Have you ever got into a situation where a vendor from the coffee shop refusing 5 cent coins?
Although 5-cent coins are considered legal tender many vendors still refuse to accept the coins. The main reason why many shops refuse to 5-cent coins is possibly it is hard to count, receiving or paying with the 5-cent denomination is considered a hassle.
In 2019, a bill was set in motion, buyers paying can use a maximum of 20 pieces of each denomination for each type of coins(5-cents, 10-cents, 20-cents, 50-cents, 1-dollar)
20 Coins X S$0.05 = S$1.00
Meaning you can still pay S$1 worth of 5 cent coins.
However, vendors can legally refuse any 5-cent coins if…
According to Monetary Authority of Singapore(MAS), As long as the vendor puts up a signboard that states that the shop does not accept 5-cent coins, the vendor has every right to reject the 5-cent coins as payment.
If the vendor did not put up such a signboard, the vendor must accept the 5-cent coins
Some customers make a big fuss when they are refused and tried to report the vendor to the media, as long as the vendor has the signboard they still win.

“Took this video last night on a bus service near West side dormitory. These two banglas boarded the bus reeking of alcohol and the bald Bangla underpaid his bus fare in coins because his ezlink not enough value. “
“The bus captain informed him the fare is $1.70 for cash, he insisted on paying only $1.20 because he claims that’s what he’s been paying using his card. He then started accusing the driver of cheating and having a bad heart. The driver was understandably offended, and they started arguing with the driver telling the bangla to get off the bus and threatening to call the police for his disorderly behaviour. “
“In the end, the driver allowed him to board out of goodwill so as not to hold everyone up”.
“Bus drivers deserve respect for the hard work they put in every day to ensure our efficient public transport is working. I’ve had many bad experiences with banglas drinking, littering, and peeing everywhere especially in West side. While I’m grateful they built Singapore, many of them exhibit undesirable behaviour and create their own stereotypes.”
On Saturday, i misplaced my wallet on a Grab at Johor Bahru Malaysia around 9pm, only realised this when i was making payment for dinner. Made a report on the Grab app while heading back to Singapore.
Shortly after arriving in Singapore, i received a call from the Grab driver to inform me that he will check his car and update me via Whatsapp.
To my delight, Mr Sateesh found my wallet! As it was past midnight, we agreed to meet the coming evening.
Thank you Mr Sateesh for driving down from MELAKA (really long drive) to JB Sentral Caltex just to return my wallet.
Everything was in tact (few hundred $ plus my cards). Had to write this long post to express my gratitute to MR. SATEESH KARUPPUSAMY – keeps me believing in humanity
