A Singaporean man has been apprehended by Thai authorities after allegedly making a bomb threat against an AirAsia flight, prompting a significant security response at Don Mueang International Airport.
The incident unfolded on November 21, 2024, when the suspect, identified as Ho Wai Chong, made a call to the airport’s Public Relations Office around 2:47 PM. Speaking Thai with a noticeable Chinese accent, he claimed that there was a bomb on AirAsia flight FD 3114, which was preparing to depart for Hat Yai in southern Thailand. The flight was carrying 162 passengers and six crew members at the time of the threat.
In response to the alarming call, airport officials immediately halted the flight and instructed the aircraft to return for a thorough inspection. Security personnel conducted extensive searches of the passengers, their belongings, and checked luggage, but fortunately, no suspicious items were discovered.
Following the incident, authorities traced the call to Ho, who was located in the passenger terminal of the airport. He was arrested later that evening around 7 PM. During questioning, Ho admitted to making the prank call, attributing his actions to stress stemming from personal family issues.
In addition to the bomb threat, authorities discovered that Ho had overstayed his visa in Thailand, which could result in further legal complications. He now faces potential imprisonment of up to 15 years for the bomb threat and will be permanently banned from entering Thailand upon completion of his sentence.
This incident highlights the serious consequences of making false threats, particularly in the context of aviation security, where such actions can lead to widespread panic and disruption. Thai authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining safety and security at their airports and will take firm action against those who engage in such reckless behavior.
As the situation develops, it serves as a reminder to travelers about the importance of responsible conduct while abroad.
