The head coach of the Young Lions team that got humiliated, battered and embarrassed at the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia, Philippe Aw, has been given time off following his “intense duties”, said the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) on Thursday (18 May).
FAS added that when he returns from his time off, they will be conducting a technical review of the team’s languid and hapless performance at the SEA Games, which even saw the president of the FAS challenging a fan to come out “face to face” in the aftermath of Singapore’s infamous 7-0 loss to Malaysia.
The assistant coaches of the Young Lions, Md Fadzuhasny Juraimi and Koichiro Lizuka, will take over Aw’s coaching duties while he is away, as well as being at the helm for the Young Lions’ match against Tampines Rovers on 20 May.
This comes in the wake of the Young Lions being sent home from the SEA Games with their tails between their legs, finishing at the absolute bottom of the Group B table with 0 wins that culminated in the record-breaking and history-making 7-0 loss to Malaysia, which was the biggest defeat in more than 20 years.
The team only managed to score two goals in the SEA Games, with one of the goals being an own goal from the opponent; while simultaneously doing Fedex and Amazon proud by shipping in 13 goals in their own net.
