ACTOR SHANE POW JAILED 5 WEEKS, FINED $6K FOR DRINK DRIVING

Shane Pow, the former Mediacorp actor, was sentenced to 5 weeks in jail and slapped with a $6,000 fine for his 2nd drink driving offence.

He was also banned 5 years from driving.

Pow was found with at least 49 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of his breath, far exceeding the 35 microgrammes legal limit.

He was driving along Java Road towards Nicoll Highway at about 11.30pm on 17 September 2020.

Pow’s lawyer, S S Dhillon, argued that Pow’s offence was a “victimless crime”, and that Pow was “completely shell-shocked”:

“He is so dislocated and petrified that the accused will never dare to be anything less than a law-abiding citizen henceforth. This fear has sent shivers down his spine, which in itself is a grave punishment for the accused.”

He added:

“In fact, he had only drunk to appease his friend as it was his birthday.”

The Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Goh Yong Ngee responded by calling that defence “at best neutral”:

“The fact that this is a victimless crime, as stated by the defence, is at best neutral. The offence of drink driving is established once the accused’s breath alcohol exceeds the prescribed limit. In such cases, a stiff deterrent sentence is called for in the interests of general and specific deterrence.”

WOMAN SUED HUSBAND’S SISTER FOR $4.1M FOR CALLING HER “MANY SEXUAL PARTNERS”

According to a court hearing, a widow sued her husband’s sister for defamation during awake and at a car dealership demanded SGD$4.1 million in compensation but she only receives SGD$40,000.

48-year-old Lim Siew Ling sued 57-year-old Neo Choon Sian after Neo called Lima “rotten woman” and said that Lim had misappropriated funds from the company. At a wake, Neo also described Lim as β€œwas an immoral woman who has many sexual partners”.

Lim’s lawyer breakdown the SGD4.1 million by saying that SGD$100,000 for general damages, SGD$100,000 for aggravated damages and $3.9 million in punitive damages

Punitive damagesΒ are legal recompense that a defendant found guilty of committing an offence and is ordered to pay on top ofΒ compensatory damages.

The case was used to compare with the high profile defamation suit between Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Leong Sze Hian which only accumulated a total of SGD$133,000 in damages. The judge said that the higher damages, in that case, was due to their high standing in Singapore and devotion to public service.

Therefore the $4.1m in damages does not quantify.

According to a media release, Dream Cruise’s World Dream ship had to return to Singapore after a Covid-19 case was found onboard.

The itinerary of the cruise was 4 days 3 nights to nowhere and the ship left Singapore on Sunday( July 11) and returned to Singapore earlier today(July 14) at about 6.30 AM earlier by 2.5 hours.

The ship was forced to return after one of the passengers was found to be in close contact with a recent case and later the passenger was tested positive onboard.

Even though the passenger was tested negative before the departure it does not mean the passenger is covid free.

While the person was undergoing testing all passengers had to remain in their cabins and all entertainment facilities on board had to be close. Imagine after paying for a cruise and only to be told to stay in the cabins until the test results were out.

Passengers who were told to stay in doors was delivered with food that is less than satisfactory for the price they are paying for.
