pandemic and it is very popular amongst the Singaporean population even during the pandemic.
