Malaysia abandoned the mandate of mask-wearing for indoor settings with immediate effect on 7 September 2022.
According to CNA, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said that mask-wearing to be optional indoors in Malaysia with immediate effect as Malaysia can consider going into an endemic phase completely if the new variants do not cause severe Covid-19 in the upcoming months.
However, masks still remain mandatory in public transport and healthcare facilities, including nursing homes, clinics and hospitals.
Business owners are given the option to decide whether to impose mask wearing on their premises.
High-risk individuals such as pregnant women, the elderly, and those with low immunity or with chronic diseases are highly encouraged to keep their masks on when indoors.
On 1 May 2022, Malaysia abandoned mask-wearing outdoors, as of 7 September 2022 the vaccination rate in Malaysia who had taken 2nd dose is 84.2%.
